First just while listening i assumed that this song was about a manipulator in a relationship. "i love myself better than you" - a narcissist. they dont care about you. only about themselves "the finest day that i ever had / was when i learned to cry on command." - cry for attention, cry to emotionally manipulate, bla bla bla... "my mother died every night" - first pictured this line as just lying to guilt the other person when they've run out of ways to blame them

and i with that interpretation, i always pictured this song written by the victim in the relationship from the perspective of the emotional abuser. honestly dont ask me i dont know 💀
but i do know that artists like Nirvana are very opened to songs having multiple interpretations, and i like these other interpretations, i swear these songs have obvious general meanings that i just dont understand until i go onto this website 💀
Says Simone Simons of the track - Aeterna takes the point of view of a star about to go supernova to explore how everything in the universe is interconnected, like a cosmic web made from stardust. It deals our deep emotions, consciousness and other mysteries of life that science still can’t fully explain. Essentially it’s a reflection on our place in the vast universe and the connections that bind us together, as we’re all, to quote Carl Sagan, “made of starstuff."

The failing ability to understand something is combined with a short retelling of the bibles verses about Jesus coming to Earth, being born, spreading his word and being killed for it.

The humans had no Understanding for his word, and their shortsighted nature is compared to trying to look over a mountain.

This song satirises Christianity. Previously the singer did “dreadful things” like go places and pull faces; not really bad like beating women or shaking babies, but got branded as thoroughly evil nevertheless. But after converting to Christianity, he isn’t bad anymore because he does “good things” like shine his shoes and comb his hair.

Great comments from everyone - I love this site! I'll just add that that the "drug" the Baby is licking her lips and biting her nails about is....the quick fix of media. Even in 1993, the world was offering all kinds of mental overload, be it 500 channels of cable at that time, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, and Bosnian conflicts broadcast live on TV, the siege in Waco, pay-per-view porn, heroin "chic", paranoia about the upcoming millenium, and on and on....and this was at the dawn of the internet. U2 was certainly sensing the upheaval- Daddy, or as some of you mentioned, the devil, may certainly be a "dealer" who's saturating all of us with so many options that we were getting entertained, angered, etc on the constant.....and losing our way. Too much sensory input....numbness to follow. And here we are 30 years on.....with even more options to distract us: social media addictions, gambling on our phones, biased news networks. But Daddy will always be there to provide more....and more.~ "As much as you can take"....And maybe the crashed car is a metaphor for our inability to discern what is and isn't good for ourselves. How much is too much?
Nick's music always speaks directly to my spirit, intuitively and ineffably. I'm also a gentle, sensitive man who was made to love magic and has battled depression all his life.

This song is about youth, age and experience, and how they change one's perspective over time. It also seems to have touches of a gentle love song, but it is a love of an unrequited and wistful nature that he knows is never going to happen. Here Nick is feeling old and tired, and at just 23 years old. Weary of a world that is far harsher than it has any right to be.
We didn't deserve Nick Drake, but I'm very glad we had him.
