(Mhm)
(Oh oh)

Live another day
Climb a little higher
Find another reason to stay
Ashes in your hands
Mercy in your eyes
If you're searching for a silent sky

You won't find it here
Look another way
You won't find it here
So die another day

The coldness of his words
The message in his silence
Face the candle to the wind
This distance in my voice
Isn't leaving you a choice
So if you're looking for a time to run away

You won't find it here
Look another way
You won't find it here
So try another day

They took pictures of our dreams
Ran to hide behind the stairs
And said, "Maybe when it's right for you, they'll fall"

But if they don't come down
Resist the need to pull them in
And throw them away
Better to save the mystery
Than surrender to the secret
Whoa oh

You won't find it here
Look another way
You won't find it here
So try another day

Well, apparently, on a Long Island radio show called "Fingers' Metal Shop", Gail Fluge, who at that time was president of the Dream Theater fan club, stated that the song was about John Petrucci's struggle in dealing with his father having cancer... His father, John Sr., passed away in 1996.

Also, two other schools of thought have previously emerged on this subject: Suicide is the most obvious meaning. Pretty much every verse supports the theme of a person trying to talk someone out of killing themselves. "so die another day... better to save the mystery." Another equally valid point of view is that of mental illness, and trying to cope with it as the sufferer and/or family. "they took pictures of our dreams..."

The song was written by Petrucci when his father was dying of Cancer. Take Away My Pain was written after his Dad had died.

That's the story of the song, fact.

Oh God this song is so beautiful. the tone of the singer's voice might be a little ...unconventional, but he can hit any note in the world! I thought this site was for song meanings, not arguments over whih DT album is the finest. This album holds up very well to the test of time, sounding only a little dated in places. I initially thought this song was about a guy trying to let a girl down easy when he dumps her, with 'dying' referring to the death of their love. However, on closer inspection this song a appears to be about a terminally ill family members wanting to commit suicide. "Ashes in your hands Mercy in your eyes If you're searching for a silent sky"

It's a heartbreaking song. I don't think its about time travel or relationships though.

I don't think the intention of the song was to illustrate suicide, but moreso a terminally ill loved one who has lost the will to live, someone who has lost the fight. The loved ones around this person are adamantly and sternly attempting to convince him (in this case, John's father) that it's not his time to go and he must be strong. Don't call death and surrender to the mystery of life, and afterlife. "Save the mystery" of what's beyond this life for "another day."

It's about John's father's struggle with cancer. The song is his son telling him not to give up and accept an imminent death, he should instead fight and work to live on.

A father figure to me killed himself and this song helped me get through it. My sister had to listen to this song at her therapy before too because she used to be suicidal. So, yeah it think it's about finding another way to live rather than suicide.

The song is about- Love and Relationship; if you were not meant for each other then you have to accept that fact and look for another!!!

You cannot force something to happened if it is not destined to happened...it's FATE at works, here..

This song is completely beautiful, the sax solo followed by the guitar solo. This is a good chance for Labrie to really stand out also, alot of times he may not sound all that great but here he's perfect.

Dream Theater will never top Images and Words, they've REALLY went down-hill with Train of Thought.

This song is brilliant. I am however unfortunatley going to have to disagree with "Muzzy".
DT have not gone down-hill with ToT, rather pushed themselves into a new dimension. Labrie even sounds pretty convincing in ToT. Petrucci and Portnoy will continue to evolve with Myung and Rudess and Labrie will stick around as long as he sounds good. All in all, Train of Thought is one of their best albums. Sucks to be you.

I'm gonna have to disagree with mung bean and muzzy here. Muzzy, they did not go down hill since ToT. But then again mung bean, DT have gone down hill with Tot, u are obviously gay and just wrong. All in all this is a nice song. I think its about time travel.

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
