The Kinks – Sunny Afternoon Lyrics 19 years ago
Why no comments on "Sunny Afternoon"? It's a classic! there doesn't seem to be much love in general for the kinks on this site, based on the low number of comments. More people should be listening to the kinks! This song is a perfect example of why - lashing out at the tax system while telling the story of a man who refuses to give up his luxuries, despite his lack of money.

The Velvet Underground – Jesus Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great song thats very pretty and probably the song off of "The Velvet Underground" that first caught my attention. This song actually reminds me of Meddle-era Pink Floyd, of all people. I'm not really sure why, but i think its the opening guitar line. The lyrics are incredibly straightforward and lead me (and everyone else, im sure) to wonder if there is a hidden or deeper meaning than is apparent. It doesnt seem ironic though.

The Jam – Man In the Corner Shop Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great Jam song, and one of the highlights off of "sound affects" so im surprised no one has commented. The lyrics are pretty simple, and mostly i think about everybody wanting what someone else has. The only especially interesting thing is probably the turn around of the phrase "god created all mean equal," which in this case doesn't refer to equal rights, but rather to the idea that all sorts of people essentially act the same way. The factory worker wants to be his own boss, while the man in the corner shop wants to work in a factory. Everybody is equal in that they want something that someone else has, regardless of their social status.

The B-52's – 52 Girls Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not quite sure what this song means, though it sounds vaguely political to me. The vocals in this song are incredibly intersting to me because you basically can't understand most anything except "these are the girls of the USA." I find it fascinating that they used somewhat unusual names and stretched them out as they sang them so that they could basically be any word or name the lsitener chooses to hear. Great song

The Jam – Down In The Tube Station At Midnight Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, the lyrics are fairly self-explanatory: guy gets beat up in a tube-station by guys who wil lsoon go after his wife. Its a pretty unsetteling song. I didn't actually know what the lyrics were about (besides tube stations in general) because theyre so fast and british that theyre pretty hard to discern. Therefore, i was pretty shocked when i finally figured out what it was about.

Violent Femmes – Kiss Off Lyrics 20 years ago
I think both the drug addiction and the suicide ideas make perfect sense based on the lyrics. I would lean toward the drug thing because of the lines "its not enough, its just a habit" and the permanent record part. Because a suicide attempt would not be something that a teacher would threaten to put on your record. But getting caught with drugs? Perhaps. Great song anyway

Wire – 12XU Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually "smoking a fag" is British slang for smoking a cigarette, and most liekly not a reference to "gay porn". I don't know how much meaning should be interpreted from this song, but my guess would be its about a guy who caught his girlfriend cheating. The "XU" part of the title suggests to me that he's tryign to get rid of something, since I guessed that X=get rid of and U= you.
