Jedi Mind Tricks – Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story Lyrics 10 years ago
The first verse is great, and then the second verse is one of the best of all-time. Amazing!

I play this song to people who think hip hop is a limited art form / lacking in depth.

The Luniz – Girl Lyrics 10 years ago
The Crooked I verse in this song is one of the best I've ever heard.

Obviously, he's doing a double-meaning verse about a "girl" who has affected his life. At the end, you find out that the "girl" he's talking about is really the ghetto.

Great verse, great song!

I like this song a lot. It has a nice little sarcasm about the music industry, yet brings the same level of pop-song joy as the songs that it mocks. It's pretty brilliant for what it is, and it's catchy!

The Script – Breakeven Lyrics 10 years ago
I am on the fence about whether I think this song is about not believing in God. Obviously, he has a line right off the bat about it, along with comments about popular religious topics.
("everything happens for a reason," along with the problem of evil / suffering)

I think he might be discussing his relationship with God when he talks about the "woman" in the song. I'm not positive, but it really does seem to fit.

Either way, great song!

Jason Mraz – The Remedy (I Won't Worry) Lyrics 10 years ago
I believe this song is about atheism / cynicism.

breakdown:

You were born on the fourth of July
(Christmas Day... a little Mraz humor for you)

Who says that you deserve this and what kind of God would serve this?
(Christianity / Christ's forgiveness)

Shine the light on all of your friends.... when it all amounts to nothing in the end
(converting people is pointless because there is no God)

The comedy is that it's serious
(he finds it funny that people take crazy religious ideas seriously)

uncovering ways to plan the next big attack
(Muslims / terrorism)

I think in that context, the song makes a lot of sense. I think "I'm Yours" is a very similar song, in that it is a life-affirming, philosophical song about being happy / living a good life as a non-believer.

Feel free to spam / insult, but I think I am right on this one.

Jason Mraz – I'm Yours Lyrics 10 years ago
I am pretty sure this song falls into the same category as "The Remedy," in being a philosophical, life-affirming sort of "love song," with the main theme being anti-religious. I see cleverly-disguised references to God and hell, with the message being to enjoy your life, find true love, and not worry yourself with the fake, oppressive nature of God / religion.

It's a fantastic song about being happy as an atheist. Sorry if that ruins it for you. :-)

Smoothcriminal, you had the best response post by far! I loved it.

Angus, I don't know. Maybe we should discuss the secular nature of "From Genesis to Revelation." You would have to be a complete moron like myself to think that an album with that title wants us to contemplate any hidden religious lyricism.

ps. I am a retard to who eats my own farts. For that reason alone, everything I explained is now refuted. Thank you, internet!

Genesis – Throwing It All Away Lyrics 10 years ago
Their first album is called From Genesis to Revelation. Why would I be such an idiot for seeing a religious double-meaning in the songs?

If I make a case for a double-meaning, and people tell me the first, most obvious meaning as evidence that I am wrong, I think that makes them the idiot for not understanding what a double-meaning is in the first place.

Btw, if you are someone who is LEAVING religion, you go from believing God is real to not believing God is real. That explains a lot of what you just said in the second paragraph and certainly explains the supposedly flawed concept.

Thanks for insulting me. I was moved by the brilliance of you calling me a retard and a moron. I believe that choice of words says a lot about me and nothing about you. :-)

To the second poster, I didn't particularly care one way or the other about religion when I began to see the album for what I believe it is.... a brilliant double-meaning album about losing his faith. I just read the lyrics and thought about them. It seems obvious to me in hindsight.

I would be much more convinced if someone would respond to "Anything She Does" and tell me how those lyrics add up to a non-religious, single-meaning song.

Genesis – Throwing It All Away Lyrics 10 years ago
double meaning = two meanings

The obvious meaning that anyone can get is the one about a relationship ending. I provided plenty of explanation for the other meaning.

I know it's shocking, but art can express multiple ideas at once and be fully intended that way. Good luck with life.

Genesis – In Too Deep Lyrics 10 years ago
It baffles me that people don't see how this entire album has a double-meaning about leaving religion. The "woman" in all the songs is God, and the lyrics are constantly discussing the reasons why he can't be a believer.

It's a double-meaning. That means TWO! :-)

Genesis – Land Of Confusion Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't care about the video. I think he is smart enough to not openly push the religious theme, especially with this particular video. The whole album is full of double-meanings, so it doesn't prove anything to me to mention the more obvious meaning.

I didn't get any responses for "Anything She Does," which I think is the clearest giveaway of what the album is really all about (though it still fits the exact theme of the whole album). That song does not have any other sensible interpretation to me besides the religious one.

Who still looks the same in 20 years or more? Who hangs in people's halls and lives in secret draws? It's all there, you just have to figure it out.

Genesis – Invisible Touch Lyrics 10 years ago
This is an atheist album. It gets clearer and clearer the further you go into it.

I recently stumbled over the B-sides of the singles, and even they are along the same conceptual lines. "I'd Rather Be You" compares himself to someone in heaven. "Feeding the Fire" is about people supposedly going to hell. "Tonight Tonight" is about not getting any benefit from church / putting money in the offering plate. Domino / Land Of Confusion are about God creating a horrible world and not fixing it. In Too Deep and Throwing it All Away are both talking about how he feels losing his belief (while making it sound like he's talking about a woman, an ongoing conceptual theme of the whole album), and Anything She Does, the clearest example of them all, very clearly criticizes God / religion throughout the song. I posted specifics on the other songs to further make my case.

At least read up on the lyrics one more time before you tell me how wrong I am. It all makes perfect sense!

btw, he also did songs like "Jesus, He Knows Me" and "No Son of Mine" that are sarcastic critiques of Christianity.

In American Psycho, Bateman refers to the album as "an epic meditation on intangibility." I laughed when I heard that line.

The evidence is in the entire album. This is an atheist album. It gets clearer the further you go into it. I commented on every song already to support my point. I recently stumbled the B-sides of the singles, and even they are along the same conceptual lines. "I'd Rather Be You" is about religious people who he can't be like. "Feeding the Fire" is about people supposedly going to hell. "Tonight Tonight" is about not getting any benefit from church / putting money in the offering plate. Domino / Land Of Confusion are about God creating a horrible world and not fixing it. In Too Deep and Throwing it All Away are both talking about losing his belief, and Anything She Does, the clearest example of them all, craps all over God / religion throughout the song. It uses the same female reference that Invisible Touch does to talk about God.

Genesis – I'd Rather Be You Lyrics 10 years ago
I think the lyric "I've never wanted to be closer" has a double-meaning.... the figure of speech represents longing, but the literal meaning is that he does not want to be closer to this person. I think he uses this same sort of double-speak throughout "Jesus, He Knows Me" to make his critical points about religion while sounding like he's promoting it. It's pretty brilliant stuff. The entire Invisible Touch album seems to have a negative religious connotation similar to this one. Hearing the B-Sides has only confirmed my theory.

Syd Barrett – Dominoes Lyrics 15 years ago
Either that or the lark reference could be from the 1909 poem "The Lark Ascending" which is a Christian poem about spirituality. I know Syd liked the early 1900's poets (James Joyce, for example.... see "Golden Hair").

Syd Barrett – Dominoes Lyrics 15 years ago
My take on this:

"don't you want to see her proof?" = why believe in a God that won't reveal herself?
"life that comes of no harm" = I'm a good person just biding my time

"Fireworks and heat" = hell
"Hold a shell, a stick, or play" = hide in a shell out of fear, beat the people who believe in hell in the head with a big stick, or just have fun while you still have a chance... before your eternal punishment

the next lines = well, he's made his choice!

I wonder if the lark reference is a reference to Shakespeare's sonnet 29. Syd liked to write songs about writing songs, and that is what sonnet 29 is.... a triple-entendre about religion, being a writer for a living, and writing sonnets as a primary source of joy. The "lark" from the sonnet "sings hymns outside heaven's gates" or something like that.

The whole fun of Syd's music is even if you think I'm wrong, you won't sound like any less of a jackass with your explanation. :)

David Gilmour – On an Island Lyrics 15 years ago
I really think there is a spiritual undertone to this song, like a double-entendre:

White steps in the moonlight
They walked here too
(they meaning ancestors spirits were with them... like a spiritual thing)

Ebb and flow
Let it go
Feel her warmth beside you
(also seems like it could be spiritual... her meaning God in addition to the ladyfriend)

Candles burned
Though the church was deserted
(I think of this as a metaphor like we are still faithful, even though we are not church members. Like they still feel close to God.)

At dawn we went down through empty streets to the harbor
(I think of this as a figurative lyric meaning "we haven't had sex in a long time but we did last night" lol)

Dreamers may leave, but they're here ever after
(very, very spiritual. Anybody who has ever lived out this kind of intimate love is bonded to us spiritually kinda thing. A heaven-like reference in the lyric)

Let the night surround you
We're halfway to the stars
(spiritually in a heaven-like place)

Ebb and flow
Let it go
Feel her warmth beside you.
(her meaning the wife, but her meaning God? Seems like a double-entendre)

Live – T.B.D. Lyrics 15 years ago
Outside of the suicide meaning, I like to think of this song as a way of saying that music is a source of happiness, so he doesn't need to go out (like to a bar). Most people who skip out on bar night are readers who like to sit at home reading books, but he doesn't need a book.... he has his music!

Just a thought. I don't know if it's right or total crap, but it inspires me regardless.

Live – The Dam At Otter Creek Lyrics 15 years ago
It's probably not the real meaning, but I always like to think that this song is about how the true artists need to be original, and stop trying to be like the artists they love. As if in order for the art to live on, people need to make original songs, and if all they do is appreciate bands like Live, then the music will die in time.

Be here now, artists!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I like the Take That version better. It's about Christianity.

And when you rise in the morning sun
I feel you touch my hand in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I wanna feel you in my arms again
And you come to me on the summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love then you softly leave

(Elusive God.)

I believe in you
You know you're the door to my very soul
You are the light in my deepest darkest hour
And you are my saviour when I fall

(Jesus.)

'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

Take That – Back For Good Lyrics 15 years ago
His girlfriend left him, so turns to God / Christ. I think I heard him quietly say at the end of the song "Whenever I'm wrong, God, tell me." (I could be wrong, but listen then correct me if you hear the part.)

Unaware but underlined I figured out the story
It wasn't good
(crucifixion)
But in the corner of my mind I celebrated glory
But that was not to be
(resurrection of the king / it not mattering to a non-repentant person)

In the twist of separation you excelled in being free
Can't you find a little room inside for me
(room inside heaven)

And we'll be together, this time it's forever
We'll be fighting and forever we will be
So complete in our love
We will never be uncovered again
(faith in an unforgetful God / heaven)

Listen to the part before the fade at the end where he says that little extra part. Isn't it "Whenever I'm wrong, God, tell me"???????

Genesis – Jesus He Knows Me Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is a double-meaning. From one point of view, it's an uplifting song about faith in Christ. In another sense, it's a smart-arse way of making fun of Christianity. Every line seems to fit both versions too. Freaking brilliant!

You see the face on the TV screen
coming at you every Sunday
see that face on the billboard
that man is me
(Jesus is everywhere, but he's also turned into a lame icon of culture.)

On the cover of the magazine
there's no question why I'm smiling
you buy a piece of paradise
you buy a piece of me
(sarcastic comment about his position as infinite king of the universe lol)

I'll get you everything you wanted
I'll get you everything you need
don't need to believe in hereafter
just believe in me

Cos Jesus he knows me
and he knows I'm right
I've been talking to Jesus all my life
oh yes he knows me
and he knows I'm right
and he's been telling me
everything is alright
(It's funny to say he knows you, because there are so many people in the world. Plus, Jesus doesn't talk to you. You can't really have a relationship with someone you can't communicate with, and that works both ways.)

I believe in the family
with my ever loving wife beside me
but she don't know about my girlfriend
or the man I met last night
(another Jesus relationship joke)

Do you believe in God
cos that's what I'm selling
and if you wanna get to heaven
I'll see you right
(how could anybody know how to get someone to heaven? Obvious sarcasm.)

You won't even have to leave your house
or get outta your chair
you don't even have to touch that dial
cos I'm everywhere
(also seems kind of silly. I am basically explaining the sarcastic humor behind it, not my opinion.)

Won't find me practicing what I'm preaching
won't find me making no sacrifice
but I can get you a pocketful of miracles
if you promise to be good, try to be nice
God will take good care of you
just do as I say, don't do as I do
(That is REALLY sarcastic!)

I'm counting my blessings,
I've found true happiness
cos I'm getting richer, day by day
(meaning money makes him happy... sarcasm)

you can find me in the phone book,
just call my toll free number
you can do it anyway you want
just do it right away
(making fun of the nature of prayer)

There'll be no doubt in your mind
you'll believe everything I'm saying
if you wanna get closer to him
get on your knees and start praying
(same... dissing prayer)

This is a song making fun of Christianity by saying affirming things that are actually part of the faith, yet when you think of it a certain way they sound ridiculous. If you want more of Phil Collins doing this, listen to / read my posts about the Invisible Touch album. I like to call it beautiful blasphemy. The whole album is hardcore dissing God / religion.

Have a good day! :)

Genesis – Throwing It All Away Lyrics 15 years ago
Anything She Does, In Too Deep, and this song are the most clear indicators of the fact that this entire album is about giving up on God. Once you see that, you can read the other songs' lyrics and see why it all has that theme.

Need I say that emotion's,
Something we don't share
(God is "greater" than emotions... this would be more of a deist God I suppose)

I don't want to be sitting here
Trying to deceive you
(can't lie to God)
Cos you know I know baby
That I don't wanna go.
(to heaven?)

We cannot live together
We cannot live apart
That's the situation
I've known it from the start
(basically he can't believe in the bogus crap he hears at church)

Every time that I look at you
I can see the future
Cos you know I know babe
That I don't wanna go
(no Christian heaven for Phil, thank you much)

Throwing it all away
Is there nothing that I can say
To make you change your mind
(can't tell if it's God talking to Phil or vice versa. Either God is pleading or Phil is saying he wants God to stop being evil like the rest of the album says...)

I watch the world go round and round
And see mine turning upside down
(It messes up his life to try to believe in something that doesn't help him / isn't true. That being said, he still wishes he COULD believe.)

Now who will light up the darkness
Who will hold your hand
Who will find you the answers
When you don't understand
Why should I have to be the one
Who has to convince you
Cos you know I know baby
That I don't wanna go.
(This is the tricky part. I think here he turns around everything and has God basically responding to him in the lyrics. God "doesn't want to go" meaning he doesn't want to blow his cover just so he could convince Phil. Phil should be convinced already without God having to come down and prove himself.)

Someday you'll be sorry
Someday when you're free
Memories will remind you
That our love was meant to be
Late at night when you call my name
The only sound you'll hear
Is the sound of your voice calling
Calling after me.
(Sorry, you blew it. I can't tell if this is Phil talking to the church or God talking to Phil. Either way the point is the same. We have Phil and religion agreeing to disagree.)

Well thanks for reading. If you didn't get the earlier posts I posted, you really should go one by one through the Invisible Touch album until you understand what this album is about. It is one of the best albums ever made, and it changed my life. It made me really think deeply about religion, though I still don't have much of a conclusion (just like the album doesn't) lol.

Genesis – Domino Lyrics 15 years ago
About God.

Then I reach across to touch her,
But I know that she's not there.
Rain keeps running down the window pane.
Time is running out for me.
(He has trouble with life, but can't get help from God.)

Do you know what you have done?
Do you know what you've begun?
Do you see we shall never be together again?
All of my life.
(Don't you see how evil this world is, and why that makes me not believe in you?)

Lonely people, empty rooms,
Pointless violence, silent tombs.
Could it be that we shall be together again?
(If he dies, will he go back to the God that made this evil world?)

This song is basically blaming God for how the world is evil and so many people needlessly die all the time. He is asking God if he even understands all of this and he says "there's nothing you can do" to God.

The last one is my favorite, so go on to that one. Then you will finally get the theme of this album and not have to say "Steve you're wrong. You're nuts!"

If you haven't got the theme up to this point, go back and read my posts for the other songs. :)

Genesis – Anything She Does Lyrics 15 years ago
A song about the nature of God.

You decorate the garage walls,
Hang in people's halls,
Live in secret drawers,
(where Christian people keep crosses)

If you could look around you,
Wonder what you'd see.
(God doesn't care basically)

Fiction.
That's all you really are I know,
Editorial dreams.
They can't make you real,
(God's not there.)

Oh you know,
You've figured in some fantasies.
You would not believe,
What you've had to do,
Life goes on around you and all because of you.
(God created this evil world and doesn't seem to be doing anything about. "In some fantasies" he might have thought not to do it, since he'd know what the results would be.)

You know,
That in twenty years or more,
You'll still look the same
As you do today.
You'll still be a young girl,
When I'm old and grey.
(God is supposedly immortal and we are mortal)

I won't ever, no I'll never get to know her,
Or be the cause of anything she does.
I won't ever, no I'll never get to hold her.
Do you think this aching could be love?
(He thinks God is obviously bullcrap, but for some reason it feels good to try to believe anyway.)

Is it getting clear yet? God God God. That's it. The whole album! Go to the next song now! :)

Finally we get to the meat of this meal. In Too Deep is one of the songs that made me actually want to be an atheist.

I love you God, but if you aren't going to respond to me, then I am going to give up on you. That's what this song is saying.

All that time I was searching, nowhere to run to, it started me thinking,
Wondering what I could make of my life, and who'd be waiting,
Asking all kinds of questions, to myself, but never finding the answers,
Crying at the top of my voice, and no one listening,
All this time, I still remember everything you said
(the message of churches)
There's so much you promised, how could I ever forget.
(In other words, the church was wrong)

OBVIOUSLY about God!!!!!!!!!

Go to the next track. It's great / will help you see the theme of this album.

I got some money in my pocket, about ready to burn
I don't remember where I got it, I gotta get it to you
(tithing)
So please answer the phone, cos I keep calling, but you're never home
(prayer)

I don't feel like I properly explained what I got out of this song. Syd was a genius, pure and simple. People who didn't understand him were quick to judge just because he was on a lot of drugs and wrote barely if at all accessible lyrics. If you dissect his songs enough, they will start to make sense.

This song reminds me of a They Might Be Giants song... it is full of brilliant sarcastic humor towards all the people who don't understand him... the people who were ousting him for all the wrong reasons.

For starters, the line

"I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
that I'm not here"

is a great joke.... Even if he wasn't "there," it would never be "clear" to him lol

the blue line and red line go together wtih the color theme. When he says threw away my old shoes, I think he is refering to that saying "to be in my shoes"

He's saying he can't be where he is anymore... ya know?

I think someone said before that dressed in red represents being a sacrifice, which fits the theme of what's going on.

"I'm wondering who could be writing this song" is another great joke line.

the rest of it is saying he doesn't care if he's rich or successful, and he doesn't care if people like his music. Fame itself is just a dream really, but it's a joke to him. That last line is so f#cking amazing! :)

Question: What's going on in Jordan? That's the middle east, right? That's somewhere near where christianity started, and somewhere near the religious warfare that's been happenning for so long.

Also, I cant hear the Hitler thing, but it would fit the idea of revolting into a new tyranny, sort of like the book, from what I've been reading (I never read the book though). I think this song is a double-entendre (it can have two meanings), sort of like Matilda Mother (although the only meaning I really got out of that one is the one I wrote... coincidentally about Hitler lol). You get the idea. The lambs sound like they could be saying "heil" but I'm still not sure.

I like their acoustic songs......

He spent seven years trying to follow Jesus and failing.
he's sorry he's not sure he believes.
this song is getting all this stuff off his chest, and that's the last time he'll think about it.... the story ends

He'll find a way through life wihtout jesus
I think the "mistake" was his crucifying

selling machines.... machines are like institutions of culture

The ending..............

Don't treat me I'm to blame
Don't treat me like i ever accused you

It sounds like "don't treat me like I'm to blame," but he knows he is to blame, so he just says "I'm to blame"

Don't treat him like he ever accused Jesus of... something.... lol I am not going to use any more imagination here... I am not positive this is the right interp, but what's up with "the holy ghost had left alone" it's gotta be a religious song :)

When she dumps him, she will "Do it so"

k figured it out.... the color of infinity inside an empty glass.

Let's say your life is an experimental film. What color would everythign in the world look like?

I'm squinting my eyes and turning off and on and on and off the light.

he's trying to adjust his lighting to capture everything that happens in the universe... all the light in the universe would be somewhat bright, so he has to squint his eyes lol. TMBG likes to make jokes about how it's annoying to try to get through the lyrics when really it's so much fun, so they make the joke that they're "turning off" meaning turning people off, and going "on and on" lol
