"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
So at my show on Monday
I was hoping someday
You'd be on your way to better things
It's not about your make-up
Or how you try to shape up
To these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams, honey
So now you pour your heart out
You're tellin' me you're far out
Not about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings
'Cause I'm a better man
Movin' onto better things
But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
And at the show on Tuesday
She was in her mindset
Tempered furs and spangled boots
Looks are deceiving
Make me believe it
And these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams, honey, yeah
So won't you go far
Tell me you're a keeper
Not about to lie down for your cause
And you don't pull my strings
'Cause I'm a better man
Movin' onto better things
But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
Yes, I wish that we never made it
Through all the summers
And kept them up instead of
Kickin' us back down to the suburbs
Yes, I wish that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kickin' us back down to the suburbs
But, uh-oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
This song in my opinion is a song he's singing to an ex. About his new girlfriend. "I love her because she moves in her own way" saying that he loves this new girl because she is different. This song just hit home the moment I heard it. It couldn't be any closer to that meaning for me. Now he's just saying "now you pour your heart out tellin me you're far out, not about to lie down for your cause", "oh ah oh, I love her because, she moves in her own way", besically just saying you're back complaining now telling me you can't handle it but not willing to make the effort. Have fun, correct the lyrics. Laterz!
I love this song!!!!! I heart the Kooks!
I really really love this song!!!! One of the best on the album!
so wonderful ^^
I like this song. I decided to start listening to the Kooks cause I heard them in a commercial. It was this song and it was like a girl razor commercial. I like this song because to me. Its the same girl. My girlfriend was wrapped up in being the perfect one that it was a turnoff. The reason I liked her was because "she moved in her own way" and with her trying to be that perfect girlfriend it was just straining the relationship.
She got over that though and realized what was happening as she tried to be better and started being herself again. I love her so much!
the song is definatley about katie muela cause he says in a interview half of the album the songs i wrote were abt the relationship with me n katie n the reason they split up was becasue of they were both getting big in the music and touring alot so didnt see much of each other and katie decided it was best if they split up but luke didnt agree so he says like how cares im a beter man moving on to beter things and there was no new girl for a long while he was too buisyy with his music .its also an amazing song the lyrics are amazing especially at tht age and the song is abt her being different n standing out n stuff and luke loves being different also paper dreams obviasly mean magazine girls which he h8s and his lyrics just make total scence and hes an amazing musician
I think he’s singing to a girlfriend that he is growing apart from. I think “paper dreams” refers to planning out their lives together and he mentions the suburbs etc. But she’s more invested in the relationship than he is and she had to go to his show just to hear about his day. He’d rather them both have independence though since he loves how “she moves in her own way”. He’s just looking out for himself
aww this song is sooo sweet, i love it. its clearly a love song and it has a really cool rythm. kooks rule man, im gonna go see them in may
it's about not going with the flow, doing what you want, and being different. this girl doesnt dress and look like 'paper dreams' - the girls we see in magazines. i think being yourself is much much cooler. reminds me of a special someone :-) xx this is my favourite kooks song, along with 'i want you back'.
think it means he loves this girl cuz shes dif instead bein a barbie an followin the crowd.wich sum1 felt like this bout me but in r society it seems wer only accepted if we follow "paper dreams" as in the dreams set 4 us in mags an we look like the people on the front covers.sumday the world wil learn
I don't think the world is like that at all. If you be an individual, someone out there is going to notice it. Chances are, they might even wish they had a style like you instead of just being 'one of the crowd'. Don't conform to societal norms; after all, that's what this song is all about.<br /> x
