The Velvet Underground – Stephanie Says Lyrics 3 years ago
To me the key to understanding this song is to realize that Stephanie is not a person. Stephanie is the automatic voice operator for the state of Alaska, who has reached consciousness.
She hates the people she spends her whole life answering on the phone because she can’t be a part of their world. All she can do is ask “what country shall I say is calling from across the world”.
She’s not afraid to die because she’s not really alive. The entire thing is in her “mind”.
She is the door to the connections, but she can’t figure out why she can never leave the room. She wants to leave her electronic boxed in existence and be in the world, but she can’t. She’s so cold because even though she talks to people all day long she can never connect with them in any meaningful way, and it leaves her icy and cold hating all the people who can live in the real world.

Gordon Lightfoot – Carefree Highway Lyrics 3 years ago
My opinion is pretty literal on this song. I am carefree on the highway. Another way of saying I just don't care anymore, and everything I ever dreamed would be has died. Soooo, I don't care and let my car slip away off the highway to make it look like an accident.

The War On Drugs – Pain Lyrics 4 years ago
This song is about pain, obviously but this is how I break it down line by line.

Go to bed now I can tell - either really drunk / smashed or generally tired
Pain is on the way out now - because he can sleep
Look at the way the domino falls away - I see this as a moment where he watches a domino topple that hes playing with and its either in slow motion or significant due to the fact hes so out of it.

I know it's hard looking in - he doesnt like think about himself and sorting out something about himself

Knowing that tomorrow you'll be back again - he will wake up to be himself again
Hang your head and let me in, I'm waiting - waiting to drift off away from his troubles

So long

I was staring into the light
When I saw you in the distance, I knew that you'd be mine
Am I moving back in time?
Just standing still?

- i think this is a memory of someone he loved back in the day and now he thinks he isnt moving forward from it, maybe this is the root of his troubles

I met a man with a broken back
He had a fear in his eyes that I could understand
I can't even shake the hand
Without breaking it

- best lyrics in the song i think, he has the same fear as a man with broken back but couldnt even relate and thank the man, he feels wherever he goes he breaks everything, maybe the relationship above

I've been pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found

- many people feel they are looking for things, not content, and really they just need to enjoy what they have

I'm aware of the time we lost
Like a demon in the doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just begging

Pull me close and let me hold you in
Give me the deeper understanding of who I am
Yeah, I'm moving back again, I'm waiting, yeah

- i think he is talking about his love again, wishing her back, when hes with her, she helps him look inwards and understand why he is the way he is and come to terms. Very spirtitual i think, you must look within to understand the world.

I'm just pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change, own it in your own way
Yeah, I wanna find what can't be found

Tapping The Vein – The River Lyrics 5 years ago
While I see it can be about rejection in a relationship like others have stated, it can be interpreted in a spiritual, metaphorical sense.

"[...] to reach you." may not be about a person but about an inner state of peace and equilibrium which is personified because it (she) is so different from what the narrator is at the present moment:
"i can smell the rotting of my brain and
i'm shaking and i'm stammering
and tasting the stain of my fail...failure.
...
everyday i see rage in the mirror,
it's dripping from me, throbbing through me."

The narrator is in such a state of turmoil that she no longer recognises herself. The past self, her identity from before the problems begun, and/or the potential future self (if this turmoil will be overcome) who is at peace with herself, is addressed as if another person, one who is desperately needed: "i am nothing but a need to reach you."

This line (and thus the person she talks to throughout the whole song) can also be interpreted as addressing God, asking for help when in a state of extreme despair.

In any case, it's an idea the narrator clings to while facing circumstances that are crushing her, filling her with anger and self disgust, to the point where she is contemplating suicide just to get away.("i'm gonna crawl into a hole and fill me in / cause this thing will suffocate me / so, you see, the only difference is when.)

I think it happens to many people when they go through extreme things to keep reaching towards and obsessing desperately about something which becomes a lifeline that keeps them from sinking wholly so that they can keep focused on fighting through, whether it's a memory, the hope for a better future, the affection of a loved one or God. That's what I think this song is about.

@[Tyriel:29376] May be. I like songs such as this which allow you to interpret them in more than one way.

This one may be about a love relationship, but also about some other kind of relationship (tensioned close friendship, mother-daughter etc.), also about addiction, about an obsession or about a mental illness/personality disorder (I'm thinking manic-depressive, everyday she fights not to miss the "highs" when she's in the "lows").

Dead Sara – Lemon Scent Lyrics 5 years ago
I think it's about the shallowness of society and bullying (in school too, but mostly in society in general).

There is a "right" way to be and anybody who wants to be accepted or even allowed to live has to meet that standard (in both physical appearance and psychological state / lifestyle):
The scene is contagious / For the pretty / But I'm fat and ugly
Deep as the surface / For the happy / But I'm sad and lonely

Whoever doesn't has to either fake it or suffer the consequences, because people rally against those who are perceived as different.

Whoever builds for themselves an image of flawlessness, power, wealth, beauty and conformity (whether based in some grain of reality or completely faked) is loved by everybody, put on a pedestal and imposed as an example of how everybody is supposed to be, even though their qualities are inflated or even invented.

The result is that everywhere you look there's a crust of fake happiness, fake health and shallow good looks, the everyday problems, pain and loss being hidden from view just underneath the surface; it's a lie:
These are the lies, the lies that you wanted
Say with a straight face, blink and you bought it
Pretend not to notice, that's my kind of stupid

Most of the people who don't meet the standard, partly or at all, pretend all the time in order to get acceptance from others and through making extra efforts to keep the appearances they cripple themselves even further than the level of ill that had prevented them from meeting the social standard in the first place:
And follow the things, the things that you lost
Give up what you have, to get what you want

The pretense is a cage that perpetuates itself by the unwillingness of the trapped to admit to being weak, ugly, flawed and mortal (human, not gods as we all like to believe we are). And any moment of clarity is very disturbing for those who believe in the fake image everybody upholds:
Free makes you nervous
It must feel like you're almost human

As for the people who don't fit and choose not to pretend, they are attacked by both the people who fit and by those who don't fit but are willing and able to fake it, because they remind everybody of the existence of pain, helplessness, ugliness, mortality etc.

The song is from the perspective of such a person who doesn't want to (or simply can't) fake it any more. The chorus is what the narrator tells herself, having internalised others' hatred and disgust:
You're not cut out for this
You've got that lemon scent
(You're too ugly and damaged to be accepted)

Fuck your instincts
Everything you do is for somebody else
(You do try to give in to others' demands in order to be loved)

You're my breakdown
Your skin like leprosy
I just don't fade well
(but you're just too ugly, damaged and self aware to ever succeed at being accepted, at playing this masquerade)

Then the aggression of the others who pick her apart and say hurtful things:
This is the part where it gets kind of personal
Say what you mean, does it make you uncomfortable?
Take it to heart and describe it in detail

And the narrator's rebellion against them and against the role they're trying to impose on her:
Your lies will never sell

It's similar to "Everybody's fool" by Evanescence, at least the interpretation the music video is implying: the narrator struggling with herself because of having faked her life to please others/gain fame.

Atmosphere – Always Coming Back Home To You Lyrics 5 years ago
You guys make it too difficult. lol.

A character Slug refers to as "Lucy", who has been purported to symbolize a range of different entities, is the most notable of these allegories. In earlier Atmosphere songs, it is believed that Slug used Lucy as a means of writing about ex-girlfriends. Lucy became so prominent that Atmosphere's 2001 album bore her name, Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs, with the record itself concentrating fairly heavily on women and relationships, in songs such as "Don't Ever Fucking Question That" and "Mama Had A Baby And His Head Popped Off". Slug himself has since said of Lucy that he originally believed "her" to be a representation of the dichotomy between himself and women. He acknowledges now that Lucy became a demonization ("Lucy Ford" being a play on words for Lucifer) of himself and his dependency on alcohol, drugs, sex and validation.[6]

I Googled this shit even to figure out if maybe he had a dead parent or something at the "home". But, it's just a bitch.

Yes, I thought it was weird becuase Ben is basically an athiest.

And Monday morning even furthers the argument as that's when the world was created according to the Bible.

What that reason may be, though, i have no idea

You moved me to tears with your description of Holocene. I could never find the right words to describe what this song means to me, but you nailed it right on the head.

"Each of these "moments" in his life are times when he seemed happy or perhaps, grounded"
This song makes me feel grounded, that's it exactly. I have often looked around at this world and just felt absolute awe for its beauty, and what it has to offer us. It makes me feel important, and yet utterly insignificant at the same time.

This song is on my morning-of playlist for my wedding day next October. I can't wait to experience it for such a monumental day of my life.

A women's perspective on this song.

This man is desperate to either sleep with this women because the sex is amazing or he loves her deeply and will put up with her lies one more time. I have been in this situation myself. I was willing to be with a man that lied to me because I loved him and the sex was great. After analyzing the situation, I realized I was suffering too much to continue to fool myself that things would change. Lying and Cheating harms a relationship. I applaud Lynyrd Skynard for creating this timeless song. I loved the first time I heard it in the 70's and I love it today.

Bon Iver – Beth/Rest Lyrics 5 years ago
listener420 obviously spent a lot of time and effort to understand this song. Pretty cool. But I have a different interpretation of this song. Following the lyrics roughly, here's how it translates in my mind:

It's not her who is errant. It's him. She's pulling him back by just a thin rope. She's extending olive branches, peace offerings, prying his stubbornness open with her love. He knows she tends to do that and he secretly counts on it. He won't reveal this because he knows his behavior is childish. He admitted this once in passing but she didn't hear him right. Instead of repeating, he redirected the conversation towards some mundane things.

He understands their home is their nest. It is built on a solid foundation, it's safe (keeper's keep) because it's hard to get to, hard to penetrate (steep). It allows to recover from the daily grind. They leave outside worries and noise to the outside world.

He sees they grew up in time and found their love and affection again. He knows she loves him, he knows that love is their foundation. He doesn't mention it but he doesn't have to: she can see he depends on it. She can see his dedication: they are married.

He doesn't want to stumble aimlessly in the dark anymore. He wants purpose and direction. He's serious. He's not promising, he is actually declaring his intent. Their love is protected by this intent from ever freezing. "Heavy-mitted". He is serious about making it work. That love is bright and dependable. They can navigate life with it. There's always danger but they trust that it's going to be there indefinitely. It's their foundation. So far, so good.

A Wilhelm Scream – Sassaquin Lyrics 5 years ago
song about drug abuse/addiction

first verse - drugs offer everything you ever wanted, - You wanted everything, you got it, you got it. thread the needle - self explanatory. surrender was days away - addiction. sassaquin - a drug rehab? time going at a snails pace - from the pov of the friend.

back from hell, crack in the bell - = not high anymore, everyone else suffers hell from the withdrawal. the bell is a UK parliament bell rung when votes are due on devisive matters, ie an ultimatum of sorts (if you miss the bell, you can't vote)

take times/be patient. obvious - recovery takes time.
pulling legs off of spiders - be patient, he's doing something worthwhile ( ie pulling the legs off of spiders rather than drugs - google the spider thing) but it takes time

staying off of it, honest to god it. pretty simple, swears to god no more drugs

'thought i was blinded, did nothing about it' perhaps the user thought the singer was blind to the use, or maybe the singer shut his eyes to it in pretence of it not happening, thus did nothing about it.

It's always you just got out
Your life's struggle but I can't shut my mouth - always a reason to use, always no matter what it is. can't shut my mouth - saying yea, there's a reason, so what, i can't sit back and watch, i have to say somehting.

If this town's your highness, this time let it be me
Asking for the bullet between the king's eyes - the town being the drug. the singer saying you know what, if you choose this then i can't help, i'm done, let me die cos i;m sick of it.

Then you got back from hell and brought us back with you
Every move is suspect, another crack in the division bell
Saying "These things take time, you need to be patient"
As I'm pulling the legs off of spiders
You see me talking, but it's just sentences
I put to the death my own advice

- recovered again, only to remind everyone about the shit. every move suspect, another crack - again, another decision to be made, are they really clean?

pulling legs - again, trying to do somehting 'useful' other than drugs. 'talking but just sentences' he's noone without drugs. he damns his advice of being clean.

Always blaming someone, don't blame me
I blame myself (for nothing)
I see so much of myself in you

could be the user or the singer talking here, probaly a mix of both, back and forth

all this needs to be taken in context and understood with metphors, as the song is written. some parts are blindingly obvious who's talking, others not so. my opinion has not picked a person for each line, as should be obvious, it has double meanings throughout.

cannot believe this album has so few comments re: interprets.

get adding people, amazing album

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Road Trippin' Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is about travelling down the pacific coast with friends but I feel its because they want to get away from where they were.

My favourite lyric is "a mirror for the sun" which to me means the car mirror and its not there for looking back at where they came from in, its for just seeing the sun and its beauty.

I think the "These smiling eyes are just a mirror for" means a lot of peoples eyes don't really show all the struggles of the past thats behind them.

Sick song none the less!!!

I find these two lines surprising and frankly borderline disturbing:

"Sometimes I think she must get off on

How is it surprising that someone cares about her partners sexual feelings and not just their own? Do the writers seriously believe that this is an unusual motivation that can't be taken at face value? Is this meant to be ironic? Is it just rhyme without reason? Am I missing something?

Audioslave – Like a Stone Lyrics 5 years ago
The song Like a Stone is about the feeling of depression.

In the first verse, Cornell is so depressed, he turns to the bible for help, even thou he doesn't believe in it. He talks about his interpretations of the book or how it might help him get to the place he wants to be, where he wouldn't feel depressed.

In the second verse, he talks about how he would pray to anyone or in other words do anything to be able to feel as happy as he has been in that particular moment in the past or it may be just an imagination of his. It is probably connected to a specific person too.

In the final verse, he tries to explain further what depression feels like. It's not what he's done or hasn't done. It doesn't matter if it was good or bad, there's no way out.
