If you do some reading on taste and cultural politics this song is perfectly alligned with the criticisms theorists such as Adorno and Regev have posed. If interested, read Adorno's "On Popular Music" or Regev's "Producing artistic value." A lot going on in this song, but most striking is “Try not to judge me on my kind of taste. And don't go changing clothes when they don't like yours.” Both theorists touch upon the idea of avant-garde vs. commercial successes and succumbing to mass media. This quote basically says, here is the music we create, you should go ahead and do what you want to do. We won't be changing anything here to meet societal norms. Basically, don't change your colours even when people discourage you/want you to conform to the "norm." |
