The song is basically about how the people and country around you change a lot as time goes by. Every new generation it changes for the worst, and peop,le start using drugs to make life beautiful again. (explanation)- “Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young In a world of magnets and miracles Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary The ringing of the division bell had begin Along the long road and on down the causeway Do they still meet there by the cut?”- The place they lived when they were young was beautiful. There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps Running before time took our dreams away Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground To a life consumed by slow decay- a new generation was born(the ragged band) and they tried to be like the previous gen. but they didn’t succeed and only got worse. The grass was greener The light was brighter With friends surrounded The nights of wonder Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side- the place they lived is now destroyed (BEACAUSE)- Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again- this new generation of people (the ragged band) take steps forward in advancing civilization but the generation is so lazy they just “sleepwalk” back again and no advancements are made Dragged by the force of some inner tide-they cant help their laziness (its like theyre controlled by some sort of tide in them) At a higher altitude with flag unfurled We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed-of world- people now use drugs to recreate the place they grew up in and the only way to experience it in your mind is through being high on drugs Encumbered forever by desire and ambition There's a hunger still unsatisfied- they (the new gen.) achieve all they want in life but they always want more, theyre greedier Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon Though down this road we've been so many time- they’ve seen it all before, it’s no news to them The grass was greener The light was brighter The taste was sweeter The nights of wonder With friends surrounded The dawn mist glowing The water flowing The endless river Forever and ever - the thoughts of this dreamland (describing it beautifully) and of course the title "high hopes" says that teh y have high hopes for the furutre and that it will be a better place |
