Augusten, if I write something beautiful
Will it squash the hurt that’s living deep inside of you?
Augusten, are you just like me
Does your hurt fade as you write out your history?

I just want to know how you were able
To survive so long with the wolf at the table

Augusten, so you were hiding in the forest
With your love still laid out before him
Augusten, with that love stuck inside
How did you ever sleep at night?

I just want to know how you were able
To survive so long with the wolf at the table
Augusten, tell me how were you able
To control the urge to kill the wolf at the table?

His love, his love you spoke of
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Augusten, do you struggle for the words?
Does the right way to put it sometimes hurt?
Augusten, am I just like you?
Could I ever truly know what I would do?

I just want to know how you were able
To survive so long with the wolf at the table
Augusten, tell me how were you able
To control the urge to kill the wolf at the table?

His love, his love, his love
His love, his love, his love
His love, his love you spoke of
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

One, two, three, four
His love right out the door
One, two, three, four
His love right out the door
One, two, three, four
His love right out the door

His love, his love you spoke of
Oh, oh, oh, oh
His love, his love you spoke of
Oh, oh, oh, oh
His love, his love you spoke of
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Such a beautiful and expressive song. Liking both artists, I have to say that this synergystic mingling of creativity really excites me. More authors should do this!

I think we'd need to read the book (Wolf At The Table) to completely understand it... but I think she's just relating to Augusten, saying she's full of emotion and needs to let it out (through writing songs, i suppose)... and maybe speculating that he somehow can get through it without so much wear on the outside.

Holy shit I heard this when he came here on his book tour and was absolutely blown away. They play it right before he comes on in total darkness, and it's amazing. At the reading, he basically explained a few of the monstrous things his dad (the wolf) was doing. His dad was a sociopath and would do things to taunt and torture Augusten for his whole childhood. I haven't read the book yet, but just hearing him explain some of the things his dad did could help you understand the song better.

    SPOILER WARNING

One of the stories told how Augusten and his mother went away for a week or so, and he was told on a daily basis that his dad was taking care of his beloved guinea pig, and when he got home the guinea pig was dead and rotting in his cage.

Another told of one night when his mom wasn't home and it was just him and his dad. His dad turned off all the lights in the house and loudly sharpened all the knives in the house, with a huge grin on his face the whole time.

His dad, by the way, taught ethics and was the head of the philosophy department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

I wonder if Tegan and Sara and Augusten are good friends.

They are both so talented. Favorite author and Favorite Musicians by far.

They did this thing for Spin Magazine together with Augusten reading some excerpts from his book and Tegan playing "His Love" and some The Con songs. You can find some videos of it on youtube.

The entire time I read Wolf at the Table, this song played in the back of my head. After reading the book, I can't hear the song without getting emotional. It's really a wonderfully written albeit terrifying account of his sadistic father, and I think this song nailed it.

I'm can only assume that you (commenters) are referring to Augusten Burroughs? I read Running With Scissors awhile back and it sounds like the same guy... the lyrics make sense. Also I don't know of any other writers named Augusten. If so, that's very cool that he has a relationship with Tegan and Sara.

Also, to the last comment... I don't belive the fact that he's gay has anything to do with it, as the lyrics are about his relationship with his FATHER.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
