It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again

When it comes, it comes abrupt
And it feels, it feels like trading brains with an imbecile, for real
Yes, I feel emphatic about not being static
And not buying philosophies that are sold to me at a steal

Just when you thought it was safe to think
In comes mental piracy
I know what I'm looking for cannot be sold to me
I wish they all would stop trying
'Cause what I want (what I want)
And what I need (and what I need)
Is and will always will be free, now

It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again
It's coming around again
They're letting it out again

When it comes, it comes unannounced
And it feels like a matador is taunting me
With his reddest red cloth and I am the bull
Yes I feel emphatic about not being static
And not eating the bullshit that's being fed to me no more
'Cause now I'm full

Just when you thought it was safe to think
In comes mental piracy
I know what I'm looking for cannot be sold to me
I wish they all would stop trying
'Cause what I want (what I want)
And what I need (and what I need)
Is and will always will be free, now

It's coming around again
They're letting it out again, again

This song is about not believing whatever is being told to you and challenging what everyone has been taught. People may try to cover things up but what he is looking for will always be free.

This song isn't about drugs. It's about noncomformity, a lot of incubus songs are about noncomformity. Many people that do drugs tend to think all songs are about drugs haha. Think about the metaphors he uses. "And it feels like a matador is taunting me with his reddest red cloth and I am the bull"... The bull is powerless to resist the red cloth, and the matador has complete control over the bull, the bull is his puppet. Much like how television has complete control over our minds. Tells us what to do, how to be, what to buy. Incubus is trying to explain that we are all sheep to this societal conformity. That the real important things in life are not found on television, magazines, and department stores. In their album Science, they have a song called "Idiot Box". All about how television is like a religion, even uses a metaphor of comparring TV to God. Most of us are powerless against the power of comformity, because we all have the basic need to feel a sense of belonging. That usually means doing what's expected of you, and TV and media is our "bible" telling us how to do that. I feel Incubus is expressing frustration and resistance to that "sheep" like behavior. To understand Incubus, I think you have to have similar feelings about things as he expresses in his songs. I have, and that is what drew me to their music.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

anti-conformity is just doing the opposite of everyone else without thinking about it and is just as mindless as conformity. nonconformity is the word you are looking for but i think it should be aconformity, just like moral, immoral, then amoral.

    With that being said...

I saw something on TV that blamed Barack Obama and Barack Obama alone for rising gas prices. I then realized exactly what mental piracy was.

It seems to be about freedom... from the world, and the freedom to think for yourself (mental piracy is a violation of this right.)

i love the way this song is written.. 2 many ppl dont' realize that they r being sucked into being someone that truly isn't them.. ppl r 2 fake and superficial.. they think that everything can be bought.. and that everything should be taken at face value.. isn't honesty and personal freedom worth ne thing these days.. we're being taught 2 value things that r completely unrealistic.. when will the world wake up and realize what is really happening 2 them.... bravo 2 incubus 4 bringing it 2 our attention.. someone has 2..

i think this is about finding your own philosiphy and not belive everything your told and even though something may be tempting and some people my try to incite some type of anger or sense of revenge in you its better to wait for the right moment to make your move and that you controll what you do and what you belive not them incubus kicks ass

One of my fav's. My thought is its about not letting marketing & propaganda make choices for you. Its about making your own choices and how all the ads & influences of modern-day culture can really affect your decision-making. Its about finding what you really need.

You have to be smart to see through it all and be able to decide for yourself what is right in any given situation. IMHO.

Say what you will about Brandon Boyd, he def gets a bad rap... He's def an intelligent dude. Good stuff.

To me, this song is about scientology and other religions where lame ass philosophies are sold to people (ie "what i want and what i need is and will always be free").

Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
