@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

I hate everything.... Fall Out Boy.... the epitome of conformity and trendy for our generation... singing a cover of this awesome song? Its just wrong... so ironic that its actually killing me inside....

Okay, I know this is coming in way late, but I had to put in my two cents. This song IS NOT about finding yourself or being true to yourself or anything like that, except maybe in a very distant way. People want to think that because they think it's cool or whatever, but obviously they're being very selective when they read or listen to the lyrics. The song IS about suicide- or, rather, not committing suicide. He's saying if you learn to love being alive then you might eventually just learn to enjoy your life. Passing open windows refers to NOT jumping out of them. The leap of faith bit is another allusion to this. Instead of your "leap" being from an open window, it can be an effort at finding happiness. The bridge- "you have to learn... be sure you wake"- is telling people not to get hung up on failure. Don't let it drive you to want to kill yourself, just realize that everyone makes mistakes and it's not the end of the world. The reast really speaks for itself. Eve 6 did a great little tribute to this song in their song "Friend of MIne," which is also about suicide. Of course, Max Collins was obsessed with the Dear You album. Anyway, that's all I have to say.

at first i was listening to it and thought it was about not polluting and keeping the earth clean and blah blah blah.
but the more i listened to it i realized it was more about staying true to yourself and not letting yourself become the cliche of your generation.
and then i started thinking, maybe it's about suicide. "survival never goes out of style" "your leap of faith could be a well timed smile" as in you just have to be a little nicer to eachother.

I think this song is about growing up and being young. Its about fiding yourself and what you want, and not worrying about making mistakes cause thats what happens. It's also too about finishing, and not giving up.
so i was looking for some jawbreaker stuff on ares.. and all i found was a shitty cover of this by.. fall out boy. sigh
It has always struck me as a song by someone older to a kid who is sad. It seems to all be about not getting depressed and not giving up and the fact that just by doing this you can save a whole generation.
