This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
We move like cagey tigers
We couldn't get closer than this
The way we walk
The way we talk
The way we stalk
The way we kiss
We slip through the streets
While everyone sleeps
Getting bigger and sleeker
And wider and brighter
We bite and scratch and scream all night
Let's go and throw
All the songs we know
Into the sea
You and me
All these years and no one heard
I'll show you in spring
It's a treacherous thing
We missed you hissed the lovecats
We missed you hissed the lovecats
We're so wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully
Wonderfully pretty!
Oh you know that I'd do anything for you
We should have each other to tea huh?
We should have each other with cream
Then curl up by the fire
And sleep for awhile
It's the grooviest thing
It's the perfect dream
Into the sea
You and me
All these years and no one heard
I'll show you in spring
It's a treacherous thing
We missed you hissed the lovecats
We missed you hissed the lovecats
We missed you hissed the lovecats
We missed you hissed the lovecats
We're so wonderfully wonderfully wonderfully
Wonderfully pretty!
You know that I'd do anything for you
We should have each other to dinner
We should have each other with cream
Then curl up in the fire
Get up for awhile
It's the grooviest thing
It's the perfect dream
Hand in hand
Is the only way to land
And always the right way round
Not broken in pieces
Like hated little meeces
How could we miss
Someone as dumb as this?
I love you, let's go
Oh, solid gone
How could we miss
Someone as dumb as this?
We couldn't get closer than this
The way we walk
The way we talk
The way we stalk
The way we kiss
We slip through the streets
While everyone sleeps
Getting bigger and sleeker

We bite and scratch and scream all night

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
Just A Little Lovin'

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
According to some very realiabe souces (one of them being Robert himself)- He wrote the words when he was on LSD. They filmed the video after having some drinks. The song is about a suicide pact between two lovers. "into the sea, you and me" means they are going to drown themselves together and "all the years and no one heard" means, obviously, no one will hear from them again since they are dead. "How could we miss someone as dumb as this?" is thier friends talking, wondering why they should even bother missing the two lovers since they were stupid enough to kill themselves. Alright, that last one was a guess, but it seems to fit right?? And yeh, i totally get what you guys mean, its the most danceable song ever
@ZombieCultHero I like your interpretation, although I interpreted it differently. Lack of consistent punctuation can create ambiguities as to where a sentence ends, what a subordinate clause is referring to, etc. I thought it was meant as<br /> <br /> "Let's go and throw all the songs we know into the sea, you and me."<br /> <br /> rather than:<br /> <br /> "Let's go and throw all the songs we know.<br /> <br /> Into the sea, you and me..."<br /> <br /> Either way, it would be neither the first time nor the last that The Cure would do a song that had a cheerful, highly danceable (as you put it) tune combined with lyrics that are at the other end of the emotional spectrum — sad/negative/cynical/etc. "Let's Go to Bed," from around the same period as this one, was a classic example, but there are also much later ones like "Cut Here," with very sad, regret-heavy lyrics to a bouncy tune.<br /> <br /> I like the idea of lyrics written while tripping. Some people I've known are definitely more creative (or maybe they're just better at accessing that part of themselves) when they take acid or shrooms.<br /> <br /> A random thought...I have often wondered just how "sss" sounds got to be associated with hissing. A real hiss (whether from a cat or a snake or whatever) is just a loud unvoiced exhale, an "h" sound, no sibilant (s) whatsoever. But I love Robert's version anyway. :)
This song contains some of Robert Smith's greatest ever meows. Most Cure covers fail because no-one meows quite like Smith.
panapapapapa Its about being in love... not sure of this part: a...hm..prohibited love...
Well, the suicide pact things makes a lot more sense, but i read somewhere that this song was written about Robert being annoyed that everyone was saying that the Cure were really dark and gothy, so he wrote this as a kind of ironic joke. Which explains the 'lets go and throw all the songs we know... into the sea'. But i think that's a bit silly really. This song is lovely and makes me wanna dance dance dance!
ahhh....this song is so cool. it makes me want to do something retarded.
@WangNChung well nothing could be more retarded than the clip for the song...
"Let's go and throw All the songs we know...
Into the sea You and me All these years and no one heard I'll show you in spring It's a treacherous thing 'We missed you,' hissed the lovecats"
This set of lyrics would, at first glance at least, lead me to believe that it's reference to The Cure's deviation from their normal song style, and that the "Lovecats" might be those that write all the trendy love songs that become hits.
"'We missed you,' hissed the lovecats" might be a reference to other musicians giving praise or a welcoming back to a more mainstream type of song.
"All these years and no one heard" might be a reference to how long it had been since this band created a song of this nature.
There's really nothing here to indicate anything about actual cats. In fact, the lyrics specifically mention the love cats aging, returning to something, being greeted by other cats, and a few other items that directly contradict that idea.
It's also clearly not about a suicide pact - for those very same reasons.
@Alastor I always thought the 'Lovecats' was an oblique reference to the Hippies of the 1960s who were, in their own parlance, 'Love cats', maaaan
isnt it "so wonderfully, wonderfully, wonderfully pretty!". Anyway, apparently this song was written because Rob got sick of them being called a goth band, it was a big hit for them and when they got that sucess, well you probably know the lovecats has always stuck with them and i think they sort of resent this. Maybe this is why end from the album wish brings in words like "please stop loving me, i am none of these things"
yup, its "wonderfully............." You have to say that compared to a lot of the Cures stuff this song is far more accesable and catchy, so fleaaaaaa.s comment is most definatly right
its kinda like saying .. well we can do this and we do do this but yet we can do that .. oh what? you like that? hmm well we prefer to do this .. "lets go and throw all the songs we know"
what i like though is that even in a fun jingle he can still write good lyrics
great
