Needed some time
So I could find
A little strength to redefine
What I've become
What I have done
I never asked to be the one

I'm riding it out
This storm that you brought in
Bringing it down, only around
For you I go again
It's got to be easy to see
What everyone takes out of me
Knocking me down, dragging me out
How did you end up in that crowd?

Did you run away? Did you fall apart?
Do you see yourself for what you are?
Will you be looking for it anymore
When five becomes four?
When you're all alone with the melody
Do you close your eyes and think of me?
Will you still hear me singing anymore
When five becomes four?

Try and put aside
Your history and pride
Maybe for one moment in time
We'll all be on your side
The story goes, nobody knows
What it was like when you were through
Someone who cared out in the air
It went and crashed down anywhere

Did you run away? Did you fall apart?
Do you see yourself for what you are?
Will you be looking for it anymore
When five becomes four?
When you're all alone with the melody
Do you close your eyes and think of me?
Will you still hear me singing anymore
When five becomes four?

Remember the line "never say die"?
You were the reason I survived
Where did you go? I need to know
I waited here, you never showed
It's gonna be harder for me
I can't forgive so many things
When you weren't there, I was around
Why would you try and hurt me now?
Just tell me why!
Just tell me why!

(Did you run away?)
(Did you run away?)

Did you run away? Did you fall apart?
Do you see yourself for what you are?
Will you be looking for it anymore
When five becomes four?
When you are all alone with the melody
Do you close your eyes and think of me?
Will you still hear me singing anymore
When five becomes four?
When five becomes four...
When five becomes four...

Oml! This is one of THE BESTEST songs where Sean's violin chords sound AMAZING! He's soo awesome! But yes! I agree... I think the song may have to do with Ben leaving the band. Hmm... that's something un-cool about bands. I think this album is soo AWESOME. Like Ocean Avenue. But yeah... it sorta makes up for the lights and sounds album. True.

    Song Meaning

The song is about lead guitarist Ben Harper's departure from the band in 2005.

In 2005, Harper went with the other band members to Los Angeles while Key and Mosely moved to New York City to create new material for their next album. During the following months tensions arose between the band members, mostly after Harper was arrested on May 14 for suspicion of DUI. In an interview with MTV News he said that he was finished with writing the guitar tracks for the album and that he was leaving the band. He was replaced by Ryan Mendez from the band Staring Back.

This song is about Ben Harper "Needed some time so i could find A little strength to redfine What i have done what ive become i never asked to be the one" Ryan was pretty sad after Ben left, the line i never asked to be the one is because ryan was the one who told ben to leave the band even though it was a complete band decsion, ryan was the one who had to confront ban so he was looked at as the bad guy but he did do some bad things to ben. When writing lights and sounds, ryan and pete moved to new york to try to right a pure rock album and they blocked ben completely out of the writing process of lights and sounds thinking he might mess up there goal of a pure rock record. But for ryans defense, Ben was spending more time at his record company Takeover records than with yellowcard.

Five Becomes Four, as the title suggests, talks about Ben Harper. Ben was with Yellowcard when the band skyrocketed in popularity with the album "Ocean Avenue". And, like the announcement of someone's departure, it's going to take some time for the remaining members to "find a little strength to redefine".

    I think instead of:

I’m letting it out This storm that you brought in

    Its:

I'm riding it out This storm that you brought in

and instead of: It’s hard to be, easy to see What everyone takes out of me

    it's:

It's gotta be, easy to see What everyone takes out of me

    Just what I hear.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
