This song was played at the funeral of someone who was, ironically, very close to me. He always made a big effort to relate to me although in my mind we always seemed quite distant. I never realized how much he meant to me until after his death.

This song is a guy who's in a long distance relationship and he hates just calling her every night and rarely getting the chance to see her. Very depressing.
It amazes me that just one person has left a comment on this song which is probably my all time favourite dire straits song. It relates a lot to my long distance relationship and I once dedicated this song to my girlfriend living in a different continent by leaving a message in the website of a local radio station there. and yes, they did play this song and she heard it too:)
Not sure it's that simple: "See you've been in the sun and I've been in the rain" But the lyrics are often just a bed for Mark to play over. Great song, but the lyrics are hardly Fool in the Rain.

yeah thats pretty weird that 'brothers in arms' has way more comments than this song, not saying that this is a better song but, considering that every other band on this site ive checked out, their popular songs get way more hits than the not-so-popular ones.
I think it's about him being on tour with the band ("mean old town" is NYC in the mid-80s) and missing his loved one.
