| Ironically its exactly what you do when you try and pin-down the meaning of a song, stripping it of its mystery is a pretty dull and meaningless excercise. | |

My take on the lyrics: Two thoughtful people aware of the shallowness that comes out of society/art/culture. One of them gets really caught up in reflection and eargerly seeks meaning, trying to stay far ahead of everyone and reach some higher level or nugget of truth... when this person does find these truth's they don't express them because they don't think 'The others' would understand it, the other person who is the singer is aware of these truth's too but is fed up with spending time analysing and trying to find perfect meanings.. he asks other person to make his way...'down the path of reflection'. His prediction is that at the end of the path 'We all fall through'. All this searching is a waste of time for the main singer, he wants to enjoy life while its happening knowing that the world is essentially groundless. Heidegger believed that all humans are in fact dimly (perhaps sub-conciously) aware of the worlds groundlessness. For reference to this sort of thought: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/phenomenology/ Allusions to this type of thought are found in alot of lyrics at the moment, just one off the top of my head, Neon Indian: 'I don't know if you know' This line in particular: ' Everything comes apart if you find the strand, All it takes is a hand' So if you imagined a cloth or tapestry, the character in the grizzly bear song 'makes his way' pulling apart the threads, he finds the single strands, pulls them apart and falls through 'slip' nothing there, because 'We all fall through.' |
