I’m glad this song was written so simply. It leaves the door open to more than one interpretation. I don’t even mind if I’m wrong, but this song has always been about Prison to me. It just seems to have this sarcastic approach to an imaginary escape or delusion a convict has to have. Please hear me out or even better.. Read the lyrics with that approach. Here are a few examples. On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night I picture one of those correctional facility trucks rolling into a remote location where the prison resides. There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell' Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say... Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year, you can find it here The sarcasm seems to be almost like an Opposites Game throughout this song no matter what your interpretation is. “She” is most likely a Male Prison Guard. The mission Bell could be a metaphor for the Prison Bell. Lit up a candle could be referring to the on and off functions of the Prison Bars Or Opening up a corridor. While walking into a prison, we all heard the stories of what a New Guy experiences.. Cat Calls, Whistles “Such a lovely face”. Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes-Benz She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget So I called up the Captain, 'Please bring me my wine' He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here Since nineteen sixty nine' And still those voices are calling from far away, Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say... She again, The prison Guard who most likely drives a modest car. Pretty Pretty Boys at first I thought were prisoners, but I now strongly feel it’s fellow Prison Guards. Dance in the courtyard to me is referring to Playing in the courtyard. Some prisoners Play sports to remember, some to escape. Called up the captain line is perfect for the cafeteria humor. Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast The stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast Mirrors on the ceiling. No questioning that. The rest to me is not so clear. I can see a few interpretations here. Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before 'Relax,' said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave! Obviously admitting he was delusional for some period of time. He even tried to get out. But when it comes to prison You can checkout any time you like (Die), but you can never leave! If your still reading this.. Your awesome and have a lot of patience. HA HA |
