I think they're calling her because she eventually will die (and it's not her decision) so she feels the pressure.<br /> About the boulder to her ear reminds me of Luke 40: "I tell you that if these were silent, the stones would cry out." (the difference between a boulder and a stone is the size, and both of them are rocks.) She's not saying anything ("if these were silent") and still can't hear them talk. (This interpretation is based on Luke's context.)<br /> You didn't mention about the part of us thinking she was an amateur playing with her temperature. She knows that by saying that the rocks' are not taking she will me judged as a girl with "poor faith" who is playing with her "temperature" that sometimes she's confident but then she can also have doubts.<br /> About the "song about angels" and that the dumb-box is the TV, I agree and I add that the feather may represent God. A movie of God or something like that.<br /> About Babylon, I agree but I also add that in the New Testament, is a symbol for every kind of evil. He tells her again about what happens when she turn her toughts off and is "as quiet as an ambulance staking out the neighborhood". I'm not so sure of that but a stake is a vertical post to which an offender is bound for execution by burning. Maybe, an ambulance, instead of saving people, is killing people. "Waiting for the blade to slip and that final blow", she is the ambulance and she is waiting for the death. "But nothing happens, it's a cruel joke" she doesn't expect to find anything. @netmantx <br /> i know these are old comments but I'm just throwing it out there for anyone who comes across this page - i think the songs about angels/feather on the dumb box could be a reference to the belief that seeing white feathers appear in random/unlikely places is a sign that angels are near or watching over you, and that you get other "signs" like this that are commonly repeated angelic/holy references in songs, seeing the same numbers places, etc. <br /> <br /> and this could all easily happen without noticing it, so i think the line could mean like...she just keeps noticing signs in every day life as a divine spirit sending her a message, maybe from the view that shes frustrated she cant stop noticing or placing significance on these things when there is none (aka she doubts religion and spirituality) and/or maybe that they're supposed to be a sign of hope, of love and guidance from god <br /> <br /> and yet nothing is getting better and it feels like they're taunting her - maybe a link to the problem of evil , and the personal connection with god - maybe she feels like god doesnt listen to individual prayers and his love for humanity isnt real, hes described as wholy perfect, omnibenevolent etc and any flaw you could find in him (allowing human suffering) is explained off as beyond human understanding. <br /> <br /> and the take from this here is that god is superior and our lives and suffering arent worth so much - it seems like a cruel game to allow one to suffer so greatly in all they know of the world as this is a concious souls whole reality and say its necessary and part of a plan. you could go on forever about all of this but basically just the flaws in the notion of God / his features and maybe the frustration and confusion at there being no final understandable explaination of why we are here, where we came from, moral truths, etc.<br /> <br /> , either from the view of a believer or non believer. and/or really its all just nothing and shes grasping at whatever she can to find hope and guidance. and shes annoyed at herself for being so naive and getting her hopes up over and over to have them crushed or just not met. she either resents god or the belief in god i think<br /> <br /> also i think its just cus its a random object but reference to the tv using dumb-box could be significant - think about the reason why television got referred to as an idiot box in context of all the crap i just said. babylon is pretty self explanatory after that<br /> <br /> im not sure how well known the signs of angels thing is, I know someone who talked vry in depth to me about it as a kid and always felt like it was a common superstition but im not even sure if thats true haha. thats always what came into my mind on that line. sorry im so bad at explaining things i tend to just feel the ideas and cant verbalise what I mean so end up totally blabbing on about shit lol<br /> <br /> but I think its such an interesting song and i hadnt seen the angels thing be talked about here but i always thought it was definitely a reference to that. maybe its not, but it doesnt matter anyway. its such an captivating cool song, I love regina's style of writing and how much she embraces listener interpretation. i normally dont try analyze a song specifically but rather feel it which i think is what comes naturally to most people with art. <br /> <br /> but yeah i never feel stupid for exploring vastly different meanings to her songs or lyrics though or like any song needs be be defined a certain meaning or is tainted if you attempt to apply one (idk i think trying to boil down and logic out artistic expression can taint it sometimes yknow? maybe its just me haha) but yeah they're so versatile and amazing ..shes a very talented musician. I've read a lot of theories on it and find it just interesting to explore, but the song still blows my mind and i dont feel like the search for a meaning is a burden or ruins the feeling and the art<br /> <br /> shes never seemed comfortable defining a songs meaning in interviews and likes that people can find their own, along with saying she doesnt even understand them sometimes it just comes to her. I love that alot, and its helped me stop feeling such negativity and avoidance towards analysing lyrics/poetry/art/etc, its fun and you dont have to get attached or let it ruin the song because its not all there is to it now, and the songwriter isnt all there is to the music either. <br /> <br /> her music is so interesting and creates such interesting imagery and emotion, the religious references always interest me the most. i can imagine she'd be such a cool and interesting person to have a conversation with about philosophy and religion and people....damn I love regina shes one of the first artists who i really took to and fell in love with her music. sorry for the rambling im in the middle of final exams and coming of age in general haha I've been thinking a lot lately and struggle to organise or word my thoughts how i wish. music is very important to me and writing/playing it (not lyrics, i just play the piano) is the only form of expression i dont feel like somethings missing from. <br /> <br /> i struggle with words a lot and expressing yourself, your beliefs, thoughts, your stories and emotions seems so impossible to me but finding artists like regina who reach that with not only music but language as well is incredible to me and listening to it can be a very cathartic experience in some ways. In general i find all forms of music incredible, its such a pure beautiful thing it feels like we were supposed to make it, it just sounds and feels so right. im so happy musicians can still flourish in modern society when art and expression is so underrated/appreciated and regarded much less highly to in the past.<br /> <br /> haha i hope this wasnt just total bullshit rambling and someone out there might find some of it a bit interesting. anyone reading this keep exploring music however you wish its such a beautiful thing
