[Verse 1]
Time can take its toll on the best of us
Look at you, you're growing old so young
Traffic lights blink at you in the evening
Tilt your head and turn it to the sun
Sometimes the T.V. is like a lover
Singing softly as you fall asleep
You wake up in the morning and it's still there
Adding up the things you'll never be

[Chorus]
Alright, I can say what you want me to
Alright, I can do all the things you do
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

[Verse 2]
Time can take its toll on the best of us
Look at you, you're growing old so young
Traffic lights blink at you in the evening
You tilt your head and turn it to the setting sun
You disembark the latest flight from paradise
You almost turn your ankle on the snow
You fall back into where you started
Make up words to songs you used to know
So
[Chorus]
Alright, I can say what you want me to
Alright, I can do all the things you do
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

[Verse 3]
The hard luck God
You never had a chance, you know
Incurable romantics never do
He held the flame I wasn't born to carry
I'll leave the dying young stuff up to you
You get back on the latest flight to paradise
I found out from a note taped to the door
I think I saw your airplane in the sky tonight
Through my window, lying on the kitchen floor

[Chorus]
Alright, I can say what you want me to
Alright, I can do all the things you do
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

[Chorus]
Alright, I can say what you want me to
Alright, I can do all the things you do
Alright, I'll make it all up for you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you

To me, I feel as though in the beginning of the song, the guy and the girl have a relationship that is fading. They are still together, but the girl is sort of drifting away from him and is exploring her other possibilities in the world, whereas the guy, has let this relationship become the biggest/only part of his life, and it has really taken control of him. The girl wants more though, more than the deep love that they did have before. Even though she still has feelings for him, she realizes now she can't stay with him, she wants more in life. She wants to leave, but doesn't know how to do it or what to say, because she has fallen in love with him before and she doesn't know where her love for him has gone. But she knows it's gone.

So, on her return, from a trip I suppose, she kind of just falls back into the relationsip, because it what she is used to. It may not be the same, but it's effortless for her to keep going with the guy, even though she no longer loves him the way that she used to. She makes up words to songs, or the love, she used to know. She knows that she'll hurt the guy when she leaves, so it's hard for her, and it's just making things worse in the relationship. That's why there's the slightest change in the second verse to "setting sun," because she see's their relationship as fading away.

So one day she decides that she can no longer take it and just sort of departs in a way that she believes will hurt her lost lover the least, by just taking the flight away and leaving him a note. He finds it and reads it and is just broken hearted.

The whole point of the song is sort of how a lover can still love and care for the person they leave, when they know they must go, when they know that they want more than the relationship they have, even though it may be good. Or I guess that's the way I see it based on my past relationships.

I welcome input as this song is really moving.

I think it's about a girl who is chasing success and whose life has become more important than her feelings for the boy. The boy watches from the background as she passively lives her life, fading in and out of awareness as the days pass her by, busy trying to live a life she thinks will make her happy, even though she's lonely as hell.

She feels her old life slipping away along with her relationship with the boy. However there is so much trouble between with them that there's no easy fix. She offers to "fix everything" and say everything is fine, telling him she's still in love with him, as he hears her say this helplessly with a sarcastic tone.

In the last line however she realizes she is still in love with him, but it's too late to mend the relationship, as the music fades out.

Arrgh... anything by Stars is so darned romantic! My favourite line of this song: "You get back on the latest flight to paradise / I found out from a note taped to the door / I think I saw your airplane in the sky tonight / Through my window lying on the kitchen floor." You can listen to an in-studio performance of this song (and others) at .

i was completely blown away the first time i listened to this song, the falling piano/keyboard notes, the lyrics, the chorus... everything. i can't even really explain it but this song touches me. i agree with rivers, it's easy to put on repeat without ever growing bored of the song.

besides the chorus, my favorite part of the lyrics:

"you disembark the latest flight from paradise you almost turn your ankle in the snow,"

the "snow" being stress that you get slapped in the face with("almost turn your ankle") upon your return back to normalcy from a time of bliss. i know that feeling well.., it's all about the person having so much fun, say, visiting a friend; a week of complete happiness, bliss even, but then having to say goodbye to the friend and coming back home... immediately being greeted by all of the garbage, worries, and stress that the person left behind at home.

"you fall back into where you started make up words to songs you used to know,"

going back into the routine of life again after such a wonderful week is horrible, and you find yourself forgetting a lot of things and making it up as you go along, in an attempt to cope with the feeling of, well, loss.

those lines say so much with so little. =P

as for the general meaning of the song? to me it's about spending time with a person, time passes, and you play it off to them like it's all fine with you, you don't mind at all that they left, or whether or not they ever come around... but in reality they're still in love with the person, and they want more than what they're getting from the current situation.

the last bit of the chorus in the song gets me every time... i admit to being moved to tears a few times. =P it's a powerful song, and those lyrics ("I want more / give me more...") are so heart-felt and real. sometimes i wish i had the guts to say that to certain people.
Edited by delial on May 28 2008, at 03:11AM

I think this is my favourite song ever... I first heard this on a mixed CD from American Eagle Outfitters. Everytime I make a mixed CD it is one of the first added. However, I don't understand half of what it means... I just know I fell in love with it the first time I heard it a few years back. My favourite part is "You get back on the latest flight to paradise I found out from a note taped to the door I think I saw your airplane in the sky tonight Through my window lying on the kitchen floor" This is the one song my sisters and I never switch off and can agree to listen to. I wish I could find an album in a store. Im gunshy of buying off the internet.

Incredible song. Its so moving. Those Stars, they get me every time! Haa. The way Amy Millan sings that chorus is just unbelievable! Her voice even seems a little raspy. I love it.

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
