The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I can fly
But I want his wings
I can shine even in the darkness
But I crave the light that he brings
Revel in the songs that he sings
My angel Gabriel
I can love
But I need his heart
I am strong even on my own
But from him I never want to part
He's been there since the very start
My angel Gabriel
My angel Gabriel
Bless the day he came to be
Angel's wings carried him to me
Heavenly
I can fly
But I want his wings
I can shine even in the darkness
But I crave the light that he brings
Revel in the songs that he sings
My angel Gabriel
My angel Gabriel
My angel Gabriel
But I want his wings
I can shine even in the darkness
But I crave the light that he brings
Revel in the songs that he sings
My angel Gabriel
I can love
But I need his heart
I am strong even on my own
But from him I never want to part
He's been there since the very start
My angel Gabriel
My angel Gabriel
Bless the day he came to be
Angel's wings carried him to me
Heavenly
I can fly
But I want his wings
I can shine even in the darkness
But I crave the light that he brings
Revel in the songs that he sings

The Night We Met

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
This song is so hauntingly sad for some reason...I really love it. Her voice is from Heaven.
God, this song is so brilliant. When she says "wings" and it echoes, it sends shivers down my spine and I feel all goosebump-y wonderful. XD
So, what I think this song is about is the speaker (not necessarily the lady singing, god forgive me that I don't know her name) has found the one she feels that she's destined to be with, this "Gabriel" fella, but she's a strong woman and she doesn't want to change her lifestyle. She knows that she can make it without him even though she wants to be with him, thus the "I am strong even on my own / But from him I never want to part ". She's torn between giving in to what she really wants, a life with him, and the comfort of the life she's lived because she knows she'll be fine by herself. She also knows though, that being with him will give her something she's never had before, "I can love / But I need his heart ". So, I think it's ultimately about the speaker lady struggling to deny the love she feels for this man and failing in the end. After all, how could you deny your love for an angel?
^_^ And that's my little bit...
I concur with everygeek . she has quite a few songs that pertain to her child, pregnancy and miscariage. I beleive that the theme of this song is "unconditional love" the kind a mother has for her child. She is an adult that can shine, fly, love, stand without him, a parent is not suppose to be dependent on a child, it's the other way around. But still she craves to be with him, to hear his babbles, cries and songs...She is already complete but she loves and needs him by her side. I just had a baby and for me it was like falling in love with an angel God sent just for me, so I can see how this interpretation would fit.
@quaosqueen read this today, twelve years after you made the comment and i'm crying. whether it's what she meant or not, your words are so true. Love to you and your child and hope you both are doing well 12 years on.
As far as i'm aware the song was written by lou rhodes about her newly born son ( pregnant when recording the "What Sound" album )
Such a beautiful track and so universal - Its a pure love song at its most simple - Stunning track
I think this song is about being in denial about something that happened to you, and trying to get over it, by convincing yourself that you are better than you think you are. (I also think it is truly about the angel Gabriel)
I wrote the definity meaning of that song here: musicbanter.com/lyrics/Lamb-Gabriel.html
If you read it, it's that clear as posible! Amazing lyrics

Same here, this song just makes me cry over and over. I really wish I could be the Gabriel for someone, but hey... it's just a song.
