Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 15 years ago
Unrequited love. Pretty obvious.
He's infatuated, but he's alone in his love...

This song sounds like a happy love song, but listen to the last few lyrics... it takes a turn to the dark:

"It's hard to be man when there's a gun in your hand
Oh I feel so...

And it's my four leaf clover
I'm on the line, one open mind
This is my four leaf clover."

"on the line, one open mind," he's calling a suicide helpline... gun in his hand... he's desperate.

the woman is not a prostitute. he's cheating on his wife/whatever with a mistress of some sort. he's got a woman on the side, and he's trying to hide it. he doesn't quite feel guilty about the affair, either, he just wants to make sure he doesn't get caught.

Silverchair – Straight Lines Lyrics 17 years ago
For what it's worth...
I grew up in Washington state during the 90's. Grunge was a religion back then... I was way into Pearl Jam, STP, Alice in Chains, etc. etc.
Then Silverchair came, and me and all my buddies thought they sucked... then bands like Matchbox 20 started cropping up... and it was all over.
Then we graduated from high school, went to college, blah blah, years have gone by and i've grown up a lot... i'm not the same punk I was 11 years ago when I saw Dave Matthews band BEFORE 'Crash' was released...
Then today...
I saw the video for 'Straight Lines'... at first I thought "Oh God, these guys are STILL AROUND? Jesus..." but man, this song fucking RULES! I downloaded it off iTunes and I absolutely love it. I guess me and Silverchair both have matured.... this song blew me away. Not sure about the album, but this song for sure is one of the best things i've heard all year.
OK, I am going to listen to 'Mad Season' and import my Alice in Chains box set into iTunes.... later!!

The Cure – Doing the Unstuck Lyrics 18 years ago
Sex is in the song, there's no doubt:

"It's a perfect day for kiss and swell
For rip-zipping button-popping kiss and well..."

Come on, do I have to spell this one out to you guys?

But ultimately, it's about passion. Passion for life. Unstoppable lust and a heedless desire to escape the 'dreary world' you're in!
The "violence" you speak of, maddsurgeon, I think is just that feeling you get, deep in your heart, when you're about to do something great and you're busting out of the seams...

No, I think "the rest" is STILL about heroin. How drugs can dilute you and cloud your mind... denial. When you're on drugs, you THINK you're OK, and you THINK you're on top of the world, and you FEEL like you're kicking ass...
But really...

When you think you're a winner...

Probably Las Vegas.

U2 – Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a woman who is dangerous and amazing at the same time. The protagonist falls in love with her... but eventually things get too wild and the protagonist eventually finds himself in emotional quicksand.

They are an emotionally dangerous person:

"You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left there on the beach
Well you tell me things I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach"

All the while, the protagonist loves this person, her love for him is genuine, but tainted in a way that is hard for the protagonist to deal with. This woman will do anything for love, but she's very damaged:

"Well you stole it 'cause I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cause I wanted revenge
Well you lied to me 'cause I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends"

I mean, it's all pretty self-explanatory. She's a wild woman who doesn't know any stability at all in her life, and when love comes along she tries her best but things ultimately FAIL for our protagonist and he's left wondering how she can possibly fill the void he reluctantly has left behind. He's worried.

My favorite lyric is "who's gonna taste your salt water kisses"...

salt-water = tears

Oasis – Columbia Lyrics 18 years ago
It's actually a play on words. During the height of the Cool Britannia era in the early/mid 90s, there was a swanky cutting-edge club called "Columbia" where a lot of rock stars would hang out and score coke.
It IS about cocaine. The lyrics are pretty specific, and Noel has made no secret about his addictions and their influence on his songwriting (alcohol and cocaine).

For me... it's about trying to help someone who can't be helped. You do your best, you try... but you're as invisble as an angel. Your intentions are good, but it doesn't matter... and afterall, you're just a person ("angel hits the ground")

Embrace (UK) – All You Good Good People Lyrics 19 years ago
I disagree. This song is more Tears for Fears than it is Verve. The Verve meander around a bit more and do not have as concise melodies (and this is coming from a huge fan of the Verve). Eitherway...
No other band could match the grandiose bombasity of this one... I remember the video, it was almost RIDICULOUS in how grandiose it was. It goes like this:
The singer is on death row for, what we are lead to believe, a crime he did not commit. People are holding up candles and signs. The Governor doesn't pardon the execution, and then the singer is executed in the electric chair... BUT!!... as soon as they fry him, a BABY IS BORN!!
It's so cheesy and over-the-top... but it works with the song and how BIG it is.

Embrace (UK) – Ashes Lyrics 19 years ago
I've been an Embrace fan for years... since back in the late 90s. They're KNOWN for their grandiose sing-along gospel like choruses. Anyhow...
When referring to "ashes", I think he means it in the classical sense in regards to the phoenix rising from the ashes:

"Mythology. A bird in Egyptian mythology that lived in the desert for 500 years and then consumed itself by fire, later to rise renewed from its ashes."

This song is about overcoming all the shit that has happened to you. It's about being in control of yourself and letting the past simply be the past. It's about getting past all the bullshit that might drag you down. It's about emerging from a bad experience.

Embrace rocks -- i'm glad they're finally getting some recognition state-side. If you like this song, check out their debut album "The Good Will Out"... it's phenomenal.

Eddie Money – Take Me Home Tonight Lyrics 19 years ago
Remember the oldies song "Be My Baby" by the Ronette's? It was written and produced by Phil Spector. To refresh your memory, the chorus goes:

"So come on and please
(Be my be my baby) Be my little baby
(I want it only say) Say you'll be my darling
(Be my be my baby) Be my baby now
(I want it only say) Ooh, ohh, ohh, oh "

Anyway...

Ronnie Bennett was the lead singer of the Ronettes. And she is the woman singing in this Eddie Money song. When he says "Just like Ronnie sang..." he's referring to the classic Ronette's tune. And then Ronnie Bennet of the Ronette's pipes in and does her bit.
FYI, her name is really Veronica but she changed it when she formed the Ronettes.

Sneaker Pimps – 6 Underground Lyrics 19 years ago
"Take me down, 6 underground
The ground beneath your feet
Laid out low, nothing to go
Nowhere a way to meet"

6 underground means dead, buried... as in the expression "6 feet under."

"Calm me down, bring it round
Too way high up your street
I can see like nothing else
In me you're better than I wanna be "

Getting high, and the protagonist has given up on trying, in comparison to someone else. Good, bad, whatever... the protagonist is a junkie to the extreme and doesn't care.

" Don't think cause I understand, I care
Don't think cause I'm talking, we're friends
Overground, watch this space
I'm open to falling from grace"

When you're with other druggies and dealers (hook-ups, even)... you sit through a lot of bullshit and pretend you're interested. Your common bond is the drug, and everyone will suffer eachother in order to get high. In a normal life, with no drugs, you wouldn't waste a glance on the people you're now sitting in a room with, getting hooked up or getting stoned. If you're a pothead, junkie, whatever and decide to suddenly go clean... see how many "friends" you keep.

"Talk me down, safe and sound
Too strung up to sleep
Wear me out, scream and shout
Swear my time's never cheap"

Coming down. Sexual promiscuity and activity. The drug life delutes a person... where love doesn't matter and sex is just another fix.

"I take whatever you're giving, not enough"

The protagonist really has a problem...

The Cure – Charlotte Sometimes Lyrics 19 years ago
Hetfield, no need to be rude.

Robert often uses literature and film as a BASIS for a song. Would you say that the song "Burn" is about a guy who dies, but comes back to life as a character called "The Crow" to avenge his death? No, certainly not. The movie is just an inspiration for the song. Charlotte Sometimes is the same way.
Yes, this song is inspired by the book Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer. But there's MUCH MORE going on in the lyrics than just a re-hashed synopsis of the book -- which I too have read.

It is one thing to disagree with someone's interpretation, but it's another to name-call. Especially when you haven't even heard the other person's side of the story.

And to answer your question: No, I am not a complete fuckwit. Maybe a half fuckwit, but certainly not a complete one.

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 19 years ago
FightingLee,
You still come off very snooty. Why are you so offended by people offering the boy/girl interpretation?
I never once dismissed your comments and interpretations, so please be far to the others here and don't dismiss ours.
We're not Bible scholars, and even if the song was to the letter about the Bible, a lot of us would still relate it to a relationship situation... because, guess what, IT FITS and makes sense to us on an emotional level.
Do you even concede that thing song can be interpreted as a song about broken hearts?

You come across as a dismissive know-it-all, and although your interpretations are interesting and insightful, you really need to lighten up and let other's think what they want. I'm starting to get the feeling you're some evangelical fundamentalist that looks down on people who don't behave exactly how you believe they should, in your opinion. Some of the beauty of humanity is that we're all very different. The discussion over this song is a good example.

Don't be rude, and don't be dismissive.

I still think this song works more as a doomed love song. And it relates to me on a very deep level. I'm not the only one.

Deal with it.

Bruce Springsteen – Atlantic City Lyrics 19 years ago
Here's what I got from the song...

I think the protagonist is a union man who lost his job on account of a strike. Maybe he used to be a strongarm and a toughguy. Now, in order to get by, he's had to do dishonest work and now he's in the pocket of bad folks. And so he's about to resort to fight/hurt someone to make a few extra bucks.

But all he truly wants to do is escape the hopeless situation and be with someone he lost a long time ago.

No need to be snooty, FightingLee.

Ask the average listener or U2 fan what this song means to them, and I doubt they'll go into a big analyisation regarding Jesus. It's obvious you've given this song a lot of thought, but that does not mean that you are now qualified for internet-snobbery.

I like the song because it relates to a relationship I was in and the lyrics, to me, are not strictly and boldly religious. And I know i'm not the only one, in fact, no matter how correct you think you are (and very may well be, ultimately) -- I think you're in the minority. Most people see this as a sad love song, and the lyrics do back up that interpretation as well.
