Jackyl – Down On Me Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Even AC/DC would find this song's innuendo a little, y'know, obvious. Catchy one, though! |
M. Ward – Hold Time Lyrics | 15 years ago |
These lyrics sound better to my ears: You were beyond comprehension tonight But I understood I understood If only I could Hold time Hold time Hold time Words have failed me tonight, failed me tonight But you knew what I meant You knew what I meant Yeah you heard what I said The whole time The whole time Whole time And I wrote this song about it Cuz I didn't care about any worthless photograph Yeah I wrote this song just to remember The endless endless summer in your laugh Endless summer in your laugh |
Tracey Thorn – Raise The Roof Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I feel like this is sent out to a DJ ("When you do/That thing you do/Love comes through/You raise the roof..."). So it seems to me that the way to Tracey Thorn's heart is through spinning. I better get on that. |
Marvelous 3 – Cigarette Lighter Love Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's about Marvelous 3 breaking up, but written as a metaphor for a relationship. Butch explains it on his solo live record This Is Me...Justified and Stripped. The first line of the chorus "All that I do..." is pretty much a direct rip of the first line of of the chorus in "All The Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople. Par example: All that I do/comes back to you vs. All the young dudes/carry the news I mean...come on! Anyway I'm sure it was Butch's way of paying tribute to his glam rock forefathers, but I can't help but think about it every time I hear "Cigarette". |
Morrissey – I Have Forgiven Jesus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think this song is more about sexual repression (be it homosexual or heterosexual, Moz doesn't really make it clear) due to staunch religiosity. Being someone who was raised Catholic and had to grapple with the classic guilt--especially when it comes to the realm of the sexual--during my teenage years, I can really identify with the narrator's voice* in this song. *Because, as several people pointed out already, this isn't necessarily Morrissey himself speaking in the song. "oh pretty one Why did you give me so much desire? when there is nowhere I can go to offload this desire" This sounds to me like the narrator is pining after someone he can't (to put it vulgarly) screw because of the vows of chastity he feels he owes to Jesus. |
R.E.M. – Drive Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The whole "bushwhacked - George Bush and John Kerry election" connection. I don't buy it. C'mon kids. Think deeper. This song came out in 1992, for pete's sake. Put down American Idiot for one minute and actually listen to this song. The tune is influenced--musically and lyrically--by David Essex's "Rock On". Michael Stipe has admitted this. Give it a listen and see the similarities. Both great tunes in their own right. Personally, I think Stipe was trying re-write Essex's song (which, in itself, is brooding in its commentary on kids and rock'n'roll music) with a little bit more irony thrown in. |
Tilly and the Wall – The Freest Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Whether or not it's about Conor (and I can see how it could be) it's apparently about a guy who has some kind of addiction (either to alcohol or drugs). The voice in the song is expressing how much she wants him to be free from it. Damn, it's a catchy tune too. |
The Doobie Brothers – What A Fool Believes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
An incredibly sad tune about a man who's deluded by his love for a woman. The guy doesn't realize that not only is she going to leave him ("anybody else would surely know he's watching her go"), but she's never coming back ("why can't love return once more"). In love, hope springs eternal. And in this case, it's the hope of a fool. |
Rilo Kiley – It Just Is Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"This loss isn't good enough for sorrow or inspiration..." In other words, what a WASTE. We miss you, Elliott. |
Rainer Maria – Long Knives Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love the ENERGY in this tune--both the music and the message. To me, here's the message: sure, our relationship is messed up--hell, WE'RE messed up. But let's stay together and we'll take "the whole world on, back to back, long knives drawn" just like we used to. And it's especially cool hearing a woman singing on a track like this. |
Mary Lou Lord – His Indie World Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Another charming song with a pretty obvious meaning; this one is about how her guy is into all these obscure indie bands, but she prefers the folkier rock stuff like Joni (Mitchell), Nick (Drake), Neil (Young), and Bob (Dylan). Personally, I'd give up every obscure Silver Jews 7-inch I had to get with Miss Mary Lou...bring on the Dylan! |
Snow Patrol – An Olive Grove Facing the Sea Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is the kind of song that can save your life, if you need it enough. It is mind-numbingly, yet savagely sweet. To call this song "beautiful" would be redundant (since everyone else above already has called it that). It is sublime. Superlatives fail me. |
Fountains of Wayne – All Kinds Of Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I agree, the guitar at the end of the song sounds kind of like "Vindicated". Also, it made me think of the "Yellow" song riff by Coldplay. P.S. Interesting note, the guitar solo in this song is played by James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame. I guess FOW must be friends with him or something. |
Longpigs – On And On Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song kind of captures the helpless feeling you get when you're in love with someone who may not be in love with you...you're entirely in their hands. Great song. Think it's on the Mission Impossible soundtrack. |
The Postal Service – Nothing Better Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song hurts to listen to. Musically, it's catchy and melodic, but lyrically, it's like listening to a bitter argument between lovers, one who's given up on the relationship (Jen Wood's voice), and one who still wants to keep it going (Ben's voice). I really like the form of the song, with Jen and Ben's lines overlapping each others'...like a lovers' argument where both people are trying to get a word in edgewise. It reminds me of an opera aria duet form, where two singers have a "conversation" in song, and they'll harmonize with each other and sing over each other's lines in the conversation. See Mozart's "Duettino Sull'aria" from The Marriage of Figaro for a classic example of this. I know, it's kind of a strange comparison putting The Postal Service up against Mozart, but good music is good music, after all. |
Rilo Kiley – I Never Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's a pretty straightforward song- Jenny is just kind of spilling her heart out in the lyrics about her love. And according to Blake, she recorded this one naked in the studio (to give her vocals that 'completely exposed and vulnerable' feel to the song). It works. |
Mariah Carey – Always Be My Baby Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think everyone else has covered the song's meaning pretty well. It's about the confidence of knowing that you and another person are destined for each other, despite being apart from them at present time. I'd like to say that I typically detest the r&b poppy stuff that makes up most of Mariah's catalog--and yet, this song is really well written...and RIDICULOUSLY catchy. Can't help it, I gotta like it. |
Ryan Adams – Firecracker Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Here's a very random interpretation: Although Ryan wrote this album before September 11, 2001, the last stanza really sounds like a tribute to the passengers on the flight that crashed in Somerset County in Pennsylvania. Read carefully: so when does the plane go down 'cause i'm gonna ride it 'til it hits the ground then go out with a fight... I doubt it's what Ryan intended, but it kind of works, on one level. Creepy. |

Fountains of Wayne – All Kinds Of Time Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Taken literally, it's a song about a quarterback in a football game, getting the ball hiked to him, looking around, and seeing the open man to pass the ball to. But if you don't pay attention to the words, it sounds like a soul-fulfilling power ballad. Great tune, either way. |
Blur – Good Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Agreed- I have no idea why more people haven't heard this song. It's oddly catchy and lyrically simple, which makes a great combination. I definitely recommend checking out the video (link is in the post above). |
Sublime – Eye of Fatima Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Camper Van Beethoven did it originally. Good song, bizarre lyrics. |
Rooney – Popstars Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The "Well I don't want to be with you tonight, forever" line probably refers to a song by Avril Lavigne called "Tonight and Forever". Just a guess. I've never heard the song, I just googled "Tonight and Forever" and that's what came up. I figure they're probably lumping Avril in with Britney and 'Nsync. Sounds about right. Good tune. |
Massive Attack – Protection Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Protection that comes from being loved by someone- it could be between a boy and a girl, or a parent and child. Beautiful emotional lyrics- one of the most evocative electronic songs I've ever heard. |
The Corrs – Closer Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Just a beautiful song about someone who is often misunderstood, yet the song's singer cares enough to look a little deeper at this person, to see the beauty inside and cheer their heart. Great melody, with the always lovely voices of the Corr sisters. |
The Shins – Saint Simon Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is definitely Beatle-esque. I couldn't give it any higher compliment than that- just a phenomenal tune. |
Counting Crows – Goodnight LA Lyrics | 20 years ago |
FYI, WickEd, Leonard Cohen wrote "Hallelujah". Rufus just covered it. Even better is Jeff Buckley's version of the song- check it out! Yet another beautiful song about how Adam can't sleep. The guy's a posterboy for the benefits of insomnia. |
Nickel Creek – Beauty and the Mess Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The lyrical voice of this song seems to be that of a musician. Check out this section: "All they get of you is what they get out of the show/ The rest is mine, I guess the beauty and the mess" I think the musician's voice is saying that they can only give so much of themselves to the audience at "the show". Meanwhile, offstage, the musician himself (or herself) has to deal with the pain, the joy, and the poetry that's all part of the creative process. The musician dubs this creative process "the beauty and the mess". Those Nickel Creek kids are so talented- I love 'em. |
The Sundays – Goodbye Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This songs has a near-perfect combination of beautiful melody and poetic lyrics. These lines give me goosebumps, as the song hits the climax and Harriet Wheeler's voice soars into a lyric of mock resignation: "So is this what it's come to? Am I cold or just a little bit warm? Oh, well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death..." |
Eels – Fresh Feeling Lyrics | 20 years ago |
love this song- there's nothing terribly complicated about it- just simple lyrics, a string section and drum loops--and therein lies its appeal! just a catchy, feel-good tune... |
Dada – Moon Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This song is really beautiful, and very sad. Presumably, it's about a breakup, a painful one, possibly due to a suicide ("you had a chance to save your life, but you never did"). A great and sad tune, highly underrated. Check it out. |
