First, I'm amazed at the arguments. I'm REALLY amazed that Viro has choosen to spend so much time telling all of us how much he/she hates U2, I'm amazed how much PASSION a band that you hate has stirred up in your heart (or maybe your soul). I think maybe you should ask yourself why you care so much? Second... LEARN2KNEEL. I think you may have something. Might be a stretch but I don't put it past them. Exodus 3:14 Third... I know that in my own life, (I was born in 62) I've really enjoyed U2 since the Red Rocks Album but I've never fully understood them till I read the book, "Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2". U2 speaks in broad themes, wide sweeping themes that could easily span an album. Bono at the Hall of Fame Induction said himself that October was "about God". What is significant about that statement is not that he is talking about God but that he said the WHOLE ALBUM was about a theme: God. Not a phrase, not a song but the album. You could even say that the DECADE of the 90's was about "searching". One of the most interesting reviews I've come across was someone who said that (it could have been the band in an interview) that they should have got the kid from the BOY album cover and put him (as a grown up) on the cover of Atomic Bomb. Where BOY was about innocence, Atomic Bomb is about Innocence regained. That would be a career sweeping thematic arch. I've been watching the set lists from their Vertigo shows on the tour and it is facinating to see how they are arranging and re-arranging the songs to tell a long 22 song story. And what are they ending with? On most nights its... All Because of You (I AM - God) Yahweh (Jehovah God) 40 (I waited patiently for the Lord) I REALLY believe that those of you that go thru so much work to tell us that U2 sucks and that this is just a sell out iPod commercial have been blinded by your own choices. I'm glad you are here, but I hope you will choose to HEAR. Read the Walk On book, borrow it from your library if you are too cheap to buy it. It's facinating. LEARN2KNEEL... have you read that book? You would love it! |

I find it hard to believe that people can, in such a short time say this song has no depth. I will admit it has taken me years to fully appreciate Bono's lyrics but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I think this song is about the alure and draw of temptation on ones life. Temptation is a meaningless concept to someone that does believe in God but I clearly think that Bono has been driven in his life to find his place in the world that God created for us. The meaning of this song clicked for me in the bridge, "All this can be yours..." which is a close paraphrase of Matthew 4:9 when Christ is being tempted by satan in the wilderness. All he was asked to do is to bow down and worship satan and everything that they saw would be given to him. But of course... Satan was speaking to the creator so, not much of a deal huh?? Verse 1, "and though your soul it can't be bought your mind can wander" What an image of fighting with what you know to be RIGHT and moral and what you feel will be more fun. Verse 2, beautiful image of the night sky and the heat of a wild club with many things that a 40 something married man may want to partake in but he decides to step back and ask for the check and head out... the girl with the red nail polish and the guilt inducing imagry of a crucifix hanging around her neck. and of course the bridge... as mentioned above. BUT the last verse. when the lights go down the grace and love of God give him something "I can feel" and "your love is teaching me how to KNEEL"... in prayer I think it is an honest struggle to understand the world that we live in as a believer that longs to honor the All Mighty and yet enjoy the world. The VERTIGO is the not the just the fear of heights but the fear of the FALL, the fall from grace and maybe even the fall into sin. Of course that's just my opinion. |
