Oh no
Here comes that sun again
That means another day
Without you my friend

And it hurts me
To look into the mirror at myself
And it hurts even more
To have to be with somebody else
And it's so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes, sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away

With so many people
To love in my life
Why do I worry
About one

But you put the "happy"
In my "ness"
You put the good times
Into my fun
And it's so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes, sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away
And head for the door

We've tried the goodbye
So many days
We walk in the same direction
So that we could never stray
They say if you love somebody
Than you have got to set them free
But I would rather be locked to you
Than live in this pain and misery

They say time will
Make all this go away
But it's time that has taken my tomorrows
And turned them into yesterdays
And once again that rising sun is droppin' on down
And once again you my friend are nowhere to be found
And it's so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes, sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away
And head for the door
You just walk away
Walk away
Walk away
Just walk on, walk on, turn and head for the door, just walk away.

side note: this song is amazingly beautiful. ben harper is a lyrical genius.

i think this song can be taken from a different aspect than a breakup. i once almost lost a friend, and when i found this song, i started sobbing uncontrollably because it perfectly defined every possible emotion i was going through. dead seriously, i hated looking in a mirror. and i dreaded the sun coming up every morning. and i asked myself why it mattered because i had other friends. and of course i fought myself back saying how she made me so happy.

ben harper is a genius. i swear he reads minds. this is my absolute favorite song<3

    My Interpretation

    From a guy/my perspective:

There were a few comments that said this song was for the people that got their hearts broken. However, for me I really felt it was a song for the heart-breakers. The heart-breakers that really care for their significant other, but they just have break up with them. It's a beautiful song, and I swear it could bring tears to my eyes. There is contradiction from what I'm saying when Ben Harper sings, "but i would rather be locked to you, than live in this pain and misery." I find this song very similiar to Death Cab for Cutie's - Tiny Vessels. This song gives me courage to end a relationship for both people, and they will eventually find happiness again. This is my very first comment =) and after viewing a few comments, I really admire the people on this website for avoiding negative criticisms or comments.

    My Opinion

This song is for the people who want to be with someone but cannot (already in a relationship, distant love, impossible love...) So they know that their love is shared, they feel the same, but they cannot be together because of circumstances... It's a song about impossible love... a la Romeo & Juliette....

That is my interpretation but also knowing a bit of BH's life, that would not surprise me he wrote with this meaning... It is also a song I share with a dear friend... we love each other deeply... we are soul mates... but we cannot be together... it's very hard, when you know someone loves you as much as you love them, but life/timing/fate/commitment made that this person is with someone else, and as much as they want to be with you, they just cannot... they cannot change their life.... Walk away however can be also seen as they finally decided to walk away from what they had... to be with their friend... maybe more wishful thinking here...

a perfect song for those "just be friends" break ups where the one who gets dumped can't 'just be friends'.

Best lyric in any Ben Harper song: "But you put the happy In my ness"

    IMHO

This song is a very personal song for me. Like most of you said to anyone who has ever been dumped this is a song for us. Esp. If you still have very strong feelings for this person, but she just doesnt feel the same. You just have to walk away. "so many people to love in my love why do i worry about one. but you put the happy in my ness, you put the good times in my fun" its like its crazy to still be in love with you when you arent feeling the same but we've had so many goodtimes i can't just let go like that.

This song just completely captures the pain that comes from breaking up but I also think that it kinda has some hope to it. I think he is trying to say that though it's hard, it has to be done. It's such a beautiful song with a ton of emotion. The live version is amazing. I agree with jmnifty4 that Ben Haper is god :)

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
