"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. Alright, I don't know WHO the song is about; but "clouds in my coffee" makes me think of the swirls that you get when you pour cream into coffee. They're fleeting but cool to watch. And in response to Sarou Booboo: I think that's the entire point. The song could be about anyone, but when this person hears it, they will immediately think that it is about them.. because they are vain. It's like when you put something in your Profile.. and everyone thinks that it was for them, like lyrics or a quote, but it wasn't for any of them.
I agree totally! I see that all the time. People read into coincidences. One morning a friend posted on Facebook that she was sick of arrogant people. I commented "Coffee STAT!" then after me about 8 people commented apologizing and asked if it was about them. She was just being cranky, like I assumed, but everyone's reactions showed how much people tend to internalize other people's behavior that has nothing to do with them.

i love the fact that no one knows who the song is about, it adds to its intrigue. its giving a message out and i'm sure a number of men are wondering whether it's about them. everyone knows a man who this song applies to. carly is getting her own back on a number of men and i think this song would make them feel stupid. it makes the men feel bad for wondering whether the song is about them.

I have always loved this song, and especially the line, "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you." My interpretation is that this song is written for one person, and NOT that that person is necessarily vain, but that there is an irony here. In a sense, the singer is saying, "You think this song is about you," and the singer is trying to delude herself into thinking that the song is NOT about you, but it really is about you, so therein lies the irony. It's like a husband and a wife having a heated argument, and the wife says, "You think that I care what you think? Well, I don't!" But the emotion behind the comment proves that the person really does care and is trying to convince not just the other person but herself that she doesn't care. So it is a wonderful example of irony of speech, which is what I believe is at the heart of this song.

Whomever the song is about - if it is, indeed, about a specific person - I think the lines 'You're so vain. I bet you think this song is about you, don't you?' encapsulate a brilliant and satisfyingly provocative irony. This is because should the adressee(s) attempt a rebuttal - by claiming that even if the lyrics are not entirely about them, they are at least in part; due to the very encompassing nature of the song, which incorporates anyone who belives that Simon is referring to them - then they merely confirm how vain they are. It's like goading people into behaving arrogantly, and then taking that as testament to their true colours. I love how inflammatory that is!

I think TFFMO got it right. The song ultimately is about her and how she was used. The irony is that the vain person is only going to hear how it's about him because that's the essence of vanity-that everything revolves around "you." I still think that vain person's a single guy. If so, couldn't someone just figure out who owned a horse that raced at Saratoga or went to see an eclipse in Nova Scotia unless that's altered.
