An Angle – Self Medicate Lyrics 18 years ago
And the cover looks like the cover for Fevers and Mirrors.

I agree that he tries to cop Conor in the worst way. He even tries to pose like Conor in pics. It's damn near impossible to be original these days, but you can at least try. Conor's lyrics are very unique in both tone and style, and it's obvious he's trying to imitate him to such a degree that it's only a step away from plagiarism. He even cops the drug and booze refernces.

Damien Rice – Cannonball Lyrics 19 years ago
This is probably my favorite among Damien's songs (so far). It's simply beautiful.

That's entirely possible Jeff is a well-read guy.

This has been one of my favorite songs ever. Seriously, I've loved it since I was like ten or eleven.

I was a vegetarian before I heard this song, but I played it for my meat-eating friends to gross them out.

Wilco – She's A Jar Lyrics 19 years ago
I can see this song in several ways. People seem to have missed "She begs me not to miss her." I don't think that "She begs me not to hit her "is about the narrator. The last line sounds like she's been abused by someone other than the narrator. She's wary of the relationship because she doesn't trust men.

I actually see a lot of heroin references in this song. A "hit" is the injection of the drug. "The tracks of a train's arm" sounds like it's talking about needle marks. "She begs me not to miss her" and "She begs me not to hit her" are her feelings about kicking heroin. "And freeze to spread skeleton wings/I passed through before I knew you" sounds like it's about the slimness that comes with heroin. He's been through it before himself.

The hit/ miss thing could be ambivalence. She doesn't really want the relationship, but she doesn't want it to end either. In that case, I take miss to mean the feeling you get after someone leaves, and "hit" would be an ironic definition meaning the opposite of miss. She doesn't want him to stay around, but she doesn't want him to leave.

She bottles up fer feelings like a jar, and she'll break like one. She's pretty outside and a war inside.

Wilco – Via Chicago Lyrics 19 years ago
I think Jeff is one of the best lyricists around today. Even if you take "And it felt alright to me" literally, it's in a DREAM. I do all sorts of stuff in dreams that would be out of the question in life. I murdered a clown in a dream once. It felt alright then, but when I woke up, I had all sorts of remorse. I think he's talking about killing the relationship.

Nick Drake – Mayfair Lyrics 19 years ago
Hearing this song kind of makes me feel strange, but I like it very much. The little laugh he lets out really humanizes him. We're led to believe that he didn't do much laughing. It only makes him seem more complex and tragic.

Nick Drake – Time Has Told Me Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that this is beautiful. Nick was a poet, and this song is about as close to perfect as a poem can get.

Pas/cal – The Bronze Beached Boys Lyrics 19 years ago
I like this song even though it was in a car commercial. Actually, I stull like "Pink Moon" too, but ordinarily that makes me hate songs.

I wonder who the heroin user is. Could it be Elliot Smith? Conor played at his benefit concert, and they were acquainted.

The Good Life – Inmates Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. I love her voice, and I agree that this song is great. Honestly, I've only recently gotten into the Good Life. I never thought Tim could sing. Not that I mind the Cursive screaming )I love Cursive), but I think he's a good singer.

I love how this song puns on time. "The movement of a hand waving goodbye" is about time to me.

The last quote also express disdain like the hatred someone suicidal has for himself.

Bright Eyes – Drunk Kid Catholic Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, I think it's about "crutches" that we lean on in order to cope. Drinking and religion are two of those. I don't get "They crawl from the oceans/To paint in the caves." I suppose it's one group baptises themselves with water, the other with alcohol ("the oceans"). Both groups have to pretend to be normal at least part of the time. They have to crawl out of the misery and live an ordinary life. The caves could be churches and school or another large, but enclosed space. Churches usually have paintings and statues. I'm thinking of graffiti or art class in the later. My boyfriend thinks it's about evolution since life began in water and people used to be cave dwellers, but I think my theory is better.

Bright Eyes – A Spindle, a Darkness, a Fever, and a Necklace Lyrics 19 years ago
I think he uses that story because he's thinking of suicide. In the book, the dinosaur, Mitchell, moves and misses his friend, Margot. That's akin to thinking of dying, but turning back because you realize how much you love the people in your life. In the bit of the song when the story reprises, it says "'same old face, same old tail, same old scale, same old walk, same old talk." The scale fits in with the symbolism and puns on it.

Not READING that, I messed up. I meant "helping the kid."

Bright Eyes – A Spindle, a Darkness, a Fever, and a Necklace Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's not Conor reading that. I think it's a little boy, not a girl. I even had the odd thought when Fevers and Mirrors was new to me that it was Conor reading it when he was little. Yeah, it does sound like Joe from Son, Ambulance, but I hope it's Conor and his dad. That would be sweet for some reason.

Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with intoodeep. It could be either/ or or both. About Conor, I know he's known to have a cocaine addiction, and that could explain his slimness, and he could have an eating disorder since he mentions not eating in his songs, but his depression could also be a factor. I've been clinically depressed for most of my life, and food is often the last thing on my mind, you know. I've never been anorexic , bulimic, or done coke, but I've been 83 lbs. It's likely multicausal.

I agree, incubus421. This song, to me, is about self-destructive tendencies (flirting with death). This is one of my favorite songs ever. I love the surreality of the lyrics.
