Jewel – Absence Of Fear Lyrics 18 years ago
I dunno. Tori Amos says she wants to have sex with Jesus...
maybe people do want to get down and dirty with God.
All those Brides of Christ.
We know what that's really about...perverts...
(BWAHAHA) OK, wow, that was really blasphemous. I mean, if I were a christian.

Tori Amos – Ruby Through the Looking-Glass Lyrics 19 years ago
Beautiful song.
Of course "ruby" is the unborn female child inside a grown woman, having relationship problems with the father. "Through the looking-glass" I am guessing is a metaphor for how different and strange this world must seem to an unborn child.
I do not understand the line about Every boy smoking to cry...
any ideas?

Paula Cole – Nietzsche's Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
She's talking about a controlling and manipulative relationship. I would think the line about taking on water means holding in her emotions and feelings and opinions, as well as shouldering the brunt of the responsibility of the relationship.
She's realizing that she hasnt been herself in the relationship, and that she's been seeing him and thier relationship as something that it's not. hence, letting go of the fantasy. Understanding that what they had was empty, and destructive.

Tori Amos – Northern Lad Lyrics 19 years ago
I think "when you're only wet because of the rain" refers t a different sort of wet. I think that makes the line even sadder.

you know what's interesting? I feel this way about my husband sometimes. I made no mistake in marrying him, but sometimes I catch myself in my own lie. The way I try to be something esle for him, so that he'll be more in love with me. Then I realize- he's not exactly perfect himself, so what am I doing?

I think women do this more than men. I know the more I fake it, the weaker we become.

and that's probably the truest thing I've ever written on this site.

Tori Amos – Toast Lyrics 19 years ago
Tori's brother Michal died a few months before the album was released, and she added this one for him.

I don't think we'll ever understand everything, it's too personal. I almost feel like a peeping Tom listening to it, but it's so lovely, hearing someone's grief like that. It might be my favorite thing about Tori, we get to hear her pain and brokeness without feeling alienated.

Tori Amos – Sleeps With Butterflies Lyrics 19 years ago
Sounds like she's singing from the perspective of a woman who is in love with a man with committment problems- and she's diving in headfirst.
Is there trouble ahead
for you the acrobat?
I won't push you
unless you have a net

I think she's telling him she won't ask him for a stronger commitment- because he isn't comfortable without a safety net- an escape route.

Otherwise, lovely song. I Adore the piano and the harmonies. I love how she says "I believe I'm worth coming home to". Simple statement of self-worth. love it.

Tori Amos – Ribbons Undone Lyrics 19 years ago
It's such a pretty thing. I think it really illustrates Tori's maturity.

Mostly, it makes me miss my mom, and look forward to being a mom myself.

I don't think you'd feel that way if you were ever in love...

Fiona Apple – Fast as You Can Lyrics 19 years ago
Fiona sees in herself what we all do sometimes. You know there are those fights you pick with the people you love...that detatched feeling. You fight and you scream and you say things just to hurt- just because it's time for a fight.

I know about being soft and sweet, and I know about raging. Many women do.

That being said, it's a fantastic song to listen to in the car.

I may rage like a woman, but I drive like a man.

Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics 19 years ago
It's just about America, and the silly charm eveyone has. How funny it is that we spend every day wanting something more, and the more we want and the more we believe in our pursuit of happiness...the more we turn ourselves into people who are only half aware.

The Zombies – Time Of The Season Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about free sex guys. Just, no strings attatched, no lasty names, free sex. It embodies the sixties sexual revolution.

Tori Amos – Mother Lyrics 19 years ago
I can really relate to this one.

I was married young, and recently. Right before the marraige took place, I remember feeling fear and resentment. Being young, and angry, and very independant a part of me felt like I was giving into the patriarch, loosing my struggle against fighting to be strong in my femeninity. I panicked a little, watching my mother, the person that, for the first part of my life at least, I looked at as what a strong woman was supposed to be...and I watched her in her own marraige, and I watched her loose her identity a little...and I really tried to connect with her and extract from her what wisdom I could about being a woman and keeping your identity and independance in a marraige, but all she seemed to want to do was talk about my upcomming marraige and troubleshoot my fears.

It's a good song. And, while I love my husband (and I'm sure tori loves hers) it's easy to feel like your giving up self determination.

Tori Amos – China Lyrics 19 years ago
There's so much longing in this song. It's so bitter-sweet and lovely.

And Tori is right about China and secrets, Just saying the word makes everything feel delicate and mysterious.

you know- I'm not a gigantic celine fan...but I do love this song. It's very passionate.

And for all you kids out there- this is more what good sex is. Don't listen to britney.

Des'ree – You Gotta Be Lyrics 19 years ago
it's true. I remember the first time heard this song. I was 12, and I was riding in my dad's car, and it was summertime. I remember where we were, I remember it was late afternoon, I remember how warm it was, and I remember exactly how I felt. I do love this song, and I love the simplicity of her voice.

Jars of Clay – Frail Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the song is communicating the false arrogance men feel...and then that moment where everything falls apart and you're left alone in the dark to contemplate all the things that you aren't. The strength and courage that you don't have.

Christian or not, you have to give the song credit for the depth of feeling it contains. That's love and sadness right there, thanking Christ for the sacrifice that saved his soul- that makes up for his weakness and his detatchment.

I feel frail too.

U2 – Running To Stand Still Lyrics 19 years ago
It does seem to be about some sort of addiction, but addiction is the product of brokeness from something else.

Ever loved someone who had a very destructive addiction? I have. It's awful to watch someone suffer, and you can;t help but resent them for it as you watch, helpless as they destroy pieces of themselves.

I think (addiction aside) this is certainly a song about watching someone go through hell. They're always fighting backwards, always against themselves. They're always giving up the advantage.

Switchfoot – Let That Be Enough Lyrics 19 years ago
Ironically, I first listened to this song on my 18th birthday.

I was actually moving out to be on my own, and I had a full time office-job, and I was paying all my bills, and paying for my own education- and I wasn't able to celebrate my brithday with anyone. So, I threw on a mixed CD given to me by one of my few remaining friends, and I pulled over and cried- and I realized that I'm not really alone.

There's probably a God, but if there isn't, there are lonely people all over. That makes me feel better...we all feel abandoned and alienated sometimes, and maybe just being alive and heading somewhere is enough. Maybe having faith in something should just be anough.

Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now Lyrics 19 years ago
Joni is trying to say that she's learned there is no correct answer. Love, and Life are to big and meaningful to be summed up by anything. We'll never understand everything there is to know the things that motivate us. You can be and idealist, or you can be a cynic, but you're silly if you think you understand it all.

We're all going to live, and we're all going to love. It's going to feel wonderful, and it's going to hurt. But it's the human condition, afterall.

Plumb – Phobic Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's a prime example of what God's perfect love is supposed to be. Forgiveness (I have learned) is an enormous part of loving someone else. Watching someone be weak and hurtful and selfish, and forgiving them anyway.

I'm not even sure I'm a christian, but I adore this song. It's meant alot in my marriage.

Jewel – Absence Of Fear Lyrics 19 years ago
ok. this is really bugging me...
the lyrics ARE:

inside my skin, there is this place
it twits and turns, it bleed and aches.
Inside my heart, there's an empty room,
It's waiting for lightning, it's waiting for you,

and I am wanting
I am needing you here
inside the absence, of fear.

Muscle and sinew, Velvet and stone,
this vessel is haunted it creaks and moans.
My bones call to you in thier seperate skin
I make myself translucent to let you in for,

I am wanting
I am needing you here inside the absence of fear

there is this hunger- this restlesness inside of me and it knows that you're no stranger
You're my gravity.
My hands will adore you through all darkness aim
they will lay you out in the moonlight
and re-invent your name

for
I am wanting
I am needing you here, I need you near, inside the absence of fear.

TADA!
Now, I know it well. It was me and my husband's wedding song. (pause for the "aww's")
And I disagree with Rachybabyheartyou (pause to smack forehead at thought of the name) Jewel is a self-procclaimed wiccan. She is not a christian, and yes- she is spiritual...but this song was about love. Earthly, human, romantic love...oh that and desire.

She is speaking of the place inside herself where she lets her defenses down and gives in to loving and being loved completely. It's a hard place to get to, for anyone who's been there. It's a song of beautiful verse and phrasing.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – All I Want Lyrics 19 years ago
I immediately thought the song was about finding mutual subission with a lover. "Nothing so loud as hearing when we lie, truth is not kind and you've said neither am I" obviously they're passionate about eachother, but there isn't openess between them "BUT the air outside so soft, saying everything" and then in the next bridge "Confessing everything". A night, when they felt close, they were able to come to terms and find the courage to be open and honest with eachother, and give in to need and feeling.

hey, just my sappy conclusion.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Before You Were Born Lyrics 19 years ago
No comments? Wow.

I really like this song. It captures this defiant, slightly bitter feeling perfectly, without depressing the listener.

I heard somone once tell me it was written from the perspective of a gay man, dealing with the rejection that comes with his alternative lifestyle. It makes alot of sense, and it's an interesting theory.

My impression was that it just speaks to most everyone. Everyone feels at one point or another that they were given a raw deal, dealt bad cards. Everyone wants to curse it all at one point or another. The last line is very uplifting, and the melody and the strong rythm section give it a posotive, motivational feel.

great song to listen to after a bad day.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Pray Your Gods Lyrics 19 years ago
Tha'ts an interesting interpretation WEBB...I never thought of it that way. This is a hard one for me when I really try to anylize every single raw lyric...but my first impression was a mournful star-crossed lovesong . I see the Gods as the distractions and the demons that come with living a life in the corrupt and wounded modern day world, and I see the armies as the "ranks of the freaks who suspect that they can never love anyone".

But the interesting thing is the ultimatum he gives her...which makes me lean toward your explanation. "OR lay upon my altar now your love".

Dave Matthews Band – Digging a Ditch Lyrics 19 years ago
Honestly, I think it's been over-interpreted. It gives me the impression of an odd sort of everyday meditation. How someone feels sorry for themselves when they're alone, and tries to make peace with the world daily. Imagine someone wrapping themselves up for just a little while in thier lonliness and dissapointment, just to find a place to put it.
