The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I don't think it's a break-up song. I think it's about a guy who is feeling a bit overwhelmed by his first experience with "real love".
I think there's a mistake in the lyrics above. I think it should read: It hasn't felt like this before, It hasn't felt like home before you
"felt like home" means his heart is completely "at home" & comfortable with her, and it hasn't been that way when he was "in love" before. That's why he's feeling so nervous and uptight.
He feels like he's digging himself into a hole and the walls are about to cave in on him.
He's worried that maybe she won't feel the same way about him.
She seems to think that it's just a passing thing for him. "I know you're scared, That I'll soon be over it"
But he says "Part of the beauty, Of falling in love with you, Is the fear that you won't fall"
He has really put himself "out there", and realizes that she might reject his love, but the nervous uncertainty is actually a big part of his excitement. The risk is an added thrill for him.
I know, I've been there. It's scary, but exhilerating to know that you've put your nickel down, and you might get rejected. And you know it's worth the risk, when you are certain that she's the one for you. That happened to me 13 years ago, and I'm still in love with her today - like a school kid.
this song is so good, sweet and honest
this is perfect. honestly, it's so real. love isn't perfect. sometimes you wonder whether or not the other person is still in it with you, and sometimes, hey, they're not. but if it's really love, they'll come back. staying in love is one of the toughest things! "the fear you won't fall" - exactly. i know what it feels like. but when it's strong enough, you realize why you're together, and that's the beauty of it.
I love this song - it's very well written. It resonates with me right now because of where I'm at, relationship wise. I'm not "falling in love" but have been in love for some time and things are in limbo right now, but anyway... I think the 2 phrases that stand out to me the most are:

"I hate the phone but I wish you'd call"... I mean, who hasn't felt like that? It's such a paradox - hating something, but wanting it anyway because it would mean so much.
The part in the song that says.... "part of the beauty of falling in love with you, is the fear you wont fall."... is a sentence that I feel like almost has a double meaning... because you have the aspect of if I fall in love with you, you might not fall in love with me back.... but then there is the other meaning I am getting out of this song.. maybe "you wont fall" because you fall in love with this person, but you actually don't fall at all because they are right there to catch you when you fall for them... I don't know if this is how the song was intended to come across, but that is one of the messages it brings to me... maybe its wishful thinking? ha who knows... but my girlfriend just used this song for me... and either way I feel like it could be true.. I just really hope the reason shes not falling is because im there to catch her....
I heard this song on an episode of Grey's Anatomy and it was so beautiful the way it was used.
My favorite part is the phone.
Joshua has such a soulful voice, very reminiscent of Damien Rice. This part is about the loneliness he is feeling without the person in question. I think it is about breaking up or having a fight with someone and finally realising how much the person means to you during the person’s absence. It is easy to say you miss someone but, it is very hard to cope with that feeling.
This is my favorite joshua radin song. I love its simplicity, honesty... anyone whose been in love can easily relate to this song... missing someone you just last seen a few minustes ago (missing you more than i thought i could or should)... tolerating, even almost liking something you hated before, just because of this special person (the phone in this case)...
THis song is about being in love with a friend and dealing with the issue of telling your best friend you're in love with them. He misses her more than he should because he sees her as a possible love. "It hasn't felt like home before" because all the girls he's dated before have never been his best friend.
So he's dealing with the turmoil of should he tell her or not "part of the beauty of falling in love with you is the fear you won't fall" The line "I know you're scared that I'll soon be over it" to me says that he's trying to reassure her that this isn't some fluke feeling, that he really does love her that that he's not just going to change his mind in the middle of it all.
"I hate the phone, but I wish you'd call" he obviously wants to talk to her. I don't know the reason he can't talk to her... maybe they've talked about being a couple and he was unable to tell her that it wasn't some fluke relationship.. and he thought that being a lone was better than feeling this way. Maybe he screwed things up.
Anyways... boy and girl are best friends, he likes her, she's scared, they talk about it and either decided to not go through with it or that he is unable to completely commit to her... she leaves, he decides she's all that he wants and now he can't reach her.

This song means so much to me. My ex-boyfriend kind of dedicated this song to me. It fit perfectly, because I was scared that it was just something he was feeling for me at one moment and he would find someone else soon.
