Brian Setzer – Radiation Ranch Lyrics 1 month ago
Freudian slip?

"that many of us (maybe even you or your family) were a benefactor of."

yes, the middle class certainly were benefactors to Reagan's policies of expanding the fortunes of the 1%. I couldn't have said it any better.

Brian Setzer – Radiation Ranch Lyrics 2 months ago
All the time Reagan was president he was talking trash to the American people about trickle down economics meanwhile all the artists were writing lyrics like this

Drivin' through Jersey, headed for D.C.;
Look at all the boarded up factories.
All the kings men have a summerhouse in France,
But you and me live on the radiation ranch.

Reagan was setting the stage for an oligarchy and that what we have now with the top 25 richest men in America have more wealth than the entire U.S. treasury. We should have been listening...

"you piss upon my candle, so proving you're a fake"

I always think of this line whenever I present an idea to someone and instead of being constructive with their criticism they tear it down.

The Tragically Hip – It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken Lyrics 1 year ago
@[oxejin:46801] all these years later I wonder if he means that we have to "settle" to have a "good" life. The testament to a great song is that I still can't figure out the meaning. Maybe that's the point.

@[_biggreenmonkey_:46800] I tried to like this 16 years later but it turned to zero. So I guess I already did 16 years ago, so it's just been you and me all this time. Crazy we are the only ones, but that's the world huh

Fiona Apple – Every Single Night Lyrics 1 year ago
@[giuliadm:45780] "My hearts made of parts of all thats around me" is one of the most powerful and instructive lyrics I've ever heard. I interpret it to mean that she doesn't give her full heart to any one thing because once that thing goes away the devil can move in. It's better to give your heart to many things so if one goes away there are others to fill the void.

no one can comment on this song for the very reason this song exists. You're a coward. "we want you to act like nothing's wrong even though you heard a sound". Trump's America...

Judee Sill – Lopin’ Along Thru The Cosmos Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm lookin' so hard for a place to land,
I almost forgot how to fly
-----

There is some beautiful wisdom in this seemingly simple lyric. People who spend their lives in search of some elusive destination that they ignore the fact that their mere existence is the most amazing gift.

Steven, I really like your take on the flower bed idea. The song to me is about the sun being the giver and taker of life and the dichotomy of all that's beautiful is beautiful because it's also deadly.

Frente – Lonely Lyrics 14 years ago
This is just about the most beautiful and hopeful song every composed on the subject of loneliness. The subject is absolutely uncompromising. Life can be as simple or as complicated as you care to make it.

Rhett Miller – Things That Disappear Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about an idealist and the belief in the impermanence of love. That's why it sounds weird, because most people in love think it will last forever - but it changes and with that change comes complexity and the woman in the song doesn't seem to have the emotional capacity to deal with it so she moves on when things get heavy. She thinks she has love figured out hence the: "she don't WONDER anymore" line. Love to her is for the moment like a sunset, rainbow or flower.

Ben Folds – Still Fighting It Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about a man who knew he wasn't going to stick around and it's almost like a passive pep talk informing his son that growing up without him is going to be rough but you can't give in, you've got to fight it. I think the "your so much like me, I'm sorry" is him projecting that his son is going to go through the same problems growing up that he encountered. I think a lot of fathers go through such a thing when they see the same issues and personality defects that they have showing up in their children either through nurture or nature. Either way it's quite a sad song and it's too bad so many men and women for that matter have to be this way with their children. It's a lesson on how you really need to come to terms with your past issues before you can have children. I think a lot of people who don't come to terms with their issues think it's better to leave and not subject their children to it but that probably just creates worse issues in the child because they grow up thinking THEY were the ones with the problem. Children are forgiving and all they really need is a hug.

I think the reason why I love so many of Ben Folds songs is that he really is one of the few artists out there that really delves into the depths of human relations.

KT Tunstall – Hopeless Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is a paean to hopelessness. The fact that once she got down to the nadir there is nowhere for her to go but up. If she exhausts everyone's expectations for her then she can finally be what she really wants to be.

The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a song about a person who has a ton of passion but no direction. He wants to do something and has strong beliefs but for some reason he can't get off his ass because he's feels like he's being pulled in too many different directions. He's got soul (passion) but not a soldier (does not join the fight). He feels like time is running out and people are giving up on him. I like the fact that they titled the song "All these things that I have done" yet all he talks about in the song is what he wants to do. He's all talk, no action. A great song along the same lines as this one is Ocean Size by Jane's Addiction. "I wanna be more like the ocean, no talking man all action"

Sage Francis – Makeshift Patriot Lyrics 16 years ago
I was going through my mp3 collection today and came upon this song. In the months after Sept 11th I must have listened to this song on a daily basis and now 7 years later the song is still as relevant and true as ever. In my opinion this is the most definitive work to come out of that tragedy.

"Some of them dug for answers in the mess but the rest were looking for trouble"

Truer words were never spoken.

A song for
Someone who needs somewhere
To long for

It's a song for all those who daydream about doing something different but for whatever reason came up with other motives not to do it. Sometimes we just need the comfort that we could have been something more

Pete Townshend – The Sea Refuses No River Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe we are all rivers and the sea is death. We are all equal and the same because no one here is immortal. If we all just realized this ultimate equality then we would no longer judge each other by our differences because we are all the same in the end.

Radiohead – You and Whose Army? Lyrics 16 years ago
rhllwyd I just came here to post something similar. I think he's comparing the US and Britain corporate hegemony to the Holy Roman Empire is a way that show their willingness to move the world from freedom to feudalism and this song is about how strong we all are with our voices and pens in opposition to this current dissolution of our human rights yet when it comes to action we ride nothing but ghost horses. Oh so sad...

Electric Light Orchestra – Livin' Thing Lyrics 16 years ago
actual the lyrics seem to fit comforting a depressed friend after a miscarriage more than they fit abortion. The first verse is the conception "slipping and sliding...it's magic" to the last verse "So let her go don't start spoiling the show It's a bad dream". But it could easily just be about the breakdown of love.

"it's only in uncertainty that we're naked and alive" possibly the most prescient line in music history. Every time I get worried about taking risks I think of this line.

This song is about the battle that takes place daily between the heart and mind. Truly amazing.

Radiohead – Knives Out Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the cannibalism is a metaphor kinda like it is in the song "Of Course" by Jane's Addiction when Perry Farrell says: "one must eat the other who runs free before him put him right into his mouth, while fantasizing the beauty of his movements a sensation not unlike slapping yourself in the face". The ugly truth of the world is that it truly is dog eat dog. Now our society has evolved to the point that we don't actually eat each other but this "cannibalism" takes a different form - that of commerce. This song is about a father who is leaving his son (and not coming back) who has not learned how to make his way in this world. He spends his last days with the boy trying to teach him how to "catch a mouse" going so far as to kill it himself so he can eat it and get the same taste for blood that has served his father well. But I get the sense that the son does not want to learn this lesson from his father because he's leaving his family and the son does not want to be that kind of father. The boy wants to maintain his good heart and those are the kind of people society eats alive...

Crowded House – World Where You Live Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a song about a girl who lived next door to Neil Finn. He said he never saw her - only heard her wild life that she lived at 6am. So it's basically Neil playing Dr. Freud to a sex addict.

Crowded House – Distant Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
I always thought it was "Wise enough to carry the scars without and pain, there's no one to blame." Funny, that line as I heard it has been such an inspiration to me throughout my life to take responsibility for my own failures and not show that they hurt me in any way. I will continue to sing the song the way I heard it because it means so much to me.

It's such a beautiful, uplifting song and I love playing it for my two sons.

Crowded House – Nails in My Feet Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I believe this song is about a one sided relationship where one person is always taking advantage of the one who is sacrificing (nails in your feet - Jesus reference?). The first two verses detail his selfishness and how he feels he doesn't have the capacity to change. But then in the third verse he dreams of changing (wear the nails in your feet) and rejoices when his companion gives as good as she gets ("warms my heart to see that you can do it too") when she finally stands up to him. He loves her but he's has limited ability to reciprocate.

The Constantines – Love in fear Lyrics 17 years ago
I think he uses words like spite, lust and desire to portray the unhealthiness and danger of loving in fear. The thought that love can cure your ills (don't take me to the hospital...just kiss me on the rooftop) is basically the frenzy that a person can wrap themselves in when the fear of losing love (that they most times have already lost or have never had) trumps reason. All the evil in the world is driven by people who mistake love for a possession.

They Might Be Giants – Shoehorn With Teeth Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about a very opinionated and judgemental guy who never leaves his room for fear of being judged himself. He wants to fit into society but only on his own terms -which he believes can never happen. Hence the shoehorn with teeth. Touring the world with the heavy metal band, sitting on the chair with the girl all happen in his imagination while he's curled up in the fetal position in his bed. (returning to the womb)

Matthew Sweet – Knowing People Lyrics 18 years ago

Counting Crows – Omaha Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about a man who is caught up in the constantly drudgery of habit and doesn't have the desire or ability to break it. The "walk on water" line I think refers to his inability to transcend his current situation. Caught up in the details of life never exploring the real cosmic questions. This is a roundabout way of saying the unexamined life is not worth living.

Jane's Addiction – Of Course Lyrics 19 years ago
I was listening to Radiohead's Knives Out recently and something about that song reminded me of this one. Both are incredible songs that cut right to the bone of the Darwinian existential existence that is life on earth. Here's the Radiohead lyric that reminded me of course:

So knives out
Catch the mouse
Don't look down, shove it
In your mouth

Both of these songs explore the irony of loving life yet having to consume life in order to sustain it. This happens literally when we eat and figuratively when we do what we do in order to get money to eat.

They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics 19 years ago
the beauty of all TMBG songs is how they take really ugly truths about the world (that a son would care so little about a mother that he only values her for her bank account) and make it into a fun little song that you can whistle to. It's the secret to a bitterless existence. Just like George Carlin says: Life is a freak show and when we are born we all get a ticket. Enjoy the show.

Pink Floyd – Brain Damage Lyrics 19 years ago
I just watched the excellent Dark side of the Moon dvd, it was excellent. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd I suggest you pick it up. Lots of great stuff. Waters does an acoustic version of Brain Damage. He explains the grass thing as a patch of beautiful grass that - he used to see in Cambridge that no one was ever allowed to walk on - and to do so would be to step outside of society. He said the song was pretty much about Syd and how society views people like Syd. They like to label them lunatics but they are often just people who don't want to follow the same rules as the rest of us. Quite a fine line.

The Shins – Caring Is Creepy Lyrics 19 years ago
This, like all beautiful songs leaves itself open to all kinds of interpretations

The real telling line in the song to me is

"Far above our head are the icy heights that contain all reason"

This is a very poetic take on Socrates great line: "I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance"

The beginning of the song seems like the author is in a conversation and is being persuaded to give an opinion on something he's not quite sure about or maybe is afraid to confront for it might take him to a dark place that may distract him from material goals. I think that might be where the title comes from - Caring is creepy as opposed to ignorance being bliss "Never betray the way you've always known it is" is just another way of taking the easy way out in life by accepting the first theory presented to you as gospel truth and then self-righteously lay bricks of certainty that are built into nothing in the end because they cannot be proven.

The importance of life is to alway wonder - just never forget that your know nothing.

"Never got cold wearing nothing in the snow"

People who coat themselves with layers of beliefs that they are certain are true and are afraid of taking off those layer for fear of being naked in the cold. That is where the truth lies.

Genesis – Supper's Ready Lyrics 19 years ago
Every time I listen to this song I come away with an entirely different meaning depending on what stage of life I am in. That's the beauty of this song, it is open to all kinds of interpretations. It's always a different version of the "All you need is love" theme. Right now when I listen to it I think of it as two lovers who have strayed. One, feeling the loss of love in his life he takes a biblical journey experiencing all the false prophets in life that promise to lead you to love and happiness. In the end he has the "revelation" that the only thing true in life is love.
