Got a big plan, this mindset maybe it's right
At the right place and right time, maybe tonight
And the whisper or handshake sending a sign
Wanna make out and kiss hard, wait never mind

Late night, and passing, mention it flipped her
Best friend, its no thing maybe it slipped
But the slip turns to terror and a crush to light
When she walked in, he froze up, believe it's the fright

It's cute in a way, till you cannot speak
And you leave to have a cigarette, your knees get weak
An escape is just a nod and a casual wave
Obsessed about it, heavy for the next two days

It's only just a crush, it'll go away
It's just like all the others it'll go away
Or maybe this is danger and he just don't know
You pray it all away but it continues to grow

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear
I want to fucking tear you apart

Then he walked up and told her, thinking that he'd passed
And they talked and looked away a lot, doing the dance
Her hand brushed up against his, she left it there
Told him how she felt and then they locked in a stare

They took a step back, thought about it, what should they do
'Cause there's always repercussions when you're dating in school
But their lips met, and reservations started to pass
Whether this was just an evening or a thing that would last

Either way he wanted her and this was bad
Wanted to do things to her it was making him crazy
Now a little crush turned into a like
And now he wants to grab her by the hair and tell her

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear
I want to fucking tear you apart

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear
I want to fucking tear you apart

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear
I want to fucking tear you apart

    Song Meaning

It appears that most of you people have too overly romantic views on how you make love to a girl. Not everyone is into rose petals, candles and feathers, you know...

You're totally missing the point if you think this song is about rape or murder.

The "hero" has a crush on a girl in shcool, but afraid of falling in love with her. Not because he has low self-esteem, but because he's not an ordinary guy. He has a dark mindset, but tries to act normal. He understands that there's a big chance the girl may become afraid of his true self, so he's being very cautious not to let himself slip.

He accidentally tells about his feelings to her best friend. When she walks in, he gets very nervous and leaves.

Whole weekend he's being tortured by his obsession with her. In disbelief that everything will work out, he hopes that it will just go away, but can't stop it from growing.

There's no way back now. The next time they meet again he decides to face her. After some awkward moments their eyes meet and she tells him that she likes him.

He explodes. It doesn't matter now if it's gonna be a one night stand or a long relationship. He wants her BAD. But in a very sinister and dominant way. He wants to press against her chest, hold her tight and fuck her like crazy till she's completely exhausted. He wants to "do things to her" while she just lie still and submit. Of course, he doesn't want to tear her apart literally.

This song is awesome and I can relate to it. A shame that so many misunderstand it.

So I put myself in the shoe's of the "hero" and superimposed my own life into the song. To me it boils down to a simple crush that this "guy" can't get out of his head. It's an affliction he has that is driving him crazy and no matter what he does to repress the idea of her he is unable to expostulate the idea of "them" to himself. So he hates her; he hates her because he can't control his own life, he hates her because of the trepidation she impregnates in his being and the way she has stolen every waking moment from him. But even with all that hate there is an equal if not greater love/caring. Upon the idea which has been preoccuping his head coming to fruitioa battle must be fought from within to decided which emotion will win. For that reason he wishes he never knew her and that he could just "tear her apart" and be done with her.

But that whole paragraph is leaving out one key line which may be the turning point for the entire analysis. That line is: Cause theres always repercussions when you're dating in school. This could bring a whole new spin on the songs meaning or it could just be an excuse he is using to help combat the longing for her. For my purposes I'll have to side with the latter for now.

But here are what "I" think the lyrics say:

"Got a big plan, this mindset maybe it's right At the right place and right time, maybe tonight In the whisper or handshake sending a sign Wanna make out and kiss hard, wait nevermind

Late night, in passing, mention it flipped to her Best friend it's those saying maybe it slipped But the slip turns to terror and a crush to light When she walked in, he throws up, leave it to fright

It's cute, in a way, till you cannot speak And you leave to have a cigarette, knees get weak Escape was just a nod and a casual wave Obsess about it heavy for the next two days

It's only just a crush, it'll go away It's just like all the others it'll go away Or maybe this is danger and he just don't know You pray it all away but it continues to grow

I want to hold you close Skin pressed against me tight Lie still, and close your eyes girl So lovely, it feels so right

    Lyric Correction

hey, just a suggestion - when you update and fix lyrics, there is no need to put the changed words in caps. it's an eyesore, but more importantly, it's rather passive aggressive. having the correct lyrics are correct are all that matters. there are some of us that like to copy+paste lyrics into our itunes and having to manually correct things (such as words in capital letters!) is cumbersome and annoying.

    thank you! :)

this band is so awesome...they have wicked lyrics that are so relateable because they're issues that everyone has dealt with one time or another. I think the narrator has some crazy fanatsies about this girl but nothing really happened between them. She's only seen from afar.

I didn't hear the Bauhaus influence, at all, and I'm a huge Bauhaus fan. Definitely some Curtis/Joy Division influence there, the guy sounds like Curtis has been reincarnated. Maybe except this guy isn't as good as our lovely Ian. Cool song, but I really don't like the rest of their stuff. The album was disappointing.

I think it's about two people crushing on one another, and there are difficulties. But they get together, anyways. Pretty simple, little, if any, hidden meaning.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
