The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:

Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. For me, this song is about letting someone go. When you really care about someone and you love them enough you want to put their dreams ahead of your own selfishness. When you love someone enough you will realize what they want and let them go.

I think this song can have many different meanings, but the one that hits home the most for me is that sometimes what you think is best isn't best. God will choose your path and it is your job to be there and support the dreams that He has for you.
this song came as an inspiration to me and my best friend when she moved. when i listen to it i am inspired to be there for my friend when she needs it, now that she's gone living her life i know that i won't be a big priority but who cares as long as she knows that i'm there if she needs me.

This song, to me, talks about the relation that parents have with their children. They want their children to do well and to know that they are always loved. This is a great song. One of the parts that hits home is when they sing, “My greatest fear will be that you will crash and burn and I won't feel your fire.” …Meaning, as a parent you are scared that when you child most needs you, you will be unable to be there.

My best friend (and former boyfriend) left for his life long dream of being in the Air Force and i had a really hard time with it. Then I heard this song and i was in tears because it really shows everything i was feeling. I am so proud of him, and miss him so much. But he calls me every weekend, and he knows that he always has me back home when things get tough. It was hard to watch him go, but I know that this is his dream and he is loving every minute of it. and he knows that I am always with him every time he goes up in the air!
