Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

To be honest (and most certainly not meaning to be offensive), I liked this song better before I realized that they're talking about Christ, for no reason other than the fact that I'm not religious in any way, shape, or form. Other than that, though, it's an amazing song.
I liked this song so much more before I knew the band was religious. Sorry but I like the idea of someone finding their salvation in someone real's love for them rather than in some imaginary friend.
looking at the lyrics, and the band's religion, they wrote it to mean God, if you know catholic teachings it makes sense, but then you watch the music video and it's her dad and I think that's symbolic, in the video they use the girl's dad to symbolize the "almighty father", god I was brought up catholic, I don't believe in it anymore, but this song has never gotten better or worse because of that. the message of hope and redemption is too strong to make me think any less of it because I don't believe in that religion, hope is real, love is real, and they are truly higher powers that I believe in and live by to me, love and hope wrapped their arms around her and brought on an epiphany
THIS SONG IS ASTONISHING. i cried when i heard it. because its so true... its so hard to overcome this issue. and then your left with all of the scars. but you feel better in the end. cutting is an issue yeah, a big one and no one understands, but there are people that love you and want to help you. this is like running through my life a few months ago... i listen to this song about 10 times a day..

its the best way, causes the least harm to your body, than drinking or doing drugs etc sure we know its bad, and its addictive BUT if its the only way you can cope, then why not??

As for the religion thing, I went by the music video, not that it's her father, but that he was an actual person, cause I'm a hardcore atheist. I think of my boyfriend who is helping me through this hellhole of a life I have.
This is the song I sang to myself every night in the hospital, I was there of course for self-harm and suicide though against my will. I still want to cut so badly, but then I think about my boyfriend and I play this song. It's hard. I'm almost on my second month since the last time, I just hope I don't relapse again like I had before. But I can't promise myself, because I become a danger to myself every night.

I can relate to this song. And the video was incredible. Cutting is an experiance I was saved from and hope to never repeat. (: I hate thow this band is put under the lable "emo" because of soome of the lyrics obviously they sngs are about hope.

But this is an amazing song. Very brooding, deep, with a great sense of hope. Between The Trees aren't nearly as famous as they should be.
I couldn't love this song more than i already do. I had been cutting for over a year, and no one understood me or loved me. But when i met my friend (boyfriend now) he gave me a reason to stop cutting - and a reason to want to live. He was a cutter so he understood exactly how i felt. And that's all i ever wanted. I'm putting my knives away for good this time. <3
