What I hear is about a young boy who, while entering into sexuality, likes dressing himself up like a girl. Rainy days allow him the privacy to escape into his secret world. This parlays into actually having sex with other young boys who, although they know he is a boy, settle their minds that he looks like a pretty girl- and they get to have sex. However, they are now part of the secret club, and they too will dress up in private and think about how pretty they are. The chorus's last "Isn't she?" sounds like something a parent would say to a boy who was dressed like a girl. "Isn't she pretty in pink. Isn't SHE?". I detect a hurtful tone there. The lovers pass through in their coats because they are like secret agents. Noone remembers her name when they talk about "her". The "first" now has a set of her clothes he wears and "the jokes the same" as when Caroline turns herself round and says "this is it, that's the end of the joke". The last verse is particularly heart wrenching because it seems to be edging toward love that will be unrequited. "She waves, she buttons your shirt, the traffic (the world) is waiting outside, she hands you YOUR COAT she gives you her clothes, these cars collide". BOOM! One of the greatest songs ever written! I weep when I think of this song in this context because it speaks to the struggles of young boys. Although they don't all go to cross dressing, it is a mind blowing time when young boys start coming of age. The Furs are fantastic and WAY underrated.
The album from which this song hails is one of Bob’s best and I think history will judge it as such, for many reasons, but one is that this whole albums is about, more than anything, music itself, and Bob’s relationship to it. What a perfect theme for what could very well be his last studio album(as far as he knew at the time of making it). The man devoted his life to music, and to music he shows the greatest reverence.

The clues are all there; Songs like I Contain Multitudes, Goodbye Jimmy Reed, and Murder Most Foul are bursting with references to countless other artists. False Prophet, the song Bob maybe wishes he could have written in the 60s when people were anointing him the voice of a generation when all he wanted to be was a “song and dance man”. My Own Version of you could be a coded recipe on his approach to songwriting and the way he is constantly reimagining his own repertoire. Mother of Muses…well hopefully you get the idea.
Which brings us to this masterpiece. Who has Bob made up his mind to give himself to? At first you think, this is the kind of sappy refrain you’d hear in a classic love song. But quickly, the veneer of nostolgia gives way to a deeper truth. Bob has given himself up to Music, more than people, more than religion.

Yo I just want to say. What a mad song. Beautiful vibes led by the electro track, the vocals dance on top of the bumps in a nice display of how to dance in darkness

To me, the song means, I realised that all I needed was the love inside my heart, that a best friend of mine helped me realise. That love. Relationships and eventually break ups are a powerful catalyst for self discovery for anyone that feels their feelings and listens to them, acknowledges them, doesn't bury their feelings underneath layers of hedonism.

Any one going through a breakup, shoutout to you guys, Im there with you, in the emotional trenches. We must realise that to reunite with our one, we must become the one that we want to serve to our female/male version of ourselves, as you and your soulmate are the same soul, split into 2 through human order. Only in our male female partnerships can we truly reach wholeness. Wholeness in our soul,
This is our most powerful amplification of our energy. Of course your greatest energy comes from being as authentic and as weird as you truly are. Mad love to anyone reading this comment, shoutouts to you
I think this song is about dealing with a mental illness. Your brain is raging with crazy thoughts and anger. To slow it down "you push your fingers into your eyes" to calm down your headache. You feel a pain that nobody can understand, and you feel like if you can't get out from under this crushing mental illness, you are not going to make it...i.e. you are probably going to kill yourself cause this is no way to live. "All I've got is insane" is what the subject thinks of his life. Everything...

It is an emotional cry of rage and hopelessness........I feel this song
I think Butler said this is about a gay dance club. "A fashion with a gun, my love" is a crazy cool line in that context. "In a room without a door" could mean they don't have to close the door and hide within this place. All else seems to point to the club as being underground and hiding from the public eye. "love my way" makes sense in that context as well. I ain't gay, but you gotta love Butler! That man can write a lyric.
