Radiohead – Bodysnatchers Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about feeling desensitized, dehumanized and marginalized in the modern world. I also think it speak of the causes of this, living in nanny states like Britain, being bombarded by the media, and always being told what to think and believe by the government and corporations.

"I do not
Understand
What it is
I've done wrong"

I think this is a direct reference to our world and society becoming more and more restrictive on the freedoms and choice of the individual. For instance, in a large number of western countries more and more legislation and policies are brought to bear that restricts the freedom of the an individual to make choices that affects only herself. This includes things like smoking laws, high 'sin taxes' on items like tobacco and alcohol, laws against recreational drug use, prostitution, etc...

Also, we are often told by 'what to think' and which opinions we should have against certain ideas and stereotypes, like the 'arab terrorist', unpatriotic citizen, the racist, etc, by politicians and the media.

Increasingly, we are being monitored and under surveillance. This leads to a sentiment of having done something wrong and feeling like a suspect for no reason.

"Full of holes
Check for pulse
Blink your eyes
One for yes
Two for no"

All these forces in our daily lives cause us to feel empty and confused, "full of holes". We are all brushed by the same stroke, no one, or very few can be unique. There is no room for the individual. This leaves us feeling like Zombies with no pulse.

We are unable to decide for our self how to live our lives, we have no power. We can only blink, our only choices are yes and no. Either you choose to accept this life, or you will live in misery and be rejected and dismissed by society.

"You killed the sound
Removed backbone
A pale imitation
With the edges
Sawn off"

I think 'sound' refers to our will to live, sort like the 'music within us', that is killed by 'you', referring to all the agents that supress us. Our will to stand up and rebel against it, our backbone, is pacified and controlled. We as people and our lives are just 'pale imitations', the edges sawn off so that we'll fit the mould.

"I have no idea what you are talking about
Your mouth moves only with someone's hand up your ass"

I have no control over my thoughts and opinions, I can only regurgatate what is being force fed to me.

"Has the light gone out for you?
Because the light's gone for me"

I think this refers to dissociation that we feel towards each other. We all experience the emotions referred to in the song, but we don't share it with each other, we are in fact disunited by it.

"It is the 21st century
It is the 21st century
It can follow you like a dog
It brought me to my knees"

But this is just the world and times that we live in, I have no control over it. It follows me like a dog, it's everywhere I go.
I also think that "being followed like a dog" refers to being under constant surveillance and suspicion. "It brought me to my knees", I had submit to it.

"They got a skin and they put me in
They got a skin and they put me in
All the lines wrapped around my face
All the lines wrapped around my face
And for anyone else to see
And for anyone else to see

I'm a lie"

This again refers to the hollowed shell of an individual, a zombie. I think "The lines wrapped around my face" refers to a sort of marionette. The strings control our "faces", or emotions.

In the end, everyone knows that you are a lie and you can't stop it.

Here's my take on the song. It's about someone that he's in love with, who is already in another relationship. He's probably also in a relationship and feels trapped. He is trying to convince her to leave her husband/boyfriend because she'll be happier with him.

"I don't wanna be your friend
I just wanna be your lover"

He acts as if they're friends, because he has to.

"No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts"

Basically he doesn't care about the repercussions, if her/his current lovers get hurt, or even if they hurt each other in the end.

"Forget about your house of cards
And I'll do mine"

Once again, this is about the idea of not worrying about the consequences of doing this, because their current situations are a 'house of cards', bound to collapse anyway. But he does not want to take this step alone, he is afraid that he might show his feelings for her and that she will not do the same.

"Fall off the table,
And get swept under"

I think the table refers to a 'solid structure' and safety in life, like a dinner or kitchen table that you'll find in most suburban homes. He encouraging her to 'fall of the table' or take a wild chance and 'get swept under', experience life from a difference perspective.

"Denial, denial"

This is the heart of this song. He is referring to her denial of what's she wants in life and the instability
of her current relationship. But he sings 'denial' twice and I think that he is also referring to his own denial, that is, what will happen if they actually leave their partners.

"The infrastructure will collapse
From voltage spikes"

He is trying to warn this woman about what will happen if she stays with her partner. The 'infrastruture' he is referring to is a loveless way to desribe her relationship, which will collapse from sudden, unexpected 'spikes' of emotion that have been suppressed and denied from a long time. The nasty way he is talking about it hints at a selfishness in his warning. It's not just that he cares about her getting hurt, he also wants her for himself.

"Your ears are burning
Denial, denial"

Once again, this has a double meaning. He is trying to tell the woman that her 'ears should be burning' with the truth of his words, but I also think he is doubting himself and he feels he should be ashamed of his actions. I think deep down, he even doubts if she feels the same, and that the whole thing might just one-sided dillussion.

Anyway...I love this song. It has such a sweet desperation to it. I can relate to that feeling of wanting someone so much that you really don't care about the consequences, that you would lie to yourself because of the idea of being with her...

This Song is about the angst, alienation, fear and exitement of being and becoming a teenager or young adult. The first verse describes a teen going to a social event eg. a party:
Load up on guns
bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend

-Even though the party is supossed to be fun, it is percieved to be a hostile enviroment because of all the social pressures that are put on teenagers, like war zone. And in the place the person in the song is constantly "losing" eg. failing to be popular but still pretends that they are having a good time.

She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

-These two lines have a lot of meaning. "She" is an object of this teenagers desire, the typical "girl that I Adore, but she does'nt know I exist". She is seen as being Over-Bored by her peers and self assured and generally not attainable. The teenager feels threatened by her prescence, and feels he has to over-compensate to impress her. The next line is sort of the result of this over-compensating, the teenager acts older and more self assured than he feels. This results in a feeling of shock and dissassosiation at the loss of childhood innoccence (Oh no, I know a dirty word). In otherwords, this person is giving up his childhood to pretend to be someone that he is not. Kurt had a dreamer personality, someone who had to learn the harsh realities of life the hard way, probably a lot in his teenager years and he was saddened by this.

Well that is just my thoughts on the first part of this song. I could go on about what the rest of it means but that would take me all day. If someone would like to know the rest let me know.
Also, although I also don't think this is the best Nirvana song, I still think that it's really good and it has a lot more meaning than people think. I think Kurt didn't even purposely think about the meaning of the song when he wrote it, but it sort of came out by itself. He was such a naturally creative person. Anyway, this song rocks and Nirvana will rock forever!!!
