Björk – Who Is It? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me, the meaning of this song is pretty simple. Who is it that gave you your crown, your freedom? To me its the creator, our freedom is something were born with. But some people are handing it over, meaning they're giving that up. Their giving away something god given in the name of fear or power. |
Leonard Cohen – Love Calls You By Your Name Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song strikes me as very buddhist, the whole idea of being aware of the present moment and being beyond duality of opposites and illusion. The poetry puts love as this in between point from things that remains forever undefined, but also very real. A fine piece of writing. |
Leonard Cohen – Joan of Arc Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I always thought of the fire as god, or karma in some way...Like fire was her destiny, it ruined her but was also her redemption in some wierd way. |
Leonard Cohen – Anthem Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The line "a crack in everything" seems to come from a book by Jack Kornfield on buddhism. The story is that a young man who had lost his leg came to a buddhist monastary thing, and he was extremely angry at life, and always drew these pictures of cracked vases and damaged thing, because he felt damaged. Over time, he found inner peace, and changed his outllook, but still drew broken vases. His master asked him one day: "Why do you still draw a crack in the vases you draw, are you not whole?" And he replied "yes, and so are the vases. The crack is how the light gets in" |
Leonard Cohen – Dress Rehearsal Rag Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A Rag is an improvised piece of music. This song is ambiguous as to whether the dress rehersal rag is the main characters suicide, or his life itself. He leaves that up to the listener to figure out. |
Leonard Cohen – Closing Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is about closing time at a bar, and the end of the world: The whole damn place goes crazy twice And it's once for the devil and once for Christ But the Boss don't like these dizzy heights We're busted in the blinding lights, Busted in the blinding lights Of Closing Time There is a reference to revelations, where everybody goes crazy for the anti-christ, then the second coming occurs and everybody goes crazy for Christ. At the same time its just about a bar. Cohen has a wonderful ability to capture the divine in the mundane...Sisters of mercy was about three ladies who picked him up hitchhiking in a snow storm and let them stay in their hotel room, according to an interview. |

Radiohead – I Am a Wicked Child Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Send baby jesus Let him radiate his light Radiate his light The idea of Jesus the as a lightbringer is interesting, as the latin word for lightbringer is "Lucifer" This also means morning star, and "Lucifer" in the bible is never used to describe satan, it was a name that was given him later: Rev 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star. I was contemplating and tripping out on this stuff when this album came out, which was an extra cool coincidence. |

Radiohead – Where I End and You Begin. (The Sky Is Falling In.) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this song is religious, and its about two separate concepts of God. The first one, where there is a gap in between, represents the fundamentalist religious approach. I hear "I'm sorry for us the dinosaurs roamed the earth" and I think of it as evolution (dinosaurs) going against the theory of creationism...This concept of God isolates us from God because he's "up in the clouds and can't come down". But the song then turns to a bigger idea of God, which encompasses everything, from which we came and will return, and this fact is unavoidable. Thus the line: "I will eat you alive" refers to us returning to our source, God. |

Radiohead – Go to Sleep. (Little Man Being Erased.) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"I think nicolenicolenicole has it spot on. I've always taken this song to be a particularly English standpoint on Bush and America, " Yeah, don't forget the line: Something for the Rag and Bone Man, which is a reference to Skull and Bone, the secret society of which Bush is a member. Rag and Bone is also a reference to masturbation. |
Radiohead – A Wolf at the Door (It Girl. Rag Doll) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is one of my favorite songs on the album. This song, like most of the songs on the album, is about totalitarianism and heirarchy, and the relationships that come from that. walking like giant cranes is another reference to being above everybody (see track 6, 2 for more) X-ray eyes stripping you naked refer to machines now in airports: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/08/heathrow_scanner_pilot/ "are you on the list?" refers to terrorist watch lists at airports. The chorus, taken from fairy tales, sets the general feeling of fear and intimidation that defines the totalitarian state...Fear of talking, etc. |
