"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
I was looking up the meaning of this song and i found one site about the lead singer Corey Taylor explaining what the song Through Glass was really about. This is what he says during the interview.. ---> I remember exactly where I was. It was 2004 and I was on tour with Slipknot. I was sitting in a European hotel room watching a music video channel, seeing act after act after act of this insane, innocuous, plastic music. They were plastic, bubbly, gossamer-thin groups where it was really more about the clothes they wore and the length of their cheekbones than it was about the content of the song they were singing. It really made me mad. I was like, is this it? Have we just gone full circle? Did the singer/songwriter revolution never happen? Is it just the same drivel from the same replicate over and over again? 'Through Glass' is really a very angry song. It's me basically calling 'bulls--t' on pretty much everyone involved with the 'American Idol'-type shows. It has its place, but when you're basically cornering the market and making it very hard for anyone who actually writes their own music to get ahead, then it's wrong and that's really why I wrote this song.
and sir that right there is why I think Corey is a phenomenal song writer! Every song that I've ever heard from him has had some deep explored meaning that I can understand and I can then sit and think about such questions and then evolve as a human and try to change things through music just as he is trying!
I read an interview that Corey Taylor did on the Roadrunner Records website. He talks about how the new album will reflect alot on how his wife, Scarlett, has helped him battle alchoholism. He attempted to jump off the 8th floor balcony of a hotel but Scarlett was there and managed to stop him. The phrase "Through the Glass" could mean that he's looking at himself through a mirror, wondering what he's become or it could also mean that he's looking through a drinking glass at his wife.

I think that through the glass is really a metaphor for putting on a fake display. He's looking through the glass, so the person on the other side thinks he looks normal and can see him clearly. In reality though, the glass is dividing them and behind the glass (or in his head) things aren't well.

The other person's perspective is clearly different from his own because of the glass. The glass could be a variety of things. A lot of people have mentioned alcoholism, but something like depression could also be really be that. For the latter, maybe not for Corey in particular, but if you want to find a personal reason. There are a lot of things that paint a false image of ourselves in our every day lives.

For this song, I've always got the feeling it was about prison. "I'm looking at you through the glass", is the glass in between the Convict and the visitor, and he's saying it feels like forever that he's been in there for. Just a thought.
@soapropos I have to agree with you. I was in jail and the lyrics made me think of the person on the other side of the glass when i got a visitor. The lyrics make perfect sense because it felt like forever in there.

Ok...So when they premiered the Through Glass video on AOL, there was an interview Corey did and he said that this song is about how fake and plastic Hollywood is. So I admit, I was waaaaay off! lol

In an interview with Corey, it was stated that this song is about his feelings toward the music industry and how it barley resembles what it used to be, instead now being fill with talentless and lazy rich kids (epidemic of the mannequins) as is made apparent in the video in which the rich swingin party is gradually revealed to just be cardboard cutouts and are all, even the house and pool, are one by one carried away. the video also ends with the band in front of the HOLLYWOOD sign which reads HOLLOWOOD which itself turns out to be another cutout.
imo i really think the through the glass is refering to looking through a drinking glass seems alot more fitting for the song
