Forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who have trespassed against us
Give us this day our daily bread, daily bread, daily bread

In cello et in terra fiat voluntas tua
Gloria spiritui sancto

What language do you speak?
If you speak at all
Are you some kind of freak
Who lives to raise the ones who fall?

Hey, would you tell me why
The cat fights the dog?
Do you go to the mosque
Or the synagogue?

And if our fates have all been wrapped around your finger
And if you wrote the script then why the troublemakers?

How do you do? How does it feel to be so high
And are you happy? Do you ever cry?
Are you sometimes shy? (I sometimes cry)
You've made mistakes, well that's okay
'Cause we all have but if I forgive yours
Will you forgive mine?

Hey, do you feel our pain
And walk in our shoes?
Have you ever felt starved
Or is your belly always full?

How many people die
And hurt in your name?
Hey, does that make you proud
Or does it bring you shame?

And if our fates have all been wrapped around your finger
And if you wrote the script then why the troublemakers?

How do you do? How does it feel to be so high
And are you happy? Do you ever cry? (Are you sometimes shy?)
You've made mistakes, well that's okay
'Cause we all have but if I forgive yours
Will you forgive mine?

Forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who have trespassed against us (someh zoonoobe Allah)
Give us this day our daily bread (ya Allah)
Daily bread (ya Allah)
Daily bread (ya Allah)

Forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who have trespassed against us (s'lach lanu)
Give us this day our daily bread (mechilah), daily bread, daily bread
Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, Amen

How do you do? How does it feel to be so high
And are you happy? Do you ever cry? (Are you sometimes shy?)
You've made mistakes, well that's okay
'Cause we all have but if I forgive yours
Will you forgive mine? (Will you forgive mine?)

How do you do? How does it feel to be so high
And are you happy? Do you ever cry? (Are you sometimes shy?)
You've made mistakes, and that's okay
'Cause we all have but if I forgive yours
Will you forgive mine?

    My Opinion

I don't think this song necessarily implies that she is an atheist. I think believers ask these questions, too. What is important about this and about the song, I think, is that both believers and non-believers are wondering why and when our world went so wrong.

This song is most likely about Shakira having a conversation with god. She sings about all the injustice in the world, about killing in the name of god, and if all of this is justified. Pretty moving song.

One of her most impressive songs. Bold, daring, and poetic. Shakira never ceases to amaze me. Her song really make you think.

Shakira is Christian. Many theists question their faith and find that it eventualy strengthens their belief.

I think it is a beautiful song. I don't think she is giving an opinion in it. I think she is asking general questions that we have all asked ourselves before. I think in the end she is almost being critical of herself by asking for forgiveness.

I feel like this song is about the hypocrisy of religion. She speaks about how the christian god has done horrible things and yet he punishes humans for doing things that he doesn't like. He is supposedly all powerful and yet still lets people suffer and starve. It doesn't necessarily mean she's an atheist, but she seems to be against at least a certain interpretation of god, perhaps the most brutal old testament version.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
