Daybreak
At the bottom of lake
It's a hundred degrees a I can't breath
And I won't get out
'til I figure it out
Thought I'm weak like I can't believe
So you tell me "trust me" I can trust you
Just let me show you
But I gotta work it out in a shadow of doubt
Cause I don't know if I know you

Doing fine, but don't waste me time
Tell me what it is you want to say
You sin, you win, just let me in - hurry
I've been out in the rain all day
So you tell me "trust you" I can trust you
As far as I can throw you
And I'm trying to get out of a shadow of doubt
'cause I don't know if I know you

[Chorus:]
Don't tell me you wanted me
Don't tell me you thought of me
I won't, I swear I won't
(did)
I'll try, I swear I'll try
(lie)

Mother Mary quite contrary
Kiss the boys and make them wary
Things are getting just a little bit scary
It's a wonder I can still breath
Never been much of a doubting thomas
But nothing breaks like a broken promise
You tell me 'bout your two more coming
But once is just enough for me

[Chorus]

I had gotten used to being a soul destroyed
She comes in apparently to fill the void
All dogs need a leash and
At least I'll forget it
And she would never hurt me though she's never said it
But I'm not gonna ask her today
I don't want to scare her away
Oh, Your, town, I'm all alone
And I, just can't, stare at the phone
I want to talk about lifelong mistakes
And you can tell your stepfather I said so

[Chorus]

    My Interpretation

Not wanting to give up on somebody who is a lost cause, but then realizing that they're worthless in the end. A deceitful, hurtful person who is willing to do all that they can to milk another person for personal gain. The person is depicted as a lover, who seems to come in and take all that this guy can give and then leaves him for dead. Chances are she lied about something extreme enough to cause a cut in ties eventually, though it looks like he gave her more chances than she deserved. Betrayal and loss of what was once believed to be a great ally.

According to KM, it's connected to the theme of The Mirror with betrayal and disillusionment the main theme. There also seems to be religious symbolism in the lyrics.

I don't really have a whole lot to offer regarding the meaning of this song, but I do agree that it's thematically connected to The Mirror (which is a top-knotch song, so check it out if you haven't. I'm pretty new to Dream Theater and I bought Awake just the other day. I'm a bit disappointed with it though. Most of the songs on it come off pretty flat. Don't get me wrong - they're well written and the musicianship is superp, as with all Dream Theater stuff. It must be a production thing.

Maybe it has something to do with something that mike portnoy had done because of his alcohol habit that was in "the Mirror"

"I had gotten used to being a soul destroyed She comes in apparently to fill the void All dogs need a leash and at least I'll forget it And she would never hurt me though she's never said it But I'm not gonna ask her today I don't wanna scare her away Your town, I'm all alone and I just can't stare at the phone I wanna talk about lifelong mistakes and you can tell your stepfather I said so"

I how his "addiction to alcohol" has affected his life...but it seems to be veeery personal lyrics on this one

Great by james LaBrie to be able to sing lyrics that others had wrote like if they were his own...Just that's great to be a singer...and he sings really good oon this song and so do on the whole awake album...

I love the video to this song, it's so much attitude in it and in the solo to... (Isn't the video shot in Japan?)

I heard this song was written by Kevin Moore and KM said it was about something else, but it was really about how he hated his bandmates, and that's why he left right after this album.

Yeah Kevin Moore wrote that. That sounds interesting if it's true

Kevin Moore did write Lie. It could be about feeling betrayed and lied to in a relationship, or by the band. We'll never really know, but I'd put my money on this being his feeling towards the band.

Kevin Moore wrote a good amount of the lyrics and music on awake, and a lot of them seem to be about him leaving the band and having totally different musical ideas than the rest of them. He gave them the lyrics, they recorded it, then he left the band around tour time if im not mistaken. So they knew he would eventually leave the band (just read the lyrics to 6:00) but he wanted to make sure he had his final DT works down on this album before. He didnt really hate his bandmates, he just disagreed with them all the time.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
