This is one of my favorite songs. https://fnfgo.io
Well I lost an eye in Mexico
I lost two teeth, where I don't know
People see me coming and they move to the other side of the road
I robbed a liquor store or two
I made myself at home a few times
Borrow myself a car when I need it
I got me a shack at the bottom of the road
Fixing cars and giving tows
I spend all my money
On the lottery
When I win the lottery
Gonna buy all the girls on my block
Color TV and a bottle of French perfume
When I win the lottery
Gonna donate half my money to the city
So they have to name a street or a school or a park after me
When I win the lottery
Never ran a flag
Up a pole
Like Mr. Red White and Blue down the road
But I never call myself a hero for killing a known communist
Now I could walk into any old bar
And find a fight without looking too hard
But I never killed someone I don't know
Just cause someone told me to.
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy the house next to Mr.
Red, White and Blue
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy post 306
American legion, paint it red with five gold stars
When I win the lottery
When the end comes to this old world
The righteous will cry and the rest will curl up
God won't take the time
To sort your ashes from mine
Cause we zig and zag between good and bad
Stumble and fall on right and wrong
Cause the tumbling dice with the luck of the draw
Just leads us on
And when I win the lottery
Gonna buy all the girls on my block
Silver plated
Six shooters with a quart of the finest highland scotch
Cause when I win the lottery
The righteous will shake their heads and say
That God is good, but surely works in mysterious ways
When I win the lottery.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
"paint it red with five gold stars" is a reference to the flag of the People's Republic of China.
The song isn't mocking the narrator, it's taking a shot at the "righteous" who think that God is always on their side, when in reality plenty of things can happen to prove their worldview is bulls***, like the lowest of the low (the narrator) winning the lottery.
But I never killed someone I don't know Just cause someone told me to.
While the narrator may not be all that respectable, given his opening self description, his point is the Mr. Red White & Blue people of the world are no heroes for having killed strangers under orders. Also that god is not on their side.
And in the closing stanza he wants to empower women by giving them guns and booze, because he understands the kind of oppression they face in our 'free' society.
@boombud I WON THE LOTTERY: I was going to be a retired bus driver without savings, the thought of life after retirement kept draining me daily, I have been playing lotto for years without winning. I went online for research on life after retirement when I saw testimonies where appreciated a spell caster called Dr. Bubuza for giving them LOTTO winning numbers so I immediately contacted him for help to win the LOTTO 6/49 JACKPOT via WhatsApp: +1 920 474 6543, he said I can only win with the right numbers which will be revealed to him by his gods after casting a lotto spell. I did as he instructed and the spell was cast, he gave me the numbers and said I should go and play without fear. I bought the ticket and played. It was very shocking and surprising when I discovered that all the numbers Dr. Bubuza revealed to me matched all six winning numbers in the April 6 draw. I became the winner of $18.7 million with the help of Dr. Bubuza numbers. I will continue to appreciate him; DO you need help to win the lottery ? Unfounded optimism and the American Dream (Mr. Red, White & Blue).
"Mexico" is a reference to the country south of the United States of America.

Pretty sure it's "unknown communists" not "a known communist."
No, it's "a known communist."
From the songwriter at davidlowerymusic.com/blogs/300-songs-blog/posts/46-the-van-part-1-when-i-win-the-lottery-i-m-gonna-buy-a-new-van: "I rear ended someone on the CA17/I280 interchange in Santa Clara. In the long run this was fortuitous. The tow truck driver launched into a monologue that became the basis for the song When I Win The Lottery. Over the course of the 30 minute ride... the tow truck driver confessed to a series of small felonies and a profound contempt for virtually every aspect of our society. Most striking was his contempt for religion and patriotism. He was out of his mind but totally fascinating."

American Dream indeed. The person talking is about out podunk as you can get. I'm not sure the band isn't sort of mocking that sort of guy a little.
