Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics 18 years ago
This song simply put is about Britishpresence around the world, mostly militant. It starts in a British citizen wanting to do good and needing to find a job. "Have you got yourself an occupation" is the British government when they were trying to build up their military force and suggesting young men to go into that field. The chorus, "Olivers Army" is a reference to Oliver Cromwell, but its not specifically talking about the things he did as a person. "And I would rather be anywhere else but here today" signify's the citizen's and Costello's opinion against this militant takeover of the world. In the next verse, they make reference to a place called Checkpoint Charlie on the british wall where there was a lot of military, not british, but military presence. The murder mile can reference to a place in Ireland, OR in upper hackney in London, both fit. "Only takes one itchy trigger" obvious is talking about guns and shootings. "One more widow, one less white nigger", this is talking about their apathetic view towards the military killing, and also using such a strong word, they make reference to unacceptance of different religions and races. In the next verse, basically its talking about different types of groups of people and places. "Hong Kong is up for grabs" is reference to Hong Kong when it was under British rule. Then its talking about other places it could conquer next, such as palestine. Then, "With the boys from the mersey and the thames and the tyne" is just talking about how they could go about conquering places from 3 different major rivers in europe. Then we go back to Britain trying to convince the youth that its a good idea to join the military with "theres no danger, its a professional career." They want to make boys feel grown up. Churchill is the Prime Minister, so of course he is mentioned. Finally, "if you're out of luck, you're out of work we could send you to Johannesburg." is meaning Johannesburg, South Africa, in which the British tried to solidify by sending more and more of their people there, and eventually getting into a war with the people. Theres the long explination.

Pixies – Levitate Me Lyrics 19 years ago
To start off, the lyrics for this song are wrong. They've been kind of pieced together so far.
But anyways....to me this song is about Religion AND sex.
Clues:
"Take off them rings" -Take off a marriage ring...its not needed.
:Off them holes" - Maybe an obscure reference to the holes in Jesus's hands from the cross....as in saying to take off religion.
"Elevator Lady, Levitate Me" -This seems to be someone controlling the proverbial elevator between heaven and hell.
"Shakey shake...hey shakey!" - This seems to be reference to a religious group, known as the shakers.
"Come on pilgrim, you know he loves you." This can be taken two ways...a strictly religious way, or a religion and sex way. The completely religious way would talk about "he" being jesus. saying "come on pilgrim, you know jesus loves you." this would be taken then as sarcasm. The religion and sex way would be someone saying "come on pilgrim, you know he loves you." as in come on, he loves you so have sex with him. I may be wrong, but I think the pilgrims came over for religious freedom, so i think they both could go hand in hand.

The song does not literally translate into "fool the world." For it in french to translate into "fool the world" it would have to be TrompER le Monde" Trompe le Monde, as it is exactly titled...actually translates into "Cheat the world."

Bad Religion – You Don't Belong Lyrics 19 years ago
bluetears I think i know some others...some aren't 100% though, but they'd be a good guess.

Heres my list:
1. "Tom took his life in his mother's car": Tom Clements, from Give You Nothing, died in a car accident.
2. "Milo went to college but you knew about that": Milo Aukerman from the Descendents, also "Milo goes to college" is the title of one of the Descendents albums.
3. "Rodney played our record": Rodney "on the rock" show from local Southern California station KROQ who played Bad Religion fo the first time on the radio.
4. "GG started riots": GG Allen obviously, he was one crazy guy so riots fits perfectly.
5. "Laurie was always quiet, she was battlin' depression": This could possibly be Laurie Anderson, the only one alternative/punk music in the business I can think of with the name Laurie.
5. "Jack wore a skirt but he knew how to scrap": Jack Grisha, singer for TSOL, he was known to wear a skirt on stage.
6. "Billy went to county on a class one possession": Mr. Brett himself (as in No Control's Billy Gnosis) This was reference to when he was caught with ten balloons of heroin and was ordered by the court to go to rehab.
7. "Wendy went to school while her daddy shot smack": Mr. Brett's daughter makes sense to this one.
8. "Eugene kept a list": This one isn't known for sure, but my guess since Eugene isn't that common of a name is that it is supposed to be Eugene Reynolds of The Rezillos.
9. "Mugger was security": Mugger was the roadie From Black Flag.
10. "Mary she kept her purity": Mary Harron, news reporter/publisher, possibly sarcasm with the line here.

The only person I am still trying to figure out who she is, Is "Missy was a teen blue video star."
Hope this helped

Shai Hulud – Beliefs And Obsessions Lyrics 19 years ago
Its talking about religion, and how people shouldn't cross the line from just believing, to it being an obsession and them becoming a complete religious fanatic.

Lies of self-indulgent pride
*Religion makes one look good

A sense of justice misdirected for the sake of the lost

A claim to inflict punishment for those who have been unjust
*Religion says how those who have eben unjust will go to hell.

And there’s a line that can’t be crossed between belief and obsession
*People should not cross the lien from it being okay to believe, to takeing it to an extreme obsession.

Nonexistent caring based on situation ethics.
*Its saying how people are caring about something they don't even know exists.

No benefit can come from the line being drawn.

To be guided by faith, is to be.
Is to be mislead.
*this is stated pretty clearly that to be completely guided by your religion is to be mislead and not told the truth.

A joke to the weak, a fixation to the strong.
*The religious people say its one of their fixations, and that people who just find it to be a big joke are the weak ones.

So who’s wrong, and who will decide what’s right?
*Its asking who's wrong...is there or isn't there a god? and how will we find out?

With so few actions, so many words.
Won’t take this complacency anymore.
*So many people talk about it, but so few people do anything about it, so this issue can't just take to being submissive anymore.

I won’t accept the criticism of my peers
I won’t accept this objection.
I cannot judge others lives only to justify my own
*He's saying how religious people judge other's lives to justify how they are living theirs, and he can't do that.

One more word and I’m broken
One more word.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Name Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't consider this song to be about true orphans. Here's my song dissection:

And even though the moment passed me by I still can't turn away
*Something has already passed, but he keeps thinking about it and reliving it.

The dreams you never thought you'd lose tossed along the way
*She did so much thinking about whatever happened in her past and she put aside all her dreams and aspirations because of this.

Letters that you never meant to send lost or thrown away
*Letters usually include deep feelings, and it kind of means her feelings are lost, confused, and some emotions are completely gone.

And now we're grown up orphans that never Knew their names
*Its saying how they're grown up, and when it says how they never knew their names, I don't think its refering to their actual names. I think its refering to their personalities and their real selves.

Don't belong to no one that's a shame
*They were kind of estranged from their family so they kind of dont' belong to anyone or have anyone else besides themself to be close to.

You could hide beside me maybe for a while
And I won't tell no one your name
*He won't use her or make up things about who she is.

I won't tell em' your name

Scars are souvenirs you never lose , the past is never far
*Its not talking about real scars. This is talking about emotional scars, and how the past is always close at hand because it hurt.

Did you lose yourself somewhere out there , did you get to be a star
*He's asking if something happened out there that made her lose herself and who she really was, and if she ever did the things she dreamed of and became the person she wanted to be but gave up.

Don't it make you sad to know that life is more that who we are
*He says that even though things have been bad for both of us, theres more to life than just them separately and they need to get past those problems.

You grew up way too fast and now there's Nothing to believe
*He's saying that because of her hard life, she grew up way too fast, and she can't believe anything because of all the lies she's been told.

And reruns all become our history
*She keeps talking about the past because its still such a big issue she hasn't gotten past in her life, and it affects everything she does because she's afraid of it repeating.

A tired song keeps playing on a tired radio
*This is saying how its getting kind of old and "tired" that she hasn't been able to try and upt it behind her so its like the record that keeps on playing.

And I won't tell no one your name
*He won't hurt her like others have.

I won't tell em' your name

I think about you all the time
But I don't need the same
*He says how he cares about her deeply and always is thinking about her and how she's doing, but he's going to be okay and he doesn't need all the attention.

It's lonely where you are come back down
And I won't tell em your name
*She kind of estranged herself from him because she was scared and he said that being all by herself is lonely and to come back to him because he won't hurt her.

No...its "To a WORD we hate" meaning the word love, which makes a lot more sense, this isn't a song about suicide.
and its "A Gaze apart with dead lovers eyes"
Slow the song down and listen to it at .5 instead of 1.00 and you'll get clearer lyrics.

For The Lines:
She came and went.
(*right on/runnin through my lips,
like a spinning/spitting*)?
Her (*rising psalms,

I Actually think its This (It seems to make more sense_:
she came and went
right on through lips
like a spirit in her rising souls
of preachers to say goodbye

Pixies – Wave of Mutilation Lyrics 20 years ago
This I think is talking about how suicide, and well more specifically death, is a release, and that even though you're dying you're actually freeing yourself. I think thats what this song is trying to say, its not condoning suicide, but its simply just saying about how death is freedom, its a release.

The Format – On Your Porch Lyrics 20 years ago
Combine what theMONDAYS and Nothing To Lose say, and I think we have an answer. "get out of the desert and into the sun". I think he is definitely refering to Phoenix as The Desert, and then another line later on "so now here i sit, in a hotel off of sunset", I believe definitely refers to califronia. Usually when somebody says Sunset they mean the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, so I think he's talking about going there to try and make a life for himself in the music business since he mentions his band and a guitar.

Contagion, listen very closely, it IS Every tear I never cried, I sealed your fucking fate. You can definitely hear the T sound in fate if you listen.
I do have to agere with you on the "Now I'm driven to be, ten times better than you think you are." you're exactly rigth about that. It definitely sounds more accurate than "now I'm driven to pay, just i'm better than you think you are."

This is, as everybody says, about friendship.

"And I want you to know,
how all of you made me,
how all of you saved me and,
I'll never replace the ones I first made, Jesus, does anyone?"
He's saying how without all his friends he couldn't do it. They saved him.

I also kind of have a feeling, even though its kind of vague, that "At the end of August" means like when he was young, and you know how school usually starts for kids in August? that the kids he first befriended that first month of school, in August, by the end of it they were the ones who he stuck with, and he always will.

This is definitely about suicide. examples:
"I have lost the will to live" -Come on, this screams suicide.
"Need the end to set me free" -This has to mean that only death will set him free from all this agony.
These are just a couple examples, but if you look at the song, almost every single line makes sense to suicide, and not about a stolen amp.

I have to agree with NecroKaizer, it really does sound as if it is saying "My last dance, and a fatal lie" and "I ran upstairs and cried all night.", and since I just got done listening to the few seconds of that part of the song for about 20 times, it actually seems to me now that it IS saying "My last dance and a fatal lie" This actually makes more sense than the first part because earlier in the verse it is talking about how the girls dancing aruond with a drink in her hand, though it is a very close call between the two.

myXchemicalXlife....you need to listen closer. it definitely says "A gaze apart with dead lovers eyes" not "case and point with dead lovers eyes" you don't here the "poi" sound in point you hear "par" instead which is part of the apart.

"White and blue and bloody red,
Stars and stripes for the mislead"
Meaning the United States
"Convenience stores with neon lights
Where burger kinsg rule tainted nights"
the westernization and culture of the US
"This sick atrophic stolen land"
Talking about how the land we stole from the Indians who were living here before us has been taken and we've destroyed the environment
and that its the same as "modern man's greed & hate & racism and what we have is a fucked up system", comparing them to both be dirty and polluted.

Wow...3rd entry...i was forgetful.
"or an asian or a mexican
or an african or a south african "
These lines....there were possible asian genocides...maybe he's talking about the cambodian genocide?, and as you can assume, a possible Mexican genocide and a South African Genocide? I think he's not just talking about Rwanda...he's jsut using Rwanda as the main example because its the most commonly thought of genocide to happen only a decade ago. I think he's talking about the U.S.'s hands off to foreign countries in trouble unless it has something that America will gain by helping them, hence the "human rights went on vacation
money took over a long time ago " lines.

Oh yeah, a point i forgot to add that nobody else seems to have put on there.
In refrence to the line:
"or a serbian or a libyian"
some people consider there to have been a serbian genocide in Kosovo, and the libyan genocide refers to the genocide of the Armenians. Just a little side note.

Definitely about the Rwandan Genocide of '94 during those 3 months in which millions were killed. This song is about the U.S.'s "hands-off" approach to the situation, and how they knew what was going on but they didn't give it much coverage or pretend it was happening. Only later did the UN Intervene and then they left shortly afterwards too.

Rx Bandits – Infection Lyrics 20 years ago
This is definitely, 100% about Heroin, and more specifically about this guy's addiction and wanting to get out of its grasps.
Evidence:
"Her empty needle is my unsharpened sword"
This must mean her full needle is his sharpened sword..makes sense towards heroin>
"don't wanna read it, don't wanna feel it
don't wanna hear it, don't even wanna think about it "
This is kind of explaining about how he knows he's addicted but he doesn't even want to think about it.
"and if i can't afford her my veins begin to ache "
Heroin's usually injected into a vein, and if a heroin user's body doesn't get more of it, which is hard to get because it can be an expensive habit, they start to go through withdrawl...aka "ache"
"well have you ever felt so high
that when you came down you broke inside"
Yes another refrence. Heroin gives you a great high, but like a number of drugs out there, when you come down it is incredibly strong.
"i know she won't take the blame, blame"
Nobody usually blaims the drug, they blame the user.
"you love me, you rip my heart out "
Here he's saying how the drug loves him, meaning gives him a high, and then it rips his heart out, meaning it has an awful comedown. Or it can also mean that when he first started using it it was grand but now its torn apart his life.
"you've broken me for too long now"
Obviously saying his life has been crippled for way too long because of his heroin addiction.

I'm wondering something...
The line:
"It's a song sung from a fallen milkman who's drinking bleach instead"...
Does this refrence to the Dead Milkmen? esp. their song the "Bleach Boys", which is about them drinking bleach...this just seems to make sense to me, because fallen can mean dead, and milkmen is right there, and the bleach part fits right in too...

Against Me! – I Still Love You Julie (Hanging on for a Scam) Lyrics 20 years ago
The person in the song is afraid to express their feelings, and then how he wishes how he could open up like all the drunk people could. He doesnt' watn to get mad at anybody tonight, he just wants to be friendly, even though he knows no matter how nice he is they will pretend they don't even know him the next day. Then he talks about how he saw a girl at a punk rock show, and for just that night they spent time together all alone that seemed so impossible, and how they had a great time, but the ending "maybe somehow this scam will still save us all" shows that the same thing happened to him with her as it did with all the other people he had met.

Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't agree that this song is intended to attack one political side or another. Yes it is political, but it is also meant to be satirical in my opinion, showing how over stupid political differences people go separate ways ("Do you remember '36 we went our separate ways, you fought for stalin i fought for fredom.") This song wasn't really in my opinion intended to be serious. The last line makes it sound kind of like its supposed to be a little rediculous "No I won't take your hand, and marry the state.", but thats just my opinion.

The Format – At the Wake Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm going to do a little "Song-Dissection" for this one, because theres so many good parts to it.

"So far from me stands a man known as disease, he's shaking all the hands of the people that he meets."
This to me means that the girl thinks theres something wrong with this guy, the "disease", but since he's obviously shaking everybodys hand theres nothing truely wrong with him.

"Now you just don't see me anymore, Now I've been losing everything, You just don't see me anymore, I'll say goodbye." This to me is the girl saying how the guy kind of sees how shes treating him and he doesn't watn to be with her anymore, and she's now seeing what shes missing and she's losing everything now, and that she'll have to say goodbye.

"Since you left she's a mess, she regrets all the things that seh could have said but...we fall asleep never think about anything, we wake to the sound of a phone as it hits the ground." This to me is her explaining whats wrong, that shes a mess now because he broke up with her and she regrets everything she said to him or wanted to, but she remember how they fell asleep and they kind of took what they had for granted because they never "think about anything", and the "We wake to the sound of the phone as it hits the ground" is kind of a metaphor for kind of a sudden rude awakening, as we all know that is, that they weren't together anymore and things fell apart.

"And oh at the wake, at the wake I will turn to see your face, just a face just a face so surrounded by a name, what a name, what a name and you never want to change what you gave, what you gave, never want to let go." This is the girls emotions. the "wake" kind of symbolic for the uncomfortable, sad, depressing feelings when she sees him around, and she looks and sees him, and she says how its just a face, but that face is surrounded by a "name", and what a name that is, because of what she had felt for him, and then she says how she never wants to let him go.

"So surround me, I need anything and you, you're everything. I watn to live like I did before all this hit, to sleep in your arms, to think we'll never fall apart." This to me is her plea for him to come back to her, because she needs someone and to her, he's her world. She wants to live in ignorance again like it was before the whole messy breakup happened.

"You know its such a drag to live your life for a heart attack, to never get a second chance to say goodbye" This shows that shes saying how much it hurts. I don't interpret this song as an actual heart attack, I see it as more of a heart break, and she says how she'll never get a second chance to say goodbye and make ammends.
Sorry this became so long, but I hope its a good, thorough and accurate!

The Format – A Save Situation Lyrics 20 years ago
This song to me is about how everybody makes mistakes.
This is made pretty clear by the "But I'll fall down again, Yeah we all fall down." This is saying how he will always make mistakes as we all will.
The verses seem to show an example of each of these.
and by the way...The correct lyric for the first part is "It feels like you've been asleep for days, The televisions on, I CAN'T stay awake".
