Such a lonely day
And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life

Such a lonely day
Should be banned
It's a day that I can't stand

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life

Such a lonely day
Shouldn't exist
It's a day that I'll never miss
Such a lonely day
And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life

And if you go, I wanna go with you
And if you die, I wanna die with you
Take your hand and walk away

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life (life)

Such a lonely day
And it's mine
It's a day that I'm glad I survived

It's about being really, really, really depressed. Feeling alone, then being glad that you made it through that bad time in your life (i.e. you didn't kill yourself). Possibly being glad because it made you a stronger person to go through that time.

I think this song is about loneliness, though I could be wrong.

Actually, I could be wrong here, but I think this song is parodizing a world-view. It doesn't use the same lyricism in its poetry that they usually have ... "the most loneliest day of my life?" They know better than that. What I hear when I listen to this is that they're mocking the emo kids who listen to "Chop Suey" without understanding it, and write bad poetry. The whole thing is melodramatic and has very little depth compared to "Chop Suey" or "Soldier Side" for instance. In fact, except for the excellent vocals and instruments, it bears very little resemblance to anything else System has done. It's a beautiful spoof.

sigh Yes, please, let the flaming begin.

I hate it when people try to sound intelligent when defining songs that are completely obvious to define.

Here, I find myself presented with two alternative explanations to this song.

    A) it is honest B) it is subversive

If a) is true, then this song is about the truly most loneliestest of days ever to exist. It is straight forward to a fault, and there is no explanation given for the banality of either the lyrics or the music. It is just that bad.

If b) is true, then this song is a satire (not a parody) of EMO music. The banality, under this explaination, is intentional in both the music and the lyrics.

It is as if they are saying that EMO is so easy to do, anyone can do it. There is no actual feeling involved. No honest experience that needs venting. Just recycled angst opened well past its sell by date.

Please note how the lyrics never actually refer to ANYTHING AT ALL. Rather they are the epitome of the recycled emo song. So lonely, and I want to kill myself, yadda yadda yadda. No reason really, just felt like it at the time.

    A) forces me to lose all respect for the band, as their standards have sunk to abominable depths, if this is not an ironic song. B) actually makes me respect them more for taking on the music industry at its dark already been chewed core.

    Song Meaning

ok im sick of all these wrong accusations of the song. if you have watched the video, there is fire on every scene. daron's brother died in a fire. its talking about how the day he died, he is glad he survived but he is lonely from his brother being gone.

    My Interpretation

I know the song is about Daron's brother, but the way I interpret it is sitting around, realizing for the first time, you are truly alone. You have people you care about, and can trust, but due to some kind of event, you no longer see them as often or even at all anymore. And when that happens, you realize, you're alone.

I see it this way because just a few days ago was the last time I will see a lot of people, people I care about, people who care about me, people I trust. I don't trust very many people, I don't trust my family at all, and out of people I can trust with some of my darkest secrets, I will only ever definitely see two of them again, and only for the next few months. Then, I don't know if I will ever see them again.

One of the people I won't see again, helped me, and is still helping me, through depression. For a time, I wanted to kill myself. I cut myself quite frequently, and he helped me to get out of it. Granted, sometimes I still want to, since it's only been little more than half a week since I stopped, but still. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be alive right now.

Another of my friends, I doubt I'll be able to see her again. She helped me come to terms with exactly who I am, and if it weren't for her, I'd still be suffering from confusion as to who I am. She's amazing, and I love her so much for it. But, after just a few days ago, I've realized how alone I really am now, without her or my other friend.

So, there's my rant about the song, what it means to me, and a bunch of other things that nobody probably cares about.

To the retard at the end there........you are a fucking moron! This song is personal emotions as far as i can see! most people can relate to this! I hate to hear Daron slated for his singing and they say he sucks in this! But i strongly disagree! He isn't the best singer in the world but he is good! His voice just fits the song and it makes it feel more personal.

I could be, as the title suggests, a Lonely Day but i thought it could be away from a partner and away from everyone and isolated from the world. ''and if you go....etc.'' sounds like he is talking to a partner. But considering it goes into Soldierside, it could be related to the war and that you feel lonely in the trenches or what ever. Depends on your view i suppose...

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
