Got a brand new roof above my head
All the empty boxes thrown away
I rearranged the place a hundred times today
But the ordering of objects couldn't hide whats missing

All these things, should make me happy
Make me happy to be home again
All these things, should make me happy
Make me happy to be alone again

Got myself a bottle of red wine
Got a night with nothing else to do
I think I might know what I really want
But is a brighter discontent the best that I can hope to find
Got a big black television set
Now I can watch just what I want
But I'm here staring up at pictures on the wall
Where are you, you're still stuck inside 'em all

All these things, should make me happy
Make me happy to be home again
All these things, should make me happy
Make me happy to be alone again

But love is not these belongings and surroundings
Though theres meaning in the memories they hold
A breaking heart in an empty apartment
Was the loudest sound I ever heard
Got a desk, I'll write myself a note
Pretending that it came from you
On hotel stationary, from the time we first met
Whatever I can do, 'cause I won't throw my hands up yet

Chorus

But love is not these belongings that surround you
Though theres meaning in the memories they hold
A breaking heart in an empty apartment
Was the loudest sound I never heard
But I'll be fine if I don't look around me that much for whats gone
If only I could wait here just a little while and let time pass in my room

This was featured on the season finale of Nip/Tuck and I couldn't believe it! I'm so excited that they'll finally get the recognition they deserve. :)

if you like this song you really ought to buy Declare A New State...the album it's on. The album as a whole is every bit as amazing as this individual song. How this album isn't somewhere on every single best of '06 list is a complete mystery to me.

until reading the lyrics right now, i thought the last line of the second set of verses was "Where are you, you're still stuck inside the mall"... the real lyrics make a lot more sense. lol

I loved this song so much at one point; i hate it now because it perfectly describes where im at right now. My [ex]boyfriend and i went out for a year and a half and the breakup was messy. Im moving out of state 1000 miles away (for college) and this song just makes me think that things WONT be okay.

"Got a brand new roof above my head All the empty boxes thrown away I rearranged the place a hundred times today But the ordering of objects couldn't hide whats missing"----Ugh, not excited about moving now...

"All these things, should make me happy Make me happy to be home again All these things, should make me happy Make me happy to be alone again"---SHOULD but they probably wont :(

"I think I might know what I really want But is a brighter discontent the best that I can hope to find... I'm here staring up at pictures on the wall Where are you, you're still stuck inside 'em all"--- i got rid of all our pictures :/

"But love is not these belongings that surround you Though theres meaning in the memories they hold A breaking heart in an empty apartment"-- Yes, i shall be living in my own apartment as well, first time out on my own :o[

"I'll be fine if I don't look around me that much for whats gone If only I could wait here just a little while and let time pass in my room "--- If only.....

It should be "Love is not these belongings that surround me" not surroundings. It's ". . .was the loudest sound I never heard" not ever heard. It's "I'll be fine if I don't look around me now, too much for whats gone" not that much for whats gone And finally, it's "If only I can stay hear just a little while - - and let time pass in my room" not If only I could wait here.

I think thats all the errors

This song depresses me a bit. But it's very good and it strikes your head with a combination of sentimentalism and beauty.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
