This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

To me, this is an awesome song, and it really gives hope that even under the influence of some crazy-ass ho you still have hope for lucidity. Hope I never get myself in that situation. Can't wait for the new album myself either. :)
It's weird no one else seems to have heard it this way: The "speaker" in the song is talking to an old friend he kind of ditched for this girl. "moved to the west coast" "she never told me that you called".... Now that he see's her for the crazy bitch she is, he's leaving her and realizing what he did to his friend: "if you wrote me off, I'd understand it cause I've been on some other planet". Now he wants to be friends again and make up for everything: "come pick me up, I've landed." The crazy bitch was "the telephone czar" who never let him talk to his friend. Now her "reign" is over and the speaker will "answer" for being so shitty to his buddy. Ben folds just has this magical way of taking the simplest lyrics and making them so powerful. This one really hits home because I dearly miss someone who ran off with his own "Telephone Czar" and I'm hoping he lands soon.
This isn't a happy thought, but i think this may be the same character as the song "The Luckiest"... the line "back when I was still in love" hints at that. He used to be absolutely blinded by his love, and that was where "the luckiest" came from- now he realizes that that relationship wasn't in fact the right one.
For someone who writes such great love songs (albeit, on the good and the bad) he seems to not have a very good track record himself for staying in a relationship. :\ This makes me sad, but I guess that's where some really great music came from. I hope he finally found "the right one"!

Nah, the Australina shows weren't over 18's at least not the Enmore one in Sydney, which was awsome. Also, I like this song, but think that there were better candidates for the single, i.e. Late, Bastard, jesusland. Also, I have the album, yay for being in Australia.
There is one incorrect line in these lyrics. It should be:
