We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

This is probably one of the hardest Blur songs to decipher the meaning, but I think I have the basic premise.
Like def_linus said, it's about two friends who haven't really kept in touch with each other. Because there isn't much excitement going on (due to lack of jobs, lack of school, ect), both are too apathetic to keep human relationships because they are too busy being alone themselves. Because there is nothing to do, they seclude themselves from the rest of the world in their homes, and entertain themselves by watching tv or going on the internet and wasting time, forgetting calling each other, not because they dislike each other but because they're too lazy to call. But this boredom isn't a good thing, because even though in the beginning they like the loneliness, they eventually get depressed because of the loneliness and regret it, "Well I knew as much it's no surprise that today/I get up for round two with nothing to do/Except get a touch of flu". But even though they both know that they should call because that would be better for their social life and they wouldn't be as bored, they've gotten used to the apathy, and would rather "grin and bear it/Because it's not worth the trouble of an argument". Their friendship is of immense importance when they're around each other, but when apart they don't care for each other enough to call and keep in touch. Their relationship is that they only remain friends because they laugh at each other's jokes, "And in any case i'd rather wear it/It's like a badhead in the morning" (a badhead being the awful hair do you have when you get up, it makes you laugh but really it's not that big a deal).
So, in short, their friendship according to the narrator isn't that deep or important, and he'd rather be in complete seclusion than try to have a human relationship because that's easier than having to call and care about people. Their relationship is "Not worth the trouble of an argument". He'd rather wear/bear the boredom of being alone than remain friends with someone who doesn't interest them immensly.
I personally can really relate to this song, especially during winter break now, because I haven't called anybody. Like most Blur songs, it's very sad and observational.
I used to think this song was about being unemployed and your parents giving you a hard time. probably not the true meaning.

@phifedawg @iloveiguanas, I thought the same. It made me think of an unemployed friend who had his days like that: getting up around two from a lack of owt to do. The music has the forlorn and futile tone to it of aimless days.
Brass band beginning: I love it. That's one thing I've always loved of British music. Chumbawamba also uses brass a lot in their music.
"It" seems like the mystical part of this song... "grin and bear IT" and "I'd rather wear IT" and "IT's like a badhead in the morning." Whatever IT is, it's not worth the trouble of an arguement.
Any ideas of what IT could be?
The rest of the song seems like it could be talking about a lazy day of summer vacation, but I'm sure that's not what he's referring to.

i love this song... Behold999, i wonder what "IT" is as well. in my mind it sounds like he's talking about being forced to spend time with someone he truly dislikes. but out of formality, fear of confrontation, he just grins and bears it... just an idea though! all hail blur!

great song. i think it's just about having nothing to do everyday and having lost touch with a good friend you spend a lot of time with. and you just grim and bear it and you get cranky and it's not worth getting into an argument with anyone about your life. cause it's about nothing.

I agree with def_linus on that it's about having lost touch with a friend . Neither of the two have really stayed in touch, which you can blame on the other person or on yourself. You might start out blaming yourself, but then realize that the other person hasn't stayed in touch with you either. Or maybe you did try to keep in touch, but gave up because your attempts didn't have any effect. This could also make you feel that, eventhough you care, there's no use in arguing about it, it's just not worth the the trouble since you've already tried to make it work and didn't succeed. Besides, arguing might not even solve anything at all. So you just grin and bear it.
To me it seems that the "it" is just losing the friendship.
