Porcupine Tree – Sleep Together Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, it is supposed to be a happy ending. Sleep together is not a metaphor for sex in this song, IMHO. It really is sleep. The corrupted realized their actions and acknowledged their destructive existence and decided to just be in peace and sleep, rest finally, after all of the torment of themselves and others (others being nature which encompasses people). They burned the commercialized nonsense of society and left peaceful with almost no trace. After all, those who turned out to realize what is being content, accepting, and loving (not in the usual sense of the word) seem to leave almost no trace behind, including children (which leads me to interpret another song with a line about dependents much differently especially given that SW doesn't have kids). This is just to spark some different view of the meaning here. :)

The Dillinger Escape Plan – The Perfect Design Lyrics 18 years ago
Great closing song and lyrics for this concept album! It's messy and gives this sense of everything falling apart. All that keeps us alive is ending from destructive behavior.

The Dillinger Escape Plan – We Are The Storm Lyrics 18 years ago
hmm...is this a social song? I mean, think about this and read the lyrics: as humans, we are producing way too much in goods and ourselves. The result is global warming, which will lead to floods later and the death of ourselves. And, even in this (when it happens), we will still be producing regardless of the earth being so upset with us raping her- too much was not enough. This album could be giving a better message than we think! ;) It seems to be about how destructive humans are and the result of it in aspects as insiginificant as our petty relationships all the way to the earth.

Amazing (!!!) song on all levels!

The Cure – The Last Day of Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
Why does every song need to be about a relationship!?!?! :::frustrated::: This song, to me, is about aging and being depressed about life nearing an end. Despite enjoying being "wise" and knowledgable (experiencing so much), things are far more difficult, and with each passing season (even Summer), the days seem to be colder (as most people age, they get cold more easily as well...it works on two levels). All of your dreams were likely not accomplished (or they feel meaningless knowing that nothing we do really lasts), and all you believe will probably be wrong (if it isn't already) as others learn more... This is the feeling of a great Blues song in great Rock form (one of my favorites on the disk with the meaning behind it). He has celebrated aging, and this is a great contrast to that, which fits well on this album!

Sage Francis – Dance Monkey Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow...a rapper who consistently rhymes with a message!?! Devhead, "fake Intellect" (you can never prove if it is in fact fake) is far better than idiocy being loved and exploited. I guess it's better for someone to say something stupid to make others feel better about themselves...

Dredg – Bug Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
This song: WOW! I feel the same about this song as you three. Also, dredg is simply an amazing band. I hope a lot more people take notice of them this time, especially since this album sounds like it will be the most balanced of the three! dredg more than deserves recognition; it's owed to them by the many who didn't/don't care about music as an art!

Nine Inch Nails – Love Is Not Enough Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm getting an interpretation that is quite different here. "The more that we take, the paler we get" strikes me as being about how people take so much from what is around them that it causes them to have less, to the point of not having enough to live. Even more, it is about people siding with a country or group and being so ignorant of others' pain due to the taking ("covering ourselves with lies"). We may look tough in this group bullying others, but in the end, we will acknowledge that we are not so tough.

Maybe it is about people needing to make a change, not just give out this fake "love" in the world; that isn't enough. If this change isn't done, we will end up back at the start, with all that was built going back into nothing but pieces to try and put together again instead of fixing and building upon what was already built...

Opeth – Bleak Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, I'll dare and give a different interpretation. You will all think I'm crazy, but here it goes:
the song is the dialog of a battle between Satan (growling vocals) and God (Steven Wilson's parts and the clean vocals) that seems to occur over-and-over.

Opeth – A Fair Judgement Lyrics 19 years ago
My interpretation is that it's about the battle between Nature and Man.

"Losing sleep, in too deep
Fading sun, what have I done
Came so close to what I need most
Nothing left here"

He is speaking as if being all of Mankind, and after destroying so much of earth, the sun seems like it is fading, and nothing is left, since we destroyed it all in the pursuit of satisfying our greedy desires. Now, we can't rest, for we know the end is too near...

"Cut the ties, uncover disguise
Left behind all intertwined
Lost control, moved out of the role now
Nothing's left here"

This is another part of this story on a more individual level: it's about how individuals (esp. world leaders) cause destruction and then cut him/herself (/themselves) off from it to not take any blame- an average human action. So many have done this, and now there's no going back...

"Leave it be
It was meant for me
Soul sacrifice
Forgot the advice
Lost track of time
In a flurry of smoke
Waiting anxiety
For a fair judgement deserved"

Our souls have been sacrificed, and from everything destroyed (due to us not looking at how quickly the end could come), there is smoke and nothing left, only an inevitable end. We deserve to go with what we destroyed. This is a fair judgement by nature. No god caused it; we did it to ourselves.

Porcupine Tree – The Creator Has A Mastertape Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is so dark and anticipatory (for the lack of a better word). It's like you are awaiting something with quite an impact to occur. After 3:20, the little break occurs and the spacey vocals start and just complete the sound of the song, which is done very well! The instrumentation is quite heavy yet still melodic (to my industrial-metal-art-rock-jazz-fusion-ambient-and-progressive-etc.-loving ears). ;) Also, for some odd reason, I get images of the movie Pi in my head, especially the "drove a spike into his head" part. Porcupine Tree is truly one of the most evolving bands out right now.....ahh, awaiting Deadwing!! ^_^

Porcupine Tree – Trains Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok, here's another interpretation: the song IS talking about trains, but the 60 ton angel falling from the sky sounds much more like a plane crashing into the country side. Perhaps the cousin in the song is one person who died in the plane crash, hence, why the aircraft is called an "angel." The train in his room reminds him of when he used to visit his cousin in the summers (when they had time off), and the rumbling from the train makes him feel (due to the sound of the bed rumbling possibly) like his cousin is there in the room causing the memories to be much more vivid causing him to be "dying of love." "But, it's ok" because he has good memories of them being together in summers that they would spend together.

For instance, the following part:

When I hear the engine pass
I'm kissing you wide
The hissing subsides
I'm in luck

is about how the memories the train brings makes him jovial. But the next part:

When the evening reaches here
You're tying me up
I'm dying of love
It's OK

talks about how the memories are killing him. It's like he's tied up on the train tracks being run over by the train, but it's ok- the memories of the good times are worth the pain. Far fetched interpretation? LOL That's what I get from it at the moment.

Opeth – The Leper Affinity Lyrics 19 years ago
6th sadistic sniper, that interpretation is EXCELLENT (also, close to what I was thinking as well...lol). It sounds more mature and/or meaningful, your description, as well. ;) I have a problem with so many people interpreting almost every one of Opeth's songs as being about someone raping another and killing them. I really hope they are all wrong...LOL. The instrumentation is just too damn good to have such an (I'm sorry to say this perception of mine) immature meaning. :(

Dream Theater – Goodnight Kiss Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm thinking that this song is about post-partum depression. The mother just killed her child while she iss depressed at the same time. She thinks she did a good thing in taking her child away from this cruel world. I think she ends up killing herself in the end as well.

Dream Theater – The Test That Stumped Them All Lyrics 19 years ago
I and leaning towards agreeing with Flux; you are right that it is difficult to really tell. It must be schizophrenia judging by the paranoia present in the song. Also, shock treatments used to (and still are, but rarely) treat schizophrenia. The guy in the song thinks he knows some answer to a question that no one else knows (a "classic" symptom). He also thinks everyone is watching him and that the world revolves around him. I love the instrumentation; it invokes the feeling of paranoia and extreme stress affiliated with it!

Dream Theater – Solitary Shell Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with Bryant the Great. It's not about an autistic person; although, it can seem as such with him not desiring to be held as an infant. However, the description is more towards schizophrenia and/or bipolar disorder (which can have the same "symptoms" in infancy/childhood as autism does psychologically), since he appeared healthy to everyone else (he was a danger to himself). On top of this, he wrote frequently, which implies that he did not have problems with communication/language (autistic people do have a hard time with communicating/language). The instrumentation is amazing in this song (very progressive IMO)! ;) I completely agree with Paradox.

HIM – Join Me In Death Lyrics 19 years ago
I hope you are wrong about Love Metal, iamthemuffalo. Love Metal is the only HIM album that I can actually listen to without getting upset about the teen-angst-love nonsense (IMO) being thrown at me so strongly. Love Metal seems to be much more mature in that they speak about more than love (it's about life and struggling with faith in something, which can be left up to your interpretation). I think it is titled Love Metal due to love being synonymous with knowledge and faith (in other cultures/faiths, etc.). Of course, this is MY interpretation.... :( To everyone who is hating HIM, listen to Love Metal (ignore that the title of the CD seems so much like everything else they've done)!!!

Mind Flow – Meeting Her Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
I still can't grasp exactly what is trying to be stated with this amazing song. As of now, I think the song is a struggle between two people (or maybe just with one's self) about what truth really is: the tangible or the intangible. Should we trust our senses in discovering truth or our minds that can "see" beyond the material world? This is where the title may come from: a person is meeting the eyes of her, the intangible truth.

A Perfect Circle – Passive Lyrics 19 years ago
Once again, don't attack me, I pre-ordered the CD. The instrumentation is just amazing and feels floaty (uplifting?). The chorus is catchy but not annoyingly catchy; it's extremely melodic! The lyrics are great as well (not interpretive but still great!); the obscenities fit in perfectly (I love 'em!) with this song to make the meaning and emotion hit harder. I don't know what else to say about Passive other than it being a must-listen (IMHO). This song is easily one of my favorites on eMOTIVe. Also, it makes me sad........sad that an album with original material from APC won't be out for (quite?) a while! ;)

A Perfect Circle – What's Going On? Lyrics 19 years ago
First off, I already pre-ordered the CD, so don't flame me for being able to listen to this track early. I think this version is well done. However, I get the chills from Marvin Gaye's version every time I hear it whereas with this one, I just like it. It also isn't as musical; I expected more (Maynard, use your voice, man!!). :( On the other hand, I can really understand how APC interpreted this song. They recreated it to be more subtly (inwardly) angry than sad and depressing to be expressed to all; APC's version sounds like it's someone talking to himself whereas Marvin's version was talking to the world. Overall, it isn't bad; it's just not as good as Marvin Gaye's version (IMHO). Everyone should hear Marvin's original at least once, and I am glad APC brought his lyrics out again for the world to hear and notice! =)
BTW, the next song on the album, Passive, is amazing (like most of the album)! I just thought I would mention that. ;)

HIM – The Path Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is so amazing. I can agree with the both of you. What gets me about this song is that I can emotionally relate to it, but I can't pinpoint exactly why. The path may be one away from the fake light of many religions to what you believe is truly the Creator(s) of all. It may seem dark to everyone else, but you know that it comforts you; it's home to you. It could also be about the many choices we have in life; some are dark, but ultimately, they all lead to the light of the present or soon-to-be future. Or it could be about the path of life that you follow, which gets very dark and troublesome at times. Even the most terrible and uncertain "things" in life can turn out to be the light for you while on your path. Life may be dark (unclear/uncertain), but there is a light through that darkness (be it an afterlife or just a cease to all of the pain and bittersweetness of life). Like I said, I can't pinpoint why it is such a strong song, but it can mean so much at different times. The instrumentation is purely amazing here, which is what greatly enhances the lyrics. This is easily one of my favorite songs (or the best?) by this incredible band.

Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics 19 years ago
Another amazing song....the lyrics are not interpretable like the others (at least to me), but they are very well done and true!! The vocals and instruments go together perfectly! It has a feeling of floatiness and being beyond time (like an outsider viewing and talking about a situation); it's hard to describe...LOL.

Porcupine Tree – Prodigal Lyrics 19 years ago
WOW!!! This song describes how so many (I think...LOL) feel at times in their lives. We try so hard to make a decision that we end up not choosing a side, since we see the bad in both (dealing with religion, politics, life, or even more simple issues). It seems so terrible, but we go on for some reason, wishing and almost knowing that this terrible time will pass....once again, amazing instrumentation.

Porcupine Tree – Heartattack in a Lay By Lyrics 19 years ago
Amazing song...I think it's about his car breaking down looking for his phone to call for help, which is symbolic of what he drove away from: a hurt relationship. He sits back thinking after deciding about whether to turn on the radio or not. He still sees hope and thinks that if he can just calm down, he can go back and make things better to cause the relationship to last longer (maybe even a lifetime)....that's what I get from it...The instrumentation is what really gets me with it!!

A Perfect Circle – Imagine Lyrics 19 years ago
THANK YOU Aperfectprogression & sprodigy!!! You stated pretty much what I was about to type. Lennon's was lighter/fluffier and seemed very passive; APC's is emotive, strong and more thought provoking. For more emphasis on what I'm saying, I never even payed attention to the how powerful Lennon's lyrics really were until I listened to APC's version!! APC seems to be screaming "WAKE UP!!" with their version. To those who say it is not musical (some say this)...did you even listen to the composition and instruments or did you instantly not like a different version of Lennon's song (or rather, close your mind)!?!? AMAZING cover...period.
