Jethro Tull – Aqualung Lyrics 1 year ago
I have always thought that this song was about the preconceived notions and judgements that people place on one another. Some people see the old man as a bum/pedophile and some see him as a good man down on his luck. Truth is that we don't know his story. From his view, he does not know who feels what about him. He does not know who to trust.

John Prine – Taking A Walk Lyrics 1 year ago
I think the man at the door was someone telling him (the character) that a loved one had been killed in the war. The lady in the white house is America. I think the verse starting " found a card in my pocket " is referring to a time that he told the girl that her loved one , his friend had been killed in the war. The card was probably a thank you card from her.

We are lost in space and we really don't know why we are here. But It is a beautiful inspiring world, the sun is shining and you only have a limited time to be a part of it. It is your time... so enjoy.

Tom Waits – Who Are You Lyrics 2 years ago
"they're lining up to mad-dog your Tilt-a-Whirl:"......A tilt-a whirl is a carnival ride. He is basically calling her a fun ride, anyone can ride. They are lining up to mad dog her (hump her like a rabid dog).

Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics 3 years ago
I think many of you read more into some lyrics than is actually there. For the record, I'm 58 and college educated. This is my interpretation of the lyrics (not the video).

"In my eyes, indisposed
In disguises no one knows"
His (the narrator) eyes are gone, vacant, blank. He hides his true self, He pretends to be what he needs to be. No one knows his true self.

"Hides the face, lies the snake
In the sun, in my disgrace"
He hides his real self, pretends to be a "snake in the sun". He is ashamed of himself.

"Boiling heat, summer stench
Neath the black the sky looks dead"
This is his perspective. heat = pain, stench = nasty, smelly surroundings, dead sky = lifeless surroundings.

"Call my name through the cream
And I'll hear you scream again"
You can try to help me, but you will have to try again because I not listening and don't want to be helped.

"Stuttering, cold and damp
Steal the warm wind, tired friend"
Seems to be saying while he is /was in this dark, depressed state of mind a "friend" took his only warmth/hope.

"Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes"
There are no honest men. Neither is there honesty among snakes (dishonest people).

"In my shoes, a walking sleep"
Just going through the motions of life.

"And my youth, I pray to keep
Heaven sent hell away
No one sings like you anymore"
When he was young he believed god/heaven would keep him from this hell he is living, but he doesn't believe that anymore.

"Hang my head, drown my fear
'Til you all just disappear"
Depressed, drinking, drugs, etc. and wants to be left alone

"Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain"
His plea for all of this depression to go away. Asking the sun to shine into the black hole that he is living in.

Listen to the traffic in the background. He is reminiscing about older dead cars at the side of the road. The current car he was driving has just broke down and died.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Something's Always Wrong Lyrics 3 years ago
I had a live-in girlfriend for a few years. We liked this song and listened to it a lot. I always felt a little funny listening to it because I felt like it it described her/our relationship perfectly. I had a hard time understanding why she liked it so much. Then I realized that maybe she thought of it in reverse in that I was the one that always had Issues (something wrong). But no. That was a relationship bound to die.

@[ckdamascus:35639] Yea, I don't think it has anything to do with 3 people. He is in a relationship with no communication and she(?) can't be happy. Been there, I understand exactly what he is saying.

John Prine – Mexican Home Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is so descriptive it's like being are on the porch with him. The heat, the headlights and the weather all add to the feeling. I think that his father dying on the porch is just a memory and not the reason for this particular visit. I think he's glad to be back with his mother even though it hot inside and he is having memories of his father. Not really a sad song.

Greatest FU song ever.

"They're lining up
To mad dog your tilta-whirl
Three shots for a dollar"
You are easy and cheap.

"Take them back to your red house"
You are a whore.

"Time's not your friend"
Your ugly.

"And just who are you this time?"
Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder)

"Are you still jumping out of windows in expensive clothes?"
Rich and stupid

"You look rather tired"
You have been rode hard

I could go on. Great song.

Eagles – The Last Resort Lyrics 10 years ago
This is a great song. The meaning is simple and direct. This is our earth, this is what we have. We have to protect it. If you live life as if there is another place you will be when you die, you can't fully appreciate what you have. You will neglect this world and/or see it as disposable. Definitely anti-religion.

Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about depression. He has lost the one he loves. Basically he wants to do nothing. He doesn't want to talk to anyone or see any one. He just wants someone to clean his house, fix his meals and go away. Nothing sexist about this.

Drive-By Truckers – Bob Lyrics 13 years ago
I understand that " light in the loafers" is a euphemism for being gay. The song says that Bob "AINT" light in the loafers. Which means he is not gay. It may also mean he is overweight. Yes and he says it twice and you still think Bob is gay?

Drive-By Truckers – Bob Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the one point of the song is that Bob is not gay. Is it so hard for some of you to believe that an unmarried man is not gay. There are people like Bob, just living life, minding their own business, good to their mother, going to church,(he does go to church),drinking beer, fishing, dogs. Maybe "aint light in the loafers" does refer to his weight. The song is a salute to people like Bob. The Bobs I know are not gay.

John Prine – Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Any More Lyrics 15 years ago
Of course this song was about Vietnam, but its probably more relevant today than it was then. Conservatives have convinced themselves that god is on their side when it comes to war. So anyone opposed to the war is also opposed to god. But as Prine points out "Jesus don't like killin'no matter what the reason's for". Being patriotic doesn't automatically get you into heaven.

Pink Floyd – Mother Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't think its so much about an over protective mother as it is about a mother who is teaching her son that life is all bad and that he should fear life. She puts all her fears into him. So he builds a wall to protect him from the evil world on the other side(with her help). His fear of life and his lonelyness leads him to insanity. The last line "mother, did it need to be so high", he comes to the realization that his mother has made his this way.

Cake – Sheep Go To Heaven Lyrics 16 years ago
It is about religion. Sheep are those that follow the crowd without question (religion). Goats are those that live for today (non-religious). He just wants to play the pan pipes and drink wine. He would be a goat. This line kind of sums it all up.

"As soon as you're born, you start dying,
So you might as well have a good time,"

He obviously does notbelieve in life after death.

John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics 16 years ago
It's not about communism. It's about utopia. it's fiction. It's just an idea to think about and consider. I think he knew it wasn't possible but we can learn from the idea.

"Imagine there's no countries" you cant have communism with out countries.

It basically says imagine a world without religion, without government and without possessions. (3 verses)

And its not a religious song. If any thing it's anti-religious. Imagine people living for today, not for tomorrow/heaven. For christians to adopt this song as their own is really lame.

submissions
Uncle Tupelo – Atomic Power Lyrics 16 years ago
ok NE, I didn't know who wrote it and maybe its just a religious "song" and not a "hymn". I understand when it was written and what it is written about. The part that I (and others, I am sure) personally find ridiculous are the parts about "rising to meet your maker", etc. We here about the "last days" all the time, but it never seems to happen when they say it will. Sorry if that offends anyone.

Tom Waits – Come on Up to the House Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds to me like some kind of religious hymnal or a preacher preaching. Hes saying if your life's bad, you need to come to the house. The "house of the lord"?

"The world is not my home
I'm just a passin thru"
Heaven is home.

You could take it that hes being sarcastic and saying that the church is preying on the down and troubled for their own gain (money)
