How I wish I could surrender my soul
Shed the clothes that become my skin
See the liar that burns within my needing
How I wish I'd chosen darkness from cold
How I wish I had screamed out loud
Instead I've found no meaning

I guess it's time I run far, far away, find comfort in pain
All pleasure's the same, it just keeps me from trouble
Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray
I've heard what they say, but I'm not here for trouble
It's more than just words, it's just tears and rain

How I wish I could walk through the doors of my mind
Hold memory close at hand
Help me understand the years
How I wish I could choose between Heaven and Hell
How I wish I would save my soul
I'm so cold from fear

I guess it's time I run far, far away, find comfort in pain
All pleasure's the same, it just keeps me from trouble
Hides my true shape, like Dorian Gray
I've heard what they say, but I'm not here for trouble
Far, far away, find comfort in pain
All pleasure's the same, it just keeps me from trouble
It's more than just words, it's just tears and rain

Oh
Tears and rain
Oh
Tears and rain

Far, far away, find comfort in pain
All pleasure's the same, it just keeps me from trouble
It's more than just words
It's just tears and rain

I think that many more references to the Picture of Dorian Gray can be found in this song. The chorus says "All pleasure's the same" which is similar to the story because Dorian lives his entire life for pleasure. After living for awhile and never changing physically, he begins repeating the same pleasures over and over again and then eventually starts looking for different forms of pleasure. Also "i've heard what they say" and "It's more than just words" In the book, Dorian is influenced greatly by a character that says many of Wilde's most quoted lines. Although the character (Harry) says stuff liek "the only way to rid of temptation is to yield to it" he never follows these ideas to their full extent, whereas Dorian does. It is these words that first "corrupt" Dorian and creates him what he is. Towards the end of the novel, Dorian has become disgusted/frightened with his life and he is trying to find an opium den to forget everything. It is raining hard and outside is dreary and this part also connects with " guess it's time I run far, far away; find comfort in pain"

Find comfort in pain... That's a key line. I reckon its about self hate because you are too confused to sort out your life, and its too hard to express as words, and becomes... well... tears and rain.

But still, whatever its about, its a great song. Well done Mr. Blunt.

i think this song has a lot to do with the identity crisis that people of modern society are going through. the concept of the unique self, uninhibited is crushed by the need for conformity rather than just acceptance.

'shed the clothes that become my skin'... strip away the facade put up to conform, 'see the fire that burns within my needing'... reveal the true wants, desires, etc.

the reference to Dorian Gray is perfect for the subject, showing how our need to subvert the true self to conform will only result in 'tears and rain' unseen to the rest of the world... pain that has its comforts, but also its internal rammifications.

he says 'how i wish i could walk through the doors of my mind'... wanting to for once be able to think without the influence of society... without the narrowness of conformity. 'so cold with fear'... expressing the motivation behind conformity, fear of isolation, being disliked, etc.

at least thats what i thought...

its a beautifully written song... -ash

I think I am a little late to answer this one but I used to think this song was beautiful when I first had the CD several years ago.

But now I can see it's real meaning to me since I am in a particular place in my mind and life.

I am a beautiful girl. I have always had a great set of morals, priorities, and heart. 'Beautiful inside and out' they all say.

But I have been on a quest to find satisfaction. So intensely that I started t sacrifice myself and compromise my morals for it. Once I had a taste of money and the things that came a long with it, I was hooked. It only made me hungry for more. I am not not a prostitute. I do not sell sexual favors in return for money. But I do sell the sight of myself for money.

Now I find myself with more money than I imagined and lusted after by hundreds of men a day. But it's lonely at the top. The thrill of shopping is gone. All pleasures are the same. There are few things that I want that I can't have. I am starting to feel like Dorian Gray.

The one line ' I wish I chose darkness from cold' is hitting home for me. I live in the light. But it's cold and empty. But I would rather feel warmth even if it is in the dark.

I am now battling myself. I don't know who I am anymore and I almost hope for heartbreak and pain to break this sick cycle.

I am young enough where I do not think I have wasted my life and I am trying to turn it around. But at this moment...this is how I feel.

I'm studying the movie Blade Runner by Ridley Scott at the moment for English. In it there's one of the main quotes "All those moments will be lost in time, like Tears and Rain". Basically the guy who says it is a robot who has run out of time, and hes seen things that humans could never dream of and hes more humane than many of the people in LA 2019, where the movie is set. It deals with the questions of humanity, and how to be content when your time is up. The song reflects the identity crisis that this character goes through and with the confrontation with death, and that being a robot he has no choice of the afterlife, "How I wish I could choose between Heaven and Hell". Its not that hes having trouble choosing, its that he doesnt have the choice and he wishes he was more.. human. I think that the writer is questioning what it is to be human.. and why people do horrible things to one another..

I agree that this is evokative of Roy Batty in Blade Runner...seems he (a "dying", perfect android) wanted to just live but knew he couldn't. He would not go to Heaven or Hell because he wasn't human. His "crimes" were running away from android slavery.

See Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?" for further insight.

When you're tired of acting like you’re fine, because truthfully, you're not. you can't even talk to that person without being so incredibly sad. That person was there for you... and it all got ruined in one moment. and you acted like it didn't hurt, and for a while, you didn't think it did.. but the tears are here, and you now realize that it hurt more than anything in the whole entire world.

    My Interpretation

ok.. i was just watching a documentary on cosmetic procedures and this was playing in the background at the end.. and i think one meaning of the song might have something to do with people who want to look better and change the way they are thru botox, going under the knife, vanity, etc here is how i see it: shed the clothes that become my skin- he is no longer his true self, but he has become a product of what he wears. i wish i chose darkness from cold: he wishes he just hid away from the world, then a cold operation table hides my true shape - he is no longer who he was dorian gray- oscar wilde novel about a handsome man who wants to keep his youthful look forever i guess it's time i run far away, find comfort in pain - run away to new york, california, anywhere associated with these procedures and find comfort in the pain thru plastic surgery to become more comfortable with his looks.. that is just my opinion..

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
