Amputechture came, philistine praise
Bottomless pit of empty names
Incarcerated habits poured from the palms
Severing the breast, dancing on his arms

Beneath those locks of dirty red hair
A necklace of follicles with saber tooth monocles
They want a bouquet of black rose gems
Cascading kisses stalactite stems
They went and built a capsule in the cyanide pond
Where the holiest of water would have you to drown

Tomorrow we forget
'Cause now has never left
You gotta find my body
In the mechacontext

You give me a corpse, you live in it now
You're stir from a camp nourishment plows
(Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah)
You give me a corpse, you live in it now
You're stir from a camp nourishment plows
(Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah)

Please dismantle
All these phantom limbs
It's the evidence
Of humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments

Everyone stabs all the time
Persuasion deflowers your sympathy
Everybody has chosen to help
The shovels that bury me

This dirt
Is turning Christ to make repent again
So I've heard
They're cutting all the youngest ones
Said this dirt
Is turning Christ to make repent his lust
So I've heard
That the puppet tugs its pull

Please dismantle
All these phantom limbs
It's the evidence
Of humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments

Everyone stabs all the time
Persuasion deflowers your sympathy
Everybody has chosen to help
The shovels that bury me

Nova meat
The prude slit whispers of bovine heaps
Strapped to unearth of mantis flowers
Prunefingers who tug in a zealot's shroud

I will scald supreme truth
As it touches this house
I will scald supreme truth

Please dismantle
All these phantom limbs
It's the evidence
Of humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments
Humans as ornaments

I will scald supreme truth as it touches this house
I will scald supreme truth as it touches this house

Everyone stabs all the time
Persuasion deflowers your sympathy
Everybody has choosen to help
The shovels that bury
Everyone stabs all the time
Persuasion deflowers your sympathy
Everybody has choosen to help
The shovels that bury

It lacks a human pulse
It lacks a human pulse
It lacks a human pulse
It lacks a human pulse
It lacks a human pulse
It lacks a human pulse
It lacks a human pulse, don't know for sure now
It lacks a human pulse, don't know for sure now
It lacks a human pulse, ah, ah, ah

Uhh, as another side note, I'm pretty sure that the Mars Volta website says to check wikipedia, so this entire discussion can be completely ignored. As for the song, people can have personal meanings if they really want to, but the only people that will ever completely and utterly understand the lyrics to any song the way they are intended to be understood are the writers themselves. Unless I hear a description from either Cedric himself, or someone who works with the band and knows what they're talking about, then I'm not very prone to care. This website shouldn't be used to argue about what something means when it means an entirely different thing to each person. As for the discussion of the other albums, it should already be a common known fact to any TRUE follower of The Mars Volta that Bedlam in Goliath, Frances the Mute, and De-loused in the Comatorium are all concept albums and do have very specific meanings, meanings that are simply clouded by the genius metaphors that Cedric employs. Amputechture is the first (and likely only) non-concept full-length album that The Mars Volta has or ever will make. To discuss the exact meaning of a song that everyone can perceive differently is a waste of time. On the other hand, discussing the meaning of songs like Goliath, Metatron, Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of), Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt, and such, is something worth doing , but only if you actually have a clue what you're talking about, and not making random guesses based on what a song means to you. That's not to say you shouldn't post what a song means to you, because doing so is a good way to express opinions and possibly open up a new understanding for someone else. The problem is when people attempt to disprove and opinion. "This is true. This is false. This is that way. This is not that way." Those arguments are a complete waste of time unless something really is that way, or something really is false. That said, everyone can hopefully shut up unless they've got something productive to the discussion.

BTW, Johnny Goodness, I highly doubt you've ever even listened to Frances the Mute, or any other Mars Volta album in it's entirety. In other words, you're a fag.

Amputechture is the effect of losing something. In this case, that something is Jesus. Because of it, churches rose, religious systems were built, and false ideas were inflicted upon people. For one, women lost much of their dignity because of the bible, a male-dominating story. Severing the breast. Any god or superior being is a philistine, a force against any other intelect or artistic abilities other than itself. Satan was the one who tempted the humans to learn, something so evil, something so creative. Wittiness is a bad thing nowadays. We are ornaments on God's arms, nimble and close to falling off, losing faith, as he amputates his own arm. Amputechture. Amputee. God amputates the arm we live on, leaving us humans behind. The holiest of water would destroy Satan, one who could offer the humans things they could only dream of.

Where do you people get these crazy fucking ideas about what these songs "really mean"

The Mars Volta is great, but not every song they made was about abortion or some stupid shit you thought that it meant

hey i know it's hard to understand what theyre are saying for some people but they are at least contributing their thoughts so other people have something to start with. and besides Cedric uses speculative fiction and verbosity so he uses a lot of unnecessary words to describe something.

Johnny, every song they write is about something. It's hard to understand is the problem, so there are tons of different things people think... The first cd is fairly explained with their book [which is hard as hell to sit down and read i might add] and the third is discussed on forums. So far every cd has a story, now we have a new one to find out about :D

    johnny: you're retarded

the whole frances the mute album was about a girl who was born as a result of rape and lived her life as a prostitute, to ultimately get hung on the gallows while everybody watched(in a nutshell).

there are plenty of fetal references as well as abortion/prostitution references on frances the mute.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
