@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This song is about Shannon going to Hollywood for the first time with their label... to do some album shit or something. "Land of Milk and Honey", isn't that LA?
It seems it's about leaving home to move out to LA. He's saying he never really liked where he grew up, and he didn't think the people really knew him or shared the same ideas, so he left. He decided he'd move out of Indiana and move to California, where everything would be better. But he finds out that it's not better there, in fact it is worse.
He realizes that he's used to smal town life and wants to go home. But even when he's home, the same people are bugging him, only this time he is okay with it. Because he knows he is where he belongs.
It's kind of, the you don't know what you've got untill it's gone moral.

I believe I read somewhere, or heard it in an interview, that this song is about how Blind Melon's time in Los Angeles was less than enjoyable. Also that they wished to return home.
From a general viewpoint, this song is about home sickness and a longing desire to leave, in this scenario, Los Angeles. When he returns home no one understands why he wishes to say there.

The lines, "Nobody here really understand me and so I’ll wave goodbye I’m fine, I'm fine", seem to say that 'Blind Melon' has no problems with leaving there fame and fortune in Los Angeles
Indiana is an odd place (Shannon's from Dayton, Indiana) , god you despise it. Yet when you're away it seems to linger in your mind. God Bless Shannon, good guy too bad I never got to meet him.
Shannon is actually from lafayette, indiana. He was born in Dayton but he considershimself from Lafayette.
The song is about their perceptions of LA, but it is from the whole band. Shannon wrote the first verse, Rogers the second, and Brad the third.
"Tones of Home is somewhat autobiographical. Brad wrote the last verse, I wrote the middle verse, and Shannon wrote the first verse. So the song is sort of about our collective view of leaving our repressed, conservative environments and becoming more aware. My verse was about how I viewed Los Angeles when I first got here. I was so disillusioned. I assumed it was gonna be this Utopian environment with lots of great musicians playing, all wanting to do different things. There would be good music going on, and it wouldn't be hard to find other musicians with similar ideas. Obviously, you have to wade through a lot of slued to find that."
To me this song speaks about wanting to get away from wherever it is that you call home, and moving to another location that you consider to be the land of your dreams. But everywhere it's pretty much the same, there's diverse people no matter where you live you just have to find them and connect with the ones who share the same ideals. And as you get older it's harder to meet new people, where you grew up is where you met the majority of your friends so as much as you might hate home it's better than a new location because of your friends.
