The Decemberists – Summersong Lyrics 17 years ago
Sorry, finishing up. If he's a dead sailor beneath the waves, then the girl coming to the beach would be like her visiting him.

I think the character singing (not the girl) is dead, possibly one of the sailors "slipping to sleep". I imagine that he gets excited by summer because that's when his girl comes to the beach and lounges, "the bend of her hand" (or her wrist) digging into the sand evokes an image of her seated on the beach, leaning back and resting her weight on her hands. This seems the right mix of whimsy and tragedy for the Decemberists.

The Decemberists – A Cautionary Song Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is much more tongue-in-cheek than a lot of people seem to think. I see it much more as an elaborate lie told by maybe a nanny or a grandmother or something to get a young child to appreciate the food they're given better. I think the more graphic the more effective it would be in this case, and this song is graphic to the point that it's over-the-top. It's obviously being told to a child (who else would be so upset about their mother telling them to eat collard greens). It's more than likely false due to the fact that she only does it when everyone's sleeping and she's told not to tell anyone she knows what she does (stipulations which would silence questions about why she hadn't mentioned any of this before). I personally love the song.

The Shins – Girl Inform Me Lyrics 21 years ago
Yeah, this song's about infatuation, a crush, wanting someone to just give you a chance. The "'cause you know as soon as breath we scrutinize" line however I don't believe is about actually scrutinizing breath, especially since he adds "the paint away" the second time. I think he means we, as humans scrutinize as as much as we breathe. It's natural for us to judge people. Scrutinize the paint away, the superficial masks we put over ourselves. I really like this song... a lot.

Andrew W.K. – Party Hard Lyrics 21 years ago
I like this song, and I don't care if you do or don't, but I've noticed something. A lot of the arguments on this song have centered around the idea that this song is an "escape" from life and its tragedies, but that's not what it is at all. Andrew WKs music isn't about escaping life. Life is something to experience, not escape; if you want to escape life, you have a pretty easy way out (numerous and inventive ones in fact). I'll agree that most of his songs sound very similar, and the music is pretty superficial and repetitive, but the meaning is quite clear if you care to listen. It's not this angst that Staind and Puddle Of Mudd and nigh on every other popular rock band are putting out. I mean, that has its place too, but we don't need near so many people preaching it. It's not the self-pity and fear of life that emo seems to evoke. It's the exact opposite. It's about getting over your damn problems, living your life without regret, and not fucking sweating the small stuff. Maybe he doesn't articulate his message to your liking, but that's what makes it great. ANYONE can get the meaning out of his music, regardless of how intelligent they are. He speaks simply, keeps it brief and catchy, like a jingle or a slogan. What better way to make it memorable?

Again, I don't care that you don't like the music, what I do care about is this sophomoric name-calling coming from both sides of this damn argument. State your opinion, and leave it at that, don't stereotype.
