Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i think this song is about going through with marriage because you feel like you're supposed to. looking up the word tryst made me confirm this hypothesis to myself. |
The Clash – Wrong 'em Boyo Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this makes me think of my own ideology toward theft, which i'm sure isn't what the song is about, but anyway- i always think it is alright to steal and cheat big corporations, but think it is immoral to cheat small businesses, which within the context of this song is equivalent to the trying man. |
The Clash – Clampdown Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the clampdown sounds like government oppression. i think, perhaps, working for the police department or serving in the military for an unjust cause (the vaste majority of them) would be considered working for the clampdown, or oppression. it's the people in society that brown nose the upper class, the uncle tom's, and all the weasels of society that cuddle up to those in power. not trying to trash talk military servicemen, or policemen, but they are working for the betterment of the upper class whether it be their intention or not, which is not to say that they can't have meaningful moments within their career, or gain knowledge from their experiences. this is my interpretation anyway =) |
Dr. Dog – My Friend Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is about death in my opinion. |
Dr. Dog – The Beach Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This makes me think of the approach of death as our lives are dwindling down in our twilight years. it's a scary concept that the young generally avoid thinking about. the beach being swallowed is like death. this whole album seems like a pessimist's perspective on life, and its significance, or lack-there-of. |
Dr. Dog – The Rabbit, the Bat, and the Reindeer Lyrics | 14 years ago |
That's how I interpreted it too. |
Elliott Smith – No More Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i interpret this as him saying his depression is kind of a lie, even though it's not- i do this to myself to where i'll criticize myself for being depressed and feel it's just a thing i do to cast blame, and remain paralyzed so i don't have to function- so i can stay helpless. "arguing his case" is all the negative thinking where he might feel he's trying to convince himself he has a reason to feel so mentally incapacitated, all the while feeling himself a farce. He also, in my interpretation, is saying that his depression is a "useful dream" in that it allows him to be useless- it lowers one's expectations of oneself because you can blame everything on the depression instead of dealing with your situation proactively. it isn't logical thinking, but i partake in it, and i think this is what he means. this thinking is replicated in King's Crossing where he refers to himself as a "method actor". |
Elliott Smith – Cupid's Trick Lyrics | 14 years ago |
According to this interview, Elliott says he wrote this song when he was "in a state", and he says he doesn't remember what the song is about. He also claims to have been embarrassed by the lyrics because he felt they were stupid, and thus they weren't printed on the CD sleeve. He was so embarrassed that when the interviewer further inquired he repeated that it wasn't on the sleeve for a reason. I think it sounds great. Incredibly interesting, and unique. It can be interpreted however, I guess, in light of this. http://cwas.hinah.com/interview/?id=11 |
Elliott Smith – From a Poison Well Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't know about the ghost part, but a writer for an ocean in a shell is great imagery for what he probably perceived himself as- not that I know this is what he intended the line to mean, but that's my guess. |
Elliott Smith – Division Day Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think of division day being the day he would divide himself out of the equation that is life. |
The Helio Sequence – Broken Afternoon Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the voice reminds me of dylan. |
The Helio Sequence – The Captive Mind Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Read the words of the captive mind And you tried to leave the past behind But webs spun slightly, they catch those likely To come back again, come back again this makes me think of how i sometimes have cyclical negative thoughts, and the fact that i repeat them to myself is what makes my mind captive- captive to nothing, but itself and the habits of thought i perpetuate. in other words, you get caught in the web of your thoughts only when you return to them, and dwell on them continually. |
Built to Spill – Oh Yeah Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The sound is just everything I could hope for in a song, and says exactly what I think God would feel about my doubt toward his existence. |
Built to Spill – Good Ol' Boredom Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is how boredom is for me. after being busy boredom seems wonderful and is a welcomed experience, but then when boredom sticks around for too long you find yourself becoming paranoid and anxious and unhappy all together. if there was a lesson to this song i believe it'd be the age old tale of moderation. i'm experiencing the good kind of boredom right now ^_^ |
The Velvet Underground – There She Goes Again Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This isn't necessarily what the song IS about, but I see it as a girl who has been financially tied to a boyfriend, and has become economically independent through prostitution. it frustrates the guy that felt he had jurisdiction over her, and his desire to hit her he feels is driven by his disgust with her decision to be a prostitute, but he really is just upset at the lose of control. |
Elliott Smith – Kiwi Maddog 20/20 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is brilliant. I am on an Elliott Smith binge. It's the longest I've ever stuck to listening to a single artist in a long time. I just can't stop. I love this song so much! Instrumental songs are so underrated, especially when they're of this caliber. Utterly superb! |
Portugal. The Man – Let You Down Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i feel like perhaps it's about knowing that you're selfish and going to let others down, perhaps particularly loved ones. |
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – You Don't Have To Cry Lyrics | 14 years ago |
you're mom is wrong, you're supposed to say 'you and i' anyway. |
The Cure – Lullaby Lyrics | 14 years ago |
ha, i initially thought the song sounded pedophile-ish, but after reading some of your comments i think i've changed my mind to the addiction thing, plus the song is titled lullaby and a drug fix is like a twisted, adult lullaby in that it gives you peace of mind so you can relax, if not only for a short time =) |
Pixies – Dig For Fire Lyrics | 14 years ago |
both the characters depicted sound like they COULD be homeless. the first is kneeling in her hole and the second lives on the beach. people might ask them what their intentions are because they chose to live alone, and people ask if they're looking for the mother load, or the easy way out, and they respond with, no, i just chose to live my life in a different way than you. their digging to find fire, or a meaning to life, or perhaps something bigger than the ordinary, modern lifestyle we are all taught to accept. that's my theory. |
Elliott Smith – New Monkey Lyrics | 14 years ago |
sounds specifically about his addiction to alcohol. too lazy to explain. |
George Harrison – Got My Mind Set On You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it's catchy, but lyrically simple. |
Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics | 14 years ago |
that's how i was interpreting it too, so i'm glad to here someone else saw it this way. |
Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Throwing candy out to the crowd Dragging down the main" - Candy being his often negative, depressing lyrics that he throws out to the main, which is the general audience, the recievers of his messages. I believe Elliott thought he was a bad influence, so this fits with that motif nicely. "The helpless little thing with the dirty mouth Who's always got something to say" - talking about himself, referring to himself as a helpless little nothing with only negative, critical assesments of the world. However, having an artistic, analytical mind, he's always got an opinion, and something to say, but from his perspective, this isn't always a good tihng. "You're sitting at home now Waiting for your brother to call I saw him down at the alley Having had enough of it all Said you can do what you want to whenever you want to You can do what you want to, there's no one to stop you" - whether he's referring to his actual brother, or perhaps just a friend, a symbolic brother, to call, but since Elliott was a bit of a difficult guy, his brother basically says, 'fuck it- you're too difficult. i wanted to help, but you're not getting anywhere." "All spit and spite, you're up all night And down every day" - all spit means he's all talk, which is only fueled by his own spite. He's awake all night and depressed everyday. "A tired man with only hours to go Just waiting to be taken away" - he's just waiting for death, hoping it'll come for him soon. "Getting into the back of a car For candy from some stranger watching the parade with pinpoint eyes Full of smoldering anger" - while his fans get a rise from his lyrics, i assume he gets his rise from whatever this stranger has to offer, maybe just company, maybe sex- it's hard for me to guess here. all the while he's watching the parade, which is a metaphor for life, with his analytical eyes tearing everything a part and making assessments and judgments with a deep seated "smoldering anger" because of what he sees in the world. "You can do what you want to whenever you want to You can do what you want to, there's no one to stop you Now you can do what you want to whenever you want to Do what you want to whenever you want to Do what you want to whenever you want to Though it doesn't mean a thing Big nothing" - repeating the main part of the song, which reveals a theme that i think hints at suicide, but also at how others get tired of his antics, if thats what you want to call it. in the end, elliott is the big nothing, big perhaps because of fame, but nothing, because that's how he viewed himself. this all just guesswork and how i view the song, but thought i'd throw it out there. |
No Doubt – Just A Girl Lyrics | 15 years ago |
just because she is LUCKY enough to be pretty enough to get by on her looks doesn't mean it should not bother her. what about the rest of us average looking girls that don't get by? is there not something critically and innately wrong with that and its implications on our society? it's not self-parody. it never even hints at it. especially since it so explicitly describes the experience of being a girl in our culture (in this world, really). |
No Doubt – Just A Girl Lyrics | 15 years ago |
because women don't have sexual desires? you sound like an idiot. the song never says women don't need men or vice versa so stop putting messages in that your paranoid mind thinks are present. perhaps you should do nice things for people because you are a nice person and not because you want nice rewards. asshole. this song kicks ass, and you have to be a girl to REALLY get it, but i'm sure if a guy is educated and empathetic enough he can understand it- unlike callsign who clearly lacks the basic fundamentals to human intelligence. you embarrass you gender by talking out of your ass. luckily most men aren't as mentally deficient as you. |
Elliott Smith – Alameda Lyrics | 15 years ago |
oh, i guess i already commented on this song...just ignore me then *shrug* |
Elliott Smith – Alameda Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song IS me. only recently did i realize i was blaming everyone else (internally- i'm not a bitch out loud) of being flawed, but now i realize i'm the one who is messed up and since i can't relate to people i feel excluded, naturally, and since i didn't want to admit that i was the boring/stupid person, as opposed to my friends, i accused the world of being deficient and unable to relate to me. i'm trying really hard to be different, but some of my negative thoughts about people and myself persist and it makes it really hard to relax and have fun. and i DO feel like i have broken heart, but like the songs says- it's my own fault because i don't let anyone get close to me. i just realized how much i relate to this song- so i felt i had to rant about it. i love elliott smith- he makes me feel like there are other people out there like me. |
The Cure – Subway Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the meaning is pretty upfront, but goddamn that scream. it scares me to death because i always forget it's there. i'm listening to the song right now and i'm scared cuz it's about to happen...the music is dying down- oh shit.....skfasldjfasklhgslakdgjhsdk.....it just happened. |
Elliott Smith – Alameda Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song reminds me of myself because i think people see me as condescending (though i'm trying to stop), and i don't know how to get close to people, especially guys, and if they seem interested in me- i lose interest because i feel like if they like me there standards must be pretty low. it's pathetic. |
Muse – Butterflies and Hurricanes Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Don't let yourself down don't let yourself go I feel like this line is important in that it's stating through out the changes that arise you have to try to remember to maintain who you are as an individual and don't let the change turn you into something you're not. but, yeah, I agree with mike- especially since the song is called Butterflies and Hurricanes which makes me think of the Butterfly effect, which is basically the concept you've described =) |
3 Doors Down – Loser Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i used to listen to this song a lot in the seventh grade when it came out. i was like the second least popular girl in the school, and i was teased by this popular guy that i used to like. he would make fun of me in front of my friends, saying stuff about my appearance and things like that. i'm twenty years old now and i still feel like the same person i was in junior high, and this song still makes me feel the same way. however, that guy got into a car accident and has brain damage- so i can't even project my anger at anyone |
The Ataris – Your Boyfriend Sucks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
^^don't be a bitter ho i like this song though because it does happen. |
Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song kind of describes where i am at right now in my life- maybe not intentionally though. the sunshine in a bag thing being pot fits because i smoke all the time, and i am NOT happy, but very glad when i'm high. it makes total sense to me. i like Del's rhymes about reality being in your head and that this is something you have to remember- it's all your perception! nothing is true. this song is very nihilistic to me, and in a good way. |
Arcade Fire – No Cars Go Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Since the album is criticizing society, I think that this song is telling you that the place where you can escape our materialistic society is in those few moments you contemplate to yourself in your room in the dark before going to sleep. |
Cream – Dreaming Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Why hasn't anyone commented on this? (I know everyone says that who is the first comment, but it's true in this case). I love this song. |
Dave Matthews Band – The Last Stop Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Never mind, I think it's about how the Middle Eastern people feel about Americans. I read it again. It makes me agree with them even though I'm an American. I mean, who do we think we are? |
Dave Matthews Band – The Last Stop Lyrics | 15 years ago |
When I hear this song I think it's from the perspective of the first Jews that disagreed with the concept that Chris was the Messiah. While Jesus was preaching that he was 'the chosen one', there were many Jews that felt strongly that he was not. For Christians today, to understand their anger, just think of what you think about Mormonism. You likely think it is an abomination, sac-religious. I think this also because of the way the music sounds. It sounds Middle Eastern, like the tone is representing the setting as Dave tells a story about an angry Jew who feels strongly that Christ is perverting his religion. I'm high right now too. Slap me five! |
The Clash – Spanish Bombs Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I just looked up the version by Tijuana No and it was good. Thanks whoever it was that suggested it. I second that recommendation to anyone who wants to look it up. I feel I'll always remember the word 'corazon' because of this song. The Clash is so educational, amirite? |
The Clash – Rudie Can't Fail Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think the message is that since this guy never tries to succeed- he just drinks beer in the morning and has fun he can't fail because he hasn't set any expectations. The business man has to worry about failure because he has chosen to live a life that is dictated by the concept of achieving success. However, the singer admits that he is "feckless", which now I know what that means thanks to this site. I'm not saying I'm right- that's just my guess. |
Dave Matthews – Oh Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The best on the record? I don't think so. Still, it's nice. |
Led Zeppelin – The Rover Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think this song is written from the perspective of a satellite looking down on the world seeing things like london and the seven wonders, and perhaps it's "lover", or another satellite is on the other side of the world and if this inanimate satellite could talk it'd ask "If they could just join hands"- or if only people would stop arguing and simply get along because our time on earth is fleeting. |
Jenny Lewis – Sing a Song for Them Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I like this song because I feel like it's a message to other musicians that consider themselves artists and it's Jenny's advice to them. |
Jenny Lewis – Trying My Best to Love You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song reminds me of John Lennon's "Oh My Love". Their descriptions of their ideal love focus on simplicity lyrically and musically. I think Lennon's song was better, but I still think it's cool how brilliant artists can come to similar conclusions on abstract subjects like love. |
Nada Surf – Hi-Speed Soul Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song definitely has a "new order" tone, but I think the singer isn't calling for it, just saying the way things are seems a little off from what it should be, however, he sounds somewhat ambivalent and decides he's just going to make the best of it. |
Radiohead – Just Lyrics | 16 years ago |
By the way if that makes no sense it's because I'm incredibly stoned. |
Radiohead – Just Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this is about how some people allow themselves to be consumed in self-pity and think it makes them unique and deep. "can't get the stink off, he's been hanging around for days. comes like a comet, suckered you but not your friends." 'He' is symbolizing this type of self pity which is trying to get to you, and your suckered into, but you're friends don't fall for it. "one day he'll get to you, teach you how to be a holy cow." Talking about when you succumb to the easy temptation of giving into self-pity and quiting. Once you've accepted this perspective on life it'll teach you how to be a 'Holy Cow' or the best of the worst. "don't get my sympathy hanging out the 15th floor. you've changed the locks 3 times, he still comes reeling through the door. and soon he'll get to you, teach you how to get to purest hell." The singer doesn't sympathize when the person is "hanging out the 15th door" or crying wolf and being a pathetic and is predicting that 'he' will get you (i.e. self pity) "you do it to yourself you do and that's what really hurts is you do it to yourself just you, you and no-one else you do it to yourself." Once you've lived a good portion of your life thinking like this the cognitive habits make it a real problem, and when it starts to seriously effect you you have no one to blame, but yourself, because you did it to yourself. |
Relient K – Who I Am Hates Who I've Been Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song basically about being selfish at one point and thinking only of yourself and your problems. It's about someone who sulked around pittying themselves and realized how selfish it was and all the people that he forgot in the mixed up strain for absolute patheticness. He's apologizing for moping around and not being sensitive to anyone else. He doesn't ever want to be that way again. The lyrics start whining and than it'll say that whole ' stop right there, that's exactly where I lost it. See that line, well I never should have crossed it." It's him reflecting on being a selfish person and than saying 'stop right there' what was I thinking? I was so selfish. So he apologizes for being so selfish. |
Mazzy Star – Fade Into You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
To me- This song is about a girl who is intrigued by a guy who she sees as dark and mysterious. The whole time she's longing to be with him and wanting to help and save him from his darkness, all the while he's stuck on himself, too focused and self absorbed in his own petty problems and manifestatios that he can't seem to notice her trying to 'fade into' him and become apart of him. She finds it strange he never knew how much she longed for him when it was so obvious, however he only saw his pain which blinded him to her and everyone around him. When she's given up hope he realizes he's come to her realizing what she's been trying to do all along. Suddenly she has what she's been yerning for the entire song and 'smiles cover [her] heart'. Once she is content and knows she's finally gotten what she has desired so badly, the words repeat 'i think it's strange you never knew' over and over. This might be a hint of realization on her part of coming to face with the fact that he's very selfish and not at all dark and mysterious/deep as she thought he was-only self-centered and whiny little brat. Repeating strange you never knew' she realizes he doesn't care at all for her, just for her excess attention to him and his "sorrows". She realizes he doesn't love her, and she doesn't love him. Maybe she's stuck though, now that he needs her? Or not. I'm flexible on that last part. :) The End |
Weezer – This Is Such A Pity Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song always makes me think of a couple where the guy has a 'kick back' personality, and seems to joke more than be serious. While the girl is more on task and serious. these too get into a relationship, and while their too different personalities compliment each other (i.e. the calm person relaxes the uptight one, and the controlling one sets a principle for work ethic) they often cause serious problems in conflicting views and perspective. I know how to pick on you You push me over the edge We cause so much agony We can't seem to move ahead he says he knows how to pick on her, so he teases her and she can't take his joking criticisms, and she's so serious she gets him rialed (sp?) up and angry with her. he says that their relationship is such a pitty because they could use their personalites and characteristics to 'give all their love to each other' all the while they are making their redeeming qualities irritate each other and get under each others skin. It's such a pitty because it COULD be so wonderful if both weren't so stubbornly set in their ways. |
